LB Smith could turn out to be the steal of the draft and the JJ Haters will never give him an ounce of credit, even in hindsight. The haters would then complain that a 'real GM' would have drafted Smith in the 3rd or 4th round. Or, if Smith turns out great, the JJ Haters will just call it a Garrett pick.

No matter what happens, Smith will be either a great Garrett pick or a Jerry mistake.

Wow, so their first-round pick just had shoulder surgery and is out half the season, and now their second-round pick is out for the year.

Remember Dante Fowler? Vic Beasley?

Jaylon Smith sounds like a better pick all the time.

I really don't see the connection between Ragland and Smith.

My understanding is nobody knows whether Smith will ever recovery to the point he can ever play a down in the NFL.

It'd hard to compare Smith to anybody until he reaches that critical milestone.

The point is, players are lost for the season fairly commonly anyway. Dallas got two top-five talents in the first two rounds.

The Cowboys doctors aren't that worried about the nerve re-firing. They just don't know when.

yet the Jaylon Smith pick is still hated. When he wins Defensive rookie of the year next year, im going to remember all of those comments.

would he technically be eligibile? I know the NBA works that way, but has there ever been a guy who technically wasn't a rookie win the award or even get votes?

No, he isn't.
You can't make such a statement at this point in time. Ragland won't play this season and neither will Smith.
So, right now, neither looks like the right pick.

Simmer down girl, I can give my opinion without you picking it apart like the word police. Actually, IT IS better at this point and time because Smith is would be closer to touching the field than Rag. You have no idea what you are talking about anyways, because there is a chance Smith could touch the field if we make the playoffs, however highly unlikely. Lastly, it's subjective...why are you even on this blog?

That's a pretty glib take on what the doctor has said. He's confident about the timeline of a potential nerve recovery, but he's made no assurance that 1) it's actually going to happen and 2) that the nerve is going to fire and if it does that it'll be at 100% functionality (which is the other part that folks are looking past; the nerve may not reinnervate at 100% and the net affect would be only a partially functioning foot.)

in all fairness - you can gamble 10x and if one works out - such as we hope this one will - how do you make up for your screw ups in someone like gregory?

there's a reason jones catches so much flack.

Leary has been a good player for us who we invested next to nothing into. Jack would still have required a major investment. With the pick of Smith one can wonder which investment is riskier but you really can't comp to Leary who is a UDFA with Jack who had to be taken at 34. Its like you buy a scratch off lottery ticket and get a 10k pay off for Leary where as you're investing a lot more for Jack.

yes i can compare it to Leary since also had a degenerative knee condition and was likely a second or third round pick otherwise. Jack is similar to that except he was a top 10 player until the knee issue. Considering we had first-hand success with Leary and his condition got a number of good years out of him, I would've thought we'd be more likely to take Jack with his condition.

There are a number of ways this whole thing could turn out, for both Jack and Smith, and odds are that some folks will have been right and some wrong. I seriously hope I'm wrong and Smith recovers fully and turns out to be an all-star while Jack doesn't. In that case, you can happily remind me of all my posts regarding our second pick. And if I'm right, I certainly don't plan to author any "I told you so" threads.
I just want the team to win. I like this forum because I can post my thoughts and the draft is one of my favorite events (until we make another Super Bowl). There are tons of instances where I would've gone a different direction than our front office did, sometimes they were right, sometimes I was. But, right or wrong, I take enjoyment in the discussion and debates.

had to go there didn't you? ha
Smith still has to fully recover and be better than Jack to be considered the "right pick".
He was already rated higher than Jack in the draft.

Unfortunate for Ragland. Hate injuries to players since their shelf life is so short generally...
