You can win Defensive Rookie of the year your second year in the league?
If you took the time to read all the comments you would have seen that i retracted that after i found out that your rookie year counts regardless if you play or not. :lmao2: I even apologized

but what if Jack plays at a pro-bowl level for 3/4 years and Smith either never recovers or recovers but really isn't the same player? Or both Jack and Smith turn out to be terrific but Jack has an extra season (rookie year) of production before both of their rookie contracts expire?
I'm surprised that we skipped on Jack when we picked up Leary with a similar condition and he's been great for us.
Certainly anything can happen (Jax and Fowler last year) and I realize we went off of our doctors' guestimations, but I just thought we should've bet on Jack over Smith at that point in the draft. Not sure but Smith might've even been available at our third pick.

These what-ifs are one reason I don't judge a pick this early. We've seen players who were expected to be terrific never play a down because of injuries or play poorly because of them. We've seen players who were expected to be all-world crash and burn. We've seen players who were after-thoughts go on to have great careers. You just never know.

I can agree that we took a risk with the Smith pick, but I can't pan it because I don't know how he'll turn out. (So I can clearly not choose the cup in front of me.)

I also can't laud the pick because other players we could have taken get injured. (So I can clearly not choose the cup in front of you.)

Like the wise Vizzini once said (paraphrased): Let's just drink from our own cups and see which one of us dies, but always remember to never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.

yet the Jaylon Smith pick is still hated. When he wins Defensive rookie of the year next year, im going to remember all of those comments.

Aaaaand, if he never plays a down or is just a shell of his former self, I'm guessing we can expect you to be on the board apologizing to everyone, right?

I liked Jaylon Smith as much as the next guy but I always felt Jack was the better player. He was more explosive and instinctive in my opinion. I can't say I'm disappointed getting Jaylon but I guess we have no choice but to hope Jaylon Comes back guns blazing.

I think all things being equal (in terms of health), Jaylon Smith (IMO) was the better prospect as a linebacker. Myles, in college, was a victim of his own versatility; there's a lot of unknown to his game as linebacker. That said, Myles has all the physical tools to be outstanding.

I have to side with Jaylon on this one, he won the Butkis award going up against Jack. I think that pretty much says it all. That isnt an easy award to get.

You have to be joking with this comment. Nobody goes into the draft knowing that a player will get hurt in training camp. That is just ridiculous. Its another thing completely to draft a guy you 100% know will not play his rookie year, if ever. Personally, I dont mind the pick. Long term, it was probably a decent move. But it flies in the face of the "win now what is best for this year" mantra of Jones and the FO as was with the Zeke pick. It shows complete lack of continuity, strategy, and planning on the part of the FO.

And how is Jaylon going to win rookie of the year if he isnt even playing his rookie year?

I already apologized for thinking it was the same as baseball, hockey, and basketball.

Leary has been a good player for us who we invested next to nothing into. Jack would still have required a major investment. With the pick of Smith one can wonder which investment is riskier but you really can't comp to Leary who is a UDFA with Jack who had to be taken at 34. Its like you buy a scratch off lottery ticket and get a 10k pay off for Leary where as you're investing a lot more for Jack.

And why would that be?

Because I think rookie of the year awards should be for rookies?

Or your idea?

Well seeing as how out of the 4 major U.S. sports football is the only one that doesn't share my opinion, it doesn't seem too illogical. Again something is wrong with you.

Yah..........um we are talking about football, not the other 3 major sports. So maybe you mean something is wrong with the other 3 major sports. How does any of that affect me?

Bills already lost Shaq Lawson to shoulder surgery. Now Reggie Ragland, who many fans wanted, blows his knee out.

And?? Those players picked at the time were ready to go. No one can predict future injuries like these.

Does not make our pick of a player with nerve damage who could possible never play a down in this league a good pick seeing how desperate we were for defensive players who could play right away. Especially at a premium pick.

This is dumb logic.

It'll still have been an unnecessary risk.

If another player who was on the board when we took Smith contends for the award *this* year, will you bump the thread too?
yep.

how things play out is not really relevant except in a make believe world. unless there was an underlying medical condition that came out after they were picked - injuries are part of the game and simply because someone was hurt on another team doesn't mean they would have been hurt here in dallas or otherwise.

it's just the "Rue the Day" crowd having to get shots in to the bitter end regardless of logic.
