...again...if you are going to take issue with me, at least read my point carefully. There have ALWAYS been examples of brashness in sports. I'm talking about what CHARACTERIZES the world of sports as a whole. Can you honestly tell me, using just one example, that on field celebrations in the NFL, after sacks, after tackles, were the same in the 1960's as they are today?

I admitted times have change. And I even responded why. EXPOSURE.

I'm responding to your reference to Sherman being an embarrassment.

Brashness has always been in sports. John Francis "Phenomenal" Smith said he could beat a team all by himself. That was in 1885. And he was an awful baseball player.

Sherman is a very good player and has a big personality. Some may call it brash. Others call it confidence. But I doubt it's self promotion.

I think Sherman's is gamesmanship. I think it part of his getting into the opponents head.

I remember before Michael Irvin ever stepped foot on the NFL field he told everybody he "could catch a bee-bee in the dark". And something about he was going to make Troy Aikman a super star ... or something to that affect.

Fair enough. My point was back before times changed his behavior would have been an exception, not a norm. I think it is not so bizarre to people anymore. My opinion is that it isn't just about exposure, it is about a cultural acceptance of self-promoting behavior, in all realms including sports. I think most of reality TV is nauseating and as empty as can be, and yet people watch it in droves. That stuff is ALL ABOUT "look at me."

Regardless, I think he is a good player, but I also think he has the luxury of not being matched up 1-1 most of the time. I watched them last week, and they are passing guys off in coverage regularly. I would LOVE to see him 1-1 with Dez all game long. I suspect he would get his lunch handed to him... whatever happens, lets go beat the Seahawks!!!!

You raise good points and even beyond gamesmanship, it's that exactly - a game. He isn't running for office. There's almost nothing he could say in a football context that would offend me because the truth is that Sherman and Revis going at each other doesn't change how much I get paid or that I have to buy a bag of dog food on the way home.

Some people take this stuff entirely too seriously.

Tough to say he's extremely intelligent just because he played football at Stanford. He was a communications major, which is notoriously known as the jock major because of how easy it is to coast through.

Travis Frederick was an engineering Major at Wisconsin. That's extreme intelligence.

Been plenty of guys who came through football programs at well respected academics colleges, doesn't mean they're intelligent.

not saying he's an idiot, but shouldn't be throwing generalizations about his intelligence out there just because the name of the school he went to. Mistake a lot of people make.

Ain't that the truth. It's amazing. I know emotion doesn't travel well over the internet but sometimes the "taking it personal" shines through.

I shouldn't talk because sometimes I just want to have an intellectually honest debate and people think I'm being combative and antagonistic.

I'm just waiting for 4pm EST to get this party started.:starspin:

I can't stand Sherman, dude doesn't think before he talks a lot. It's amazing that you guys are all over him bc he said something good about one of our best players. Guarantee if he said what he said about other guys about Dez ya'll would hate him.

You kind of have to be an a-hole to play the position; it's one where confidence goes a long way. Most of the great DBs in history have had a certain swagger.

It's no coincidence that most of the Dallas media dislike Orlando Scandrick and calls him arrogant, and he just so happens to be our best DB by far.

So now you're marginalizing his intelligence. Must be a "generalization" because he played football at Stanford and majored in communications. Doesn't measure up to Travis. Lord help me Jesus. Getting close.

... and he's very intelligent ... and he did very well in school. Don't know his grades and his major but I'm sure it doesn't measure up to Travis.

Is Sherman smart? Absolutely.

Is he very good at his job? Yep.

Is he annoying as all hell? Oh yeah.

He's very antagonizing. That's his game, he'll pick a fight to draw attention to himself. To be honest, I'm shocked he hasn't gone after Dez yet. Will keep an eye on it.

He won't and Dez won't, both of these players only react to another player if they come at them first.

Dez is probably the most respected WR in the league, and I dont just mean by the praise he gets before games. Watch a Falcon or Bengal games, you rarely see Julio or Aj get blanketed to the same degree Dez gets, only healthy Calvin is close with the amount of detail opposing defenses give
Dez definitely is getting respect.

Just fyi...the coverage a healthy Calvin receives does not "approach" what Dez gets, it far exceeds it.

Julio has Roddy White on the other side, so that's another story.
Same would apply for Marshall and Jeffery.
And Denver has way too many weapons for teams to be able to get away with doubling D Thomas too often.
I see AJ green getting doubled an awful lot, but I think you're right that it may not be as often as Dez.
Jordy Nelson puts up about the same numbers and is the same size and speed as Dez, but I don't think he demands the same coverage.

Excellent point about the Reality TV. It disgusts me and I love it at the same time.

Just had a thought, wonder if they will "Mike up" either of these guys for the game. That would make for some great sound bites right there !

Irvin was a serial cheater, drug abuser, and womanizer but Sherman has a behavior problem? Okay.[/quote
Who said Sherman wasn't smart, the guy did well at Stanford he's obviously a smart guy. I don't care for his antics, but I don't have to. I also think it's a persona he puts on. I seriously doubt it's his true behavior.

I love Dez and Irvin, but couldn't stand Sanders. I'll never forget Sanders dancing like a fool while his teammate was being carried off the field. I think Sherman is close to Sanders than Irvin or Dez,

Really?

Yes really, people are using the excuse that Sherman's off the field antics are the reason why they don't like him, but have no problem with the way Michael Irvin lived his troubled life off the field. That's called hypocrisy.

Richard Sherman is a good guy. He is smarter than people realize and is a fantastic player.

Smart indeed. The guy saw an opportunity and capitalized. He's always been a great player. He essentially used the media late last season to vault him into one of the more recognizable players in the league, which has led to numerous endorsement opportunities. Can't remember the last time a cornerback has been so prominent in national TV commercials......since Deion.
