But you Just said that " a player testing positive at the combine is like them telling teams they are a drug addict" so whether Houston had a good rookie year and rookie contract or not why would a team invest all that money into a "drug addict" as you said? The answer is that good pass rushers are l a premium in this league and owners are willing to give them more wiggle room. And like I said if Gregory lights it up the rest of his rookie contract I guarantee you he will see plenty of guaranteed money on quite a nice contract.a
I already documented why Houston got paid he didn't follow up his positive drug test at the combine with another positive drug test immediately after his rookie year. A player has to have a serious drug addiction to have that happen. It's especially troubling to see it happen to a high profile player like Gregory who was seen as a top 15 talent. Despite all the scrutiny he's under he tests positive again.
One positive drug test even at the combine could be looked at as a mistake due to recreational use but to test positive again less than a year later after a players rookie season is confirmation that player has a serious addiction. Owners aren't going to give any wiggle room in regards to a lot of guaranteed money to a player who clearly has a drug addition and is 2 strikes away from a year long suspension. Houston was a 3rd round pick who came in and got 5.5 sacks his rookie season in 10 starts.
He showed over 4 seasons that his positive drug test at the combine was a mistake not a problem. Gregory proved his positive drug test at the combine wasn't a mistake it's a problem. Garrett admitted Gregory has a long way to go. It's bad enough to test positive for drugs twice within a year but it's even worse when that player had a disappointing rookie season and follows it up with a positive drug test.
I'm not saying Gregory won't receive any guaranteed money if he can produce and stay clean through the duration of his rookie contract but no team will trust him with "a lot" of guaranteed money. He's dug himself a hole with the 2 positive drug tests and a bad rookie season. He simply can't be trusted with a lot of fully guaranteed money. When a player makes a "mistake" they have to immediately rectify it and prove it was a "mistake" that won't happen again.
