Rank the Cowboys WR Corp Against Playoff Teams

Yea, I think we see it fairly close.

You see it as a concern for the playoffs?

Not really, we have enough other weapons to off-set it. I feel like our best is unstoppable but we are throwing a lot of interceptions and giving up a lot of penalties and that little bit of inconsistency is what I worry will burn us. Especially against a run team that controls the clock.

Fair enough. We just haven’t really seen the run game clamped down yet…

When we do, I fear the opposing teams are going to make MG and Noah beat us. I worry about a lack of separation and Dak having to force throws which obviously could lead to turnovers.

We need to rank the QBs decision making among the teams
It's a valid point, but it would be hard to do.
Having said that, I'd agree that this is an area where Dak MUST improve the most.
Being more accurate on longer passes wouldn't hurt either.

I’m not to worried about Gallup and I‘m banking on Ferguson and Hendershot as much as Noah Brown. That 12 personnel in conjunction with Pollard I feel is very hard to stop.

At the same time I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said.

Yea, I think Gallup is the main reason I’m worried. He just doesn’t seem the same. Maybe he gains a little more of that burst and athleticism back down the stretch?

When you look at the last few SB winners there were 2 high end options if the opposing team wanted to erase option 1.

Rams - Kupp or OBJ
Chiefs - Hill or Kelce
Bucs - Evans, Godwin and Gronk

As long as the receivers are not dropping balls, I have them right there against any other receivers group out there.
  • I like a focused Lamb 1-on-1 against pretty much anyone.
  • I like a healthy Gallup 1-on-1 against pretty much anyone.
  • I like Noah Brown as a guy who is more than capable as a #3.
  • And while no one in our group of TEs are a Kelcey, all 3 are capable in the passing game.

So it comes down to:
  • Can James Washington do anything coming off the IR? Even if he can't, I'm not worried.
  • Does KM continue to keep Pollard involved in the passing game because he can cause many matchup problems?
  • Can our offense find a way to utilize Turpin's speed on offense since he has been a disappointment so far on ST, IMO?

JMHO

That’s Ceedee and Shultz for us but we have a better o-line and run game than those teams. We are just built different than recent winners. And we should be, Dak plays different to Brady, Mahomes and Stafford.

Gallup seems to be getting better, the last two games have certainly been encouraging but he’s probably not quite back to where he has been and where we want him for the playoffs, we’ll see I guess.

For me though, our ability to conjure mismatches that aren’t seemingly getting figured out is encouraging plus the trajectory of the team overall is encouraging.

Offense:
  • Gallup is getting better
  • Ceedee is lifting into a true no.1
  • Tyron is back in training
  • The o-line looks as good as ever overall
  • The rookie TE’s started well and have only got better
  • Pollard has become the lead back
  • Zeke is healthier than he’s ever been this time of year
  • Noah Brown has been increasingly more reliable
  • Turpin adds a wrinkle I feel is under utilized
  • Shultz is back after early injury
Defense:
  • Hankins has clogged the middle
  • Williams improves every game
  • Clarke, same as Williams, better every week
  • Kearse looks back to health
  • Bland just balled out
Really the one negative is the CB injuries but when you’ve got arguably the no.1 offense and no.1 defense things are promising.

We've got the best combination of skill players of everyone.

Give me someonw better.

I haven't looked at other teams rosters in detail recently but I tend to agree that if you take WR, TE & RB I'd be hard pressed to name a group that from top to bottom is clearly better.

Even a team like the Dolphins whose top 2 WR's are excellent & the top TE is very good have more falloff I believe.

Agreed, but we would need that done by an expert who has the film study. Most of us don’t understand what the play concept was, nor do we get to see the whole field version of tape that shows where defenders are coming from, etc.

Play concept is the same from last week

Looking across the 8 NFL playoff teams across the NFC / AFC how would you rank the Cowboys WR corp? I'd put them at 10 of 14 (ahead of the Giants, Titans, Jets and Ravens).

This is one of my biggest concerns heading into the playoffs considering opposing teams might sell out against the run and double Lamb.

Where do you have them? Any concerns?
WR corp? I think we are right in the middle.
Teams I see higher than us: Mia, Buff, Cincy, Minn, TB, Sea
Teams I see us better than: Jets, Bal, Tenn, KC, NYG, SF
Eagles about a push

Who is the other team in the playoffs right now? Chargers?

Yea, hopefully the run game can continue to be a big factor and my concern won’t come to life.

I just haven’t really seen the progression of MG like you have. 2 of his TDs have been on scramble drills (not really winning a route) and a jump ball which he’s always been good at. Schultz is good but he’s more of a zone threat than someone I’m going to lean in to win a 1:1.

Phi and SF? Woah.

Correct. My problem is MG doesn’t look like the player he used to be. Every 1:1 he gets he’s having trouble creating any separation.

I don’t have a lot of confident in him, or any other WR not named Lamb, being able to consistently get open on 3rd and 5 of Lamb is doubled and we really need it.

You're overstating the issue with Gallup.

Cowboys have been running a lot of 2 and 3 TE sets and using the pass to Schults, Fergason and Hendershot more so than running 3 WR sets. As for the WR Lamb is having a good season and Gallup is slowly making progress.
The main reason we are running the ball better. Having just Ceedee and Gallup instead of Ceedee, Gallup and Amari has taken the focus off the passing game and to the running game.

I'd say that's a pretty accurate assessment. Not sure where WR play ranks in terms of relevance to playoff success though. QB, line play, and turnovers seems to be the most important factors in playoff success.

Last season’s conference championships featured Chase, Deebo, Kupp, OBJ, Higgins, Tyreek and Kelce.
Based on that I’m going to say WR play may be one of the most important indicators of a team’s success.

Would not disagree with that. I went to the Giants game and Dallas ran majority 2 and 3 TE sets, they still threw the ball out of that formation
