Blue chip talent is that...... "talent".

What are you talking about? Injuries doesn't make you not a blue chip anymore. Blue chip refers to top notch talent dude

Blue chip is elite talent. Randy Gregory & Jaylon Smith have the talent to be perrenial all-pro/pro-bowl players.

You have no clue what you're talking about. You claimed both Randy Gregory and Jaylon Smith fell out of the first round due to their talent and you couldn't be more wrong! Failed drug tests and serious injuries have absolutely nothing to do with a players talent and the term "blue chip" when it comes to sports is all about a players talent level.

You are all incorrect.

KJJ: Show me where I 'claimed both Randy Gregory and Jaylon Smith fell out of the first round due to their talent...' Afterwards, I'll show you bigfoot riding on a unicorn.

I would not be shocked if Gregory never played another down for the Cowboys. Anyone that counts on Gregory is making a huge mistake. He has major issues and smoking pot is just a remedy for that.

Anything we get out of Gregory will be on borrowed time in my opinion. And I dont think he will dominate even if he does get on the field.

I have no problems saying that I dont believe he will get another contract from the Cowboys. In my opinion he is another complete bust of a 2nd round pick by Jerry.

Jerry blew it again, there is no other way to put it. He got desperate, and reached for a guy that many had off the board. Good teams simply dont make these kind of draft picks.

And I will be the first to say that I absolutely loved the pick last year. But in all honesty, I never thought it was possible for a guy to NOT be able to quit smoking pot. I still cant believe it. But obviously this kid has bigger mental issues than I was privy to. If you cant stop smoking dope for the draft and then for the team that took you, you are completely done. And I dont think the Cowboys are counting on him either.

This thread is pretty ridiculous in my opinion.

You're entitled to your opinions but just so you know the 3 top ranking officials in this organization as in Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones and Jason Garrett have all said Gregory is improving and that they expect him to be playing in the future at a high level for this team.

I'm incorrect that I said blue chip talent is just that. ....talent haha sure thing.

You also said they feel out the first round because of injuries and drug issues which makes them not blue chip prospects. ...

Both Gregory and Jaylon are top 5 blue chip prospects, that has to due with talent on the field. Nothing about blue chip is about injuries or drug issues. Moss and Dez both fell due to off the field issues are they not blue chip prospects

Not buying that for one second. Although Houston tested positive at the combine he didn't follow it up with another positive test after his rookie season. Houston had a promising rookie season with 5.5 sacks and his sack totals kept climbing each year. He's had no missed steps with drugs since turning pro in 2011 which gained him trust. Gregory is a different story his latest positive test has everyone rolling their eyes with it coming right after his rookie season. He didn't waste any time proving the naysayers right. He obviously has a serious pot addiction and it's going to cost him his career if he can't give up the drug. What made Gregory's failed combine drug test more troubling than Houston's failed test is Houston wasn't as highly touted as Gregory who many had as a top 15 pick. With a magnifying glass on the top talent it made Gregory's failed drug test even more troubling to NFL teams.

Jerry Jones isn't going to fork over a lot of guaranteed money to Gregory and I doubt Gregory will come close to the production that Justin Houston has produced the past 4 years to tempt anyone into risking that kind of guaranteed money on him. Gregory is already way behind with his rookie season in the toilet and with 4 games thrown away in 2016. Houston produced 15.5 sacks his first 2 seasons and he took off from there. Gregory had an opportunity to prove he had changed his ways after the Cowboys gave him a chance. He said all the right things on draft day and now look at him. He's made the organization and himself look bad and it will continue to cost him financially. If the Cowboys player program can't straighten him out no other teams are going to waste their time with him.

But you Just said that " a player testing positive at the combine is like them telling teams they are a drug addict" so whether Houston had a good rookie year and rookie contract or not why would a team invest all that money into a "drug addict" as you said? The answer is that good pass rushers are l a premium in this league and owners are willing to give them more wiggle room. And like I said if Gregory lights it up the rest of his rookie contract I guarantee you he will see plenty of guaranteed money on quite a nice contract.a

I know we don't trust the guy right now and rightfully so. But I came across this phenomenal video regarding Randy's game and it makes sense why we drafted him.

Man, if we can just keep him focused and get him on the field.

We have more blue chip talent on defense than we think.

some players are not worth your fandome. Gregory is one of them.

