RB debate continues, R Rice vs. Felix Jones

barber can do everything rice can do but better. he also is faster than rice. drafting rice would be a mistake which is why we won't draft him.

I guess its a good thing that i dont buy most of the stuff you say. Barber is a 4.5 guy and well see how Rice does. At the end of the day though your oversimplification posits NADA.

we won't draft rice, fuzzy lumps. BOOK IT!

i'm not high on Felix jones like a lot of people on this board are. when i saw him play i mostly just saw speed and thats it. seems like nothing more than a Tyson Thompson to me at the pro level

I think Rice is going to be a super back in the NFL. I know he may need 15+ carries and that he's more like Barber than Felix Jones is... but I really think that guy is going to be a very, very good back.

I would be A. OK with us drafting that guy. He's going to move the chains a lot in the NFL.

$0.02

Agree 100%.

Heck the guy might turn out better than Barber, why draft anyone thinking they will automatically be worse or get less carries than a 4th round pick?

Only reason I might lean slightly towards Felix is his kick return skills, which we could sorely use, but I have zero problem if Rice comes in and becomes the back we thought Julius would be.

Its foolish to draft with the idea the whomever we get will be a distant 2nd to Barber. That's the 'draft backups' mentality that killed Jerry a decade ago.

Jerry tried drafting backups in the 90s, didn't work out so well did it? They should always draft the best guys available. Trying to draft guys to fit a role can get you in trouble.

Funny you should ask . . . .

Julius Jones RB Notre Dame

Strengths
Julius is a lot stronger runner then he looks. He catches the ball well and has good special teams potential. He has decent hands and quick feet. He has good mental strength and can take a hit. Julius runs well between the tackles and has enough speed to turn the corner.

Needs to Improve
His work ethic has improved and his priorities on and off the field seem to be in order. He must work on his running back skills: his vision, lateral movement in the hole, setting up his blocks, catching the ball and blocking. That's about it. Not much, right? Julius has a lot of work to do.

Bottom Line
Julius is still developing, but every time I see him, he gets better and better. He reminds me a little bit of Brian Westbrook of the Eagles. You can see the talent and the lack of development. If you pick him, cross your fingers and hope he will have the work ethic to continue to get better. He could become an important part of your offense, but for me, I think that he is a 2nd day pick because of the work ethic question. To me, academically ineligible means a lot when you are getting something for free (scholarship) and you don't bother to appreciate it.

Drew Boylhart

I don't necessarily agree with him on this review after watching Julius in the NFL. I don't see any resemblance to Brian Westbrook (Julius can catch the ball??) and we all know that he never progressed after the second/third year to become a more complete back.

Thanks by the way. Do you have a write-up on M. Turner from San Diego?

That sir is about as excellent a point as possible.

4 picks in two years for a returner and we end up with Crayton doing it is all the evidence i need.

i actually hope that Newman is healthy enough to return punts this year.

Ray Rice will be a real good back on Sundays, .. whether for us or whoever.

I watched the YouTube videos of him and they are fun to watch, but those were his big plays.

The thing that has always impressed me when watching Rice was the 4-8 yds runs when nothing was there.

The 4 yd run on 3rd and 2 to move the chains.

The tough runs on short yardage or goal line. Look out if he sniffs the goalline.

Those are the runs I need to see to know if a back will be a good back in the NFL.

WV has geared up to stop Rice and he would still get 130 yds.

If we get RR I will be a very happy fan, as will you.

This is a very, very important point, IMO.

I'm not sure why JJ drafted for back-ups in the '90s, especially in one draft, if I remember correctly.

But I think that drafting for back-ups gets you into a heap of trouble.

I know we're a talented team, but I'd always want my draft picks to push my starters for playing time as well as for the starting position.

I would be happy with either of those two backs......both are winners and a need position for us.

Here is a write-up of a RB that may drop in the Draft, simply because this is a deep draft for RBs.

Maybe we look at this guy later on in Day 2 . . . .

Thomas Brown RB Georgia

STRENGTHS
Thomas is a fast, shifty, quick RB with good balance and strength. He is a strong blocker and plays bigger than his size because of his bulk and intelligence. Thomas reminds me a lot of Darren Sproles (RB San Diego Chargers). He has the strength and power to get the tough yards between the tackles as well as the speed to turn the corner. Thomas runs with excellent vision in the hole and if you don’t tackle him at the line of scrimmage, you run the risk of looking at his numbers all the way down the field as he scores a TD. He is a very underrated back who has good hands out of the backfield as well as down the field. Thomas will be able to help your offense at multiple positions with not a lot of touches and will impact for the team that drafts him right away.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE
Thomas will always have the injury issue question hung on him because of his size. All he has to do is stay injury free and he will shut those critics up real fast.

TALENT BOARD ROUND 2
Thomas is an impact player because of his unique size, speed, strength and athletic talents. He is a match-up nightmare, which is what makes him so valuable to the team that drafts him. He is too fast for the LB’s and Safeties and too strong for the CB’s. He is so quick between the tackles that DT’s will not be able to shed quickly enough to make a tackle. He is a little bit stronger when he runs the ball than Darren Sproles, but he’s not as strong as Maurice Jones Drew (RB Jacksonville Jaguars). Thomas will help a team the day after they draft him because of his multiple talents and his ability to play more than one position, which is all you can ask for when you draft a player. In this draft, with so many RB’s, it is very hard to say in what round Thomas will be drafted. I can tell you this, the team that drafts him will be very happy they did and the fans will be happier.

i will not be one of the people who is pissed off if we get Rice. Truth be told, though, there are probably 8 backs this year that I wouldn't be upset with if we got them.

Felix just happens to be one of my favorites is all.

I agree. This looks to be a very good year for RB and while I have my own favorites (F. Jones and Stewart) I would not be upset with selecting one of the other RB's in this draft.
