This is really a sad day, and a horrible lesson to learn. I really do hope that people who think they are cool or invincible really understand that safety equipment is designed to save your life, period... (yeah, I said period)

Seatbelts are designed to keep you in the car, vs flying out of the windshield. Life jackets are designed to, well you know what these things are designed to do. But a lot of times, especially when we're young, we want to be cool, or look cool. We want to look like we know what we're doing and we're above any accidents, but crap happens.

Rip, I hope millions of lives are saved because of this.

while everyone is talking about the mistake that the man made they are completely missing a truly noble act on his part.

he carried that woman over to the buoy to save her life at the expense of his own. there is no greater sacrifice that one can give. that is all i need to know of the mans character may he rest in peace.

Launch player ....and then scroll to Marquise Hill Pronounced Dead if it doesn't immediately pop up.

Ok...that might explain the boat thing. The boat saw the girl and picked her up first, then lost sight of Hill...so Hill was never in the boat...

Count your blessings...you never know!

This is tragic. Sure he needed a vest at the very least but have any guys his size try to get one? I have a friend who I jet ski with all the time, he's a big boy and wears a vest. I have to say though, he can hardly zip the thing and the straps don't make it closed.

I doubt the thing would even hold him up.

Trust me, this isn't ignored.

My brother's friend jumped in to "attempt" to save another friend in the Great Falls rapids nearby where I live, and both of them died. He didn't have to, because there was little chance he could do anything, but he was heroic enough to try to do something instead of sitting there watching him go under.

This story kind of hits home twice to me. Once because I actually wore a life vest and was saved by it. Secondly, through my brother, who attempted to do what Hill did, but the latter was at least able to save a life while sacrificing his own.

Anyone know what sorta player Hill was for the Pats? I really don't know. He seemed like he had some talent coming out of LSU.

It would.

A tube foam can keep people afloat. Remember, the water will keep you afloat, particularly if you know how to swim. The float just keeps you above water so you don't have to expend so much energy.

From reading, he was a backup player who'd only appeared in 13 out of a possible 33 games in 3 years.

His problem is that he was probably playing behind Ty Warren and Richard Seymour. Doesn't sound like a lot of chances to get on the field..at least in the regular defense.

Happened to me too. I was on a canoeing trip with three girls in the middle of a river at a camp the weekend before the draft in which the Cowboys took Kevin Smith.

Our boat began to leak and the girls panicked, trying to stand up in the boat. Of course, it capsized, and having taken canoeing safety, I told the girls to put their hands on the side of the boat. They panicked, tried to get on top of the boat and it rolled. So they went for the next "safest" thing - me. Two of them wrapped their arms around my neck. We all had life jackets on, but they didn't think their life jackets would keep them afloat. They started pushing me under and I had a mind to ditch my life jacket and swim to safety because they were about to drown me. Fortunately, the current pushed us close enough where I could reach out to nearby branches and pull us in. Of course, the branch snapped after I pulled us to standing water.

But the biggest problem after that was hypothermia, which I didn't know about at the time. I wrapped up in my blanket shivering uncontrollably as I tried to get my temperature back down. Surprisingly, no one at that camp knew anything about hypothermia and as I look back, I could have died had I not tried to get myself as warm as possible.

Now, I will not go canoeing without a life jacket and with anyone who doesn't know how to swim and who will panick if they fell out the boat, even with a life jacket on.

Body of Patriot Marquise Hill found in New Orleans lake
By John Tomase and Jessica Heslam

Monday, May 28, 2007 - Updated: 07:13 PM EST

NEW ORLEANS - Authorities have found the body of heroic New England Patriots [team stats] player Marquise Hill, who went missing last night after a jet skiing mishap on Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans.

Hill’s body was discovered around 2:15 p.m. today by searchers with the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Department about a quarter-mile from the accident, said Capt. Brian Clark. The family was to positively identify him.

“The family will have to make positive identification,” Clark told the Associated Press, “but the body we found was that of Mr. Marquise Hill.”

Before the discovery of the body, Hill’s anguished mother, Sherry Hill, told the Herald she was waiting for a “miracle.”

“I’m just waiting. I’m just waiting on a miracle with our name on it. He’s not supposed to be gone. It’s too soon. It’s too soon. I’m just sitting here missing him, waiting for him to come home, waiting for him to walk through that door. He can’t be gone.”