You are right in regards to players that can break a fan bases heart and Randy Gregory is at this point more in that category than not.

However, he is a Cowboy and there is talent there so I am rooting for him.

I already documented why Houston got paid he didn't follow up his positive drug test at the combine with another positive drug test immediately after his rookie year. A player has to have a serious drug addiction to have that happen. It's especially troubling to see it happen to a high profile player like Gregory who was seen as a top 15 talent. Despite all the scrutiny he's under he tests positive again. One positive drug test even at the combine could be looked at as a mistake due to recreational use but to test positive again less than a year later after a players rookie season is confirmation that player has a serious addiction. Owners aren't going to give any wiggle room in regards to a lot of guaranteed money to a player who clearly has a drug addition and is 2 strikes away from a year long suspension. Houston was a 3rd round pick who came in and got 5.5 sacks his rookie season in 10 starts.

He showed over 4 seasons that his positive drug test at the combine was a mistake not a problem. Gregory proved his positive drug test at the combine wasn't a mistake it's a problem. Garrett admitted Gregory has a long way to go. It's bad enough to test positive for drugs twice within a year but it's even worse when that player had a disappointing rookie season and follows it up with a positive drug test.

I'm not saying Gregory won't receive any guaranteed money if he can produce and stay clean through the duration of his rookie contract but no team will trust him with "a lot" of guaranteed money. He's dug himself a hole with the 2 positive drug tests and a bad rookie season. He simply can't be trusted with a lot of fully guaranteed money. When a player makes a "mistake" they have to immediately rectify it and prove it was a "mistake" that won't happen again.

The only one who's incorrect is you. Have fun trying to spin and twist your way out of your comment below. You said Gregory and Smith both fell out the first round due to their "talent." Everyone but YOU knows the reason they fell out of the first round and it had nothing to do with anyone questioning their talent.

Isn't the term 'blue chip' for, like, can't-miss exceptional prospects? I hardly think Gregory is a can't-miss kinda player. Or Jaylon Smith for that matter. There's a reason both fell out of the 1st.., because they AREN'T 'blue chipper' guarantees. We're seeing now why.

This is a normal comment from a non-professional. The incidence of mental illness including personality disorders is higher than most think.

this non-professional says, if the team knew it before the draft, they were fools to spend a second round pick on him.

this non-professional also says you are making a lot of assumptions about what may or may not ail randy gregory -- without cause.

You're welcome to your opinion but there are reasons why professionals treat mental illness and not lay people. I've said more than enough so I'll leave it at that.

I think the guy's got a legitimate medical condition. I'm rooting for him, too. The problem I have, though, is I'm not sure I want to extend him even if he develops. That's another big risk on the guy at that point.

randy gregory couldn't start at DE for *this* team.

i don't dislike the guy, but he has done almost nothing for this team.

any projection of his performance right now is pie in the sky.

all drafting is projection

My understanding is that he suffers from depression and anxiety and at times uses marijuana to cope. That's why when he feels pressure, like the draft, he doesn't consider the consequences of partaking with the drug.

That's where the question lies, can he mentally handle the rigors of the NFL?

So I understand where you still may not want to extend him, even if he develops into the type of player his skills would suggest he has the potential to become.

He can learn the coping skills if he wishes. He can take meds if necessary. He can get CBT, assertiveness training, and psychotherapy. I seriously doubt he can't be helped.

dude, i'm sure you're great at your job -- and i'm even more sure that i'm not great at your job -- but you are so high on your soap box that you can't see the point here. this is not about getting proper care to people who need it.

the cowboys had no obligation to draft randy gregory, and they have no obligation to continue to employ him now. so, if -- if! -- he has the issues that you imply that he has, and if they knew about those issues before drafting him, then they took on unnecessary risks. and, so far, those risks have not been outweighed by the rewards.

that is all.

ever walk outa step from everybody else?

are you serious right now? you have no idea who i am. but even in the minute context of this board, i have no problem disagreeing with a commonly held opinion.

please stick to making a point about a topic, not attacking people who disagree with you.

randy Gregory for whatever reason has fulfilled the reason so many teams took him off of there boards the cowboys were the only team that was going to take him that high because the owner and the gm are the same person was a bad pick then and is still a bad pick.