Hill had been the subject of a frantic U.S. Coast Guard search.

“Marquise and a classmate friend of his, a young lady, were out jet skiing on Lake Pontchartrain where there’s a bad underflow and strong currents. They hit a wake and were thrown off the jet ski,” his agent, Albert Elias, told the Herald.

Neither was wearing a life jacket, the Coast Guard said.

Elias said he spoke with Hill’s companion and she either couldn’t swim or had difficulty swimming.

“Marquise knew this and being a strong swimmer, he was instructing her as he drifted away in a different direction to stay calm and don’t fight the water. He found a buoy or piling behind her and told her to let the current take her to that. She listened to him and it pretty much saved her life,” Elias said. “She’s home this morning in bed.”

The last time the woman saw the 24-year-old defensive end, a native of New Orleans, he was “still floating down the lake,” his agent said.

“It’s just like him to put someone else’s life in front of his own. That’s the way he always was. That’s about all we know,” Elias said. “All we can do now is pray.”

Before the discovery, the Patriots offered their support.

“We are all shocked,” Patriots owner Robert Kraft said in a statement. “We can only hope and pray that the search and rescue is successful. Our thoughts and prayers are with Marquise and his family. We know that Marquise is a strong young man and will remain optimistic while continuing to pray for his rescue.”

The incident began before 9:30 last night, when a Good Samaritan boater heard screams and plucked the woman, who was clinging to pilings, from the salt water lake, said Coast Guard Lt. Jg. Anna Visneski. The woman told the boater that two people had been on board the jet ski, which was recovered last night. The boater couldn’t locate Hill and the Coast Guard began its search last night. [continue]

Visneski said the boaters spotted Hill, but by the time they got there, they couldn’t find him.

The Coast Guard used boats and a helicopter to search while Wildlife and Fisheries used a recovery line that dragged the bottom of the water.

Visneski said the conditions were calm.Lake Pontchartrain is the second largest saltwater lake in the United States. It covers 630 square miles with an average depth of 12 to 14 feet.

Last night, the search was hampered by darkness, rain and white capping.

Hill, a promising young player, is 6-foot-6 inches tall and weighs 300 pounds. He played college football at LSU and was drafted by the Patriots [team stats] in the second round in 2004. He graduated from De La Salle High School in New Orleans.

My kid has those pool noodles, the foam tubes. I'm only 165lbs and they wont hold me up. I agree some thing is better than nothing but people his size are hard pressed to find a vest that fits. My buddy can hardly move in his.

...very unclear. We don't know if the occupants of the boat argued with Hill not to go back into the water. Maybe they didn't have any type of devices to either provide floation or to tether him while he entered back into the water.

But what is clear is he found the lady after the boat picked him up and he dragged her to a buoy. That implies that the boat occupants took off after he jumped back into the water. If they were there I would have expected them to have assisted in the rescue of the woman and pulled Hill back in.

Even if they did a perimeter search for her along with Hill how far did Hill swim away from them before he found her? What has been reported points to the fact that the boat was no where in proximity to Hill and the woman to assist. Disturbing in my mind.

I agree. I would hate to learn that the boat left knowing a woman was in the water and now Hill.

The other thing is the life perservers may not have fit Hill, and he may not have wanted to wear one because life jackets will impend your ability to swim and search under water.

I'm about 160 and they hold me up.

Interesting. But on reflection, you may be right. The life preserver may not have fit him, and that may have been a reason why he didn't wear one.

Still, even if I'm that big, I still don't go out without one.

I'm sorry, but I just can't understand how a man who is a strong swimmer can let a woman who can't swim or had difficulty swimming ride on a jet ski in the middle of a lake.

I can't understand that folks. :(

Like my friend says," it may not fit but I have some thing to hold on to."
The other mistake he made was being on a jet ski at night period. Not a good decision.

Expect comments of sympathy from Marcus Spears. They were both teammates on the LSU defensive line.

I want to offer my condolences to Hill's family. I hated to hear of that, highly, unfortunate. Sad sad sad. I almost drowned when I was six. Good, bad, or indifferent, I think one has the right to not wear a vest, seatbelt, and or helmet. I do however believe they are good, but guys I can tell you from experience, no one in that situation wants to hear you tell them what they should have or could have done. Believe me, they know and don't need all the criticism. I just truly feel for Marquise!
