I would agree that it is selfhish and stupid of Big Ben. Personally though, I would not put riding a helmet in the same category as doing drugs.

I may not have a multi million dollar contract with the fate of a team riding on my shoulders, but more importantly I have a wife and kids to support. I have done and most everyone has at some point done something really stupid that could be extremely dangerous and selfish, but I would not put myself in the same category as a drug user.

I am agreeing with you, but I think what Big Ben did belongs in a different category as drug use and/or criminal activity.

What if it was alcohol or other substance (e.g., andro) that are LEGAL?

Someone who was an alcoholic and tested positive for alcohol or a body building supplement that the league bans several times would get the same suspension as a cocaine user? Same outcome. The legal/not legal distinction doesn't concern me.

I agree, its hard to describe it, unless you have ridden a bike before. Its not even the same as wearing even a simple baseball cap. Heck even if you don't have hair, the breeze on bare skull is still different than one when wearing a Helmet ;)

Mercy Hospital Press Conference:

He is in serious but stable condition.
Having surgery now.
He is coherent.

Wow, doesn't seem like minor one then. I though reading the initial reports, thought maybe it was 1-2 week injury at best. If it is serious condition, then I would think it might be more of few weeks recovery period, if the surgery is to skull etc.

Just being in "surgery" isn't necessarily a bad thing. Could be the jaw getting wired shut -- or even more likely plastic surgery on the gashes.

I had a very good friend killed on a motorcycle. You have to be a moron to ride a motorcycle to begin with. Taking it one step further and not wanting to use a helmet while exposing the other 90% of your body doesn't seem like a stretch to me. You're already demonstrating limited common sense when you hop on one to begin with.

I couldn't agree more. I'm paralyzed from the neck down because of an accident in '85. (I was 16.) A guy pulled out in front of me. I almost died as it was. Without a helmet my head woulda been smashed to pulp. Riding a motorcycle takes idiocy, I don't care who you are. Riding a motorcycle sans helmet is suicide.

Live free or die, state motto in NH.

Did a 150 mile ride yesterday will Rolling Thunder (look them up, they support Military veterans groups (http://www.rollingthunder1.com/st-chapters.htm)). From Stuart air base Newburgh NY police escorted ride through the grounds of West Point and back. We all wore helmets, required in NY

No helmet law in CT and I for the most part, don't wear one...Put me on your idiot list.

NY, Mass require them, so when I leave CT I need to bring one.

Freedom is a funny thing. Does anyone here ride a bicycle and not wear a helmet ? Like Hos said, the feeling of the wind in your hair is hard to describe.

Like Ben said, riding in groups is safer. I ride with a group of 8-10 folks generally. 10 straight pipe Hogs make a lot of noise, people notice you which makes for a safer riding experience.

LOUD PIPES SAVES LIVES !
You know it!

I do wear a helmet. Just not every ride. I should, and I know I should. I still don't.

latest word was that he was conscious but groggy afterwards. BLeeding from head but conscious. Probably will be ok - but still dumb.

He had talent but was dumb before, so as long as he still has the talent, you won't notice anything different about him.

A former girlfriend of mine said in the ER they call helmets "Brain Crates"...

If the accident is serious, the skull is likely cracked inside the hemet anyway and all it does is hold it together until it is removed and spills out...

I hear some call motorcycle riders, "organ donors".

People on a Steerlers board are saying the woman that hit him is at fault. Supposedly she drove right into him.

That's the way it seems to be, but of course that doesn't excuse Big Ben for not wearing a helmet... a motorcycle carries with it a certain element of danger, and only a fool would climb on one without a helmet...

This is particularly true of a young man making a ridiculous amount of money for a short amount of time...

Sure, and that is why I am technically agreeing with you. From an NFL standpoint suspension, missing games due to riding without a helmet, or things of that matter is all the same. Missed games due to stupidity, cockiness, drug use, incarceration, or whatever is all the same in the end. Missed games hurt your team and fellow players.

I am just arguing the non NFL point of view. I do not equate a drug user, criminal activity and so on with a dude riding without a helmet.

Yes, they do. All over America you'll hear this.

I'm curious why more isn't being said about Bledsoe doing this same thing.

The only problem with that is there aren't that many organs left to donate after a crash. ;)

Now John clayton is on ESPN news saying the cops are looking for a car with Maine plates that may have caused Ben to crash into the other car.

I think that's pretty simple - Bledsoe's not the one in the hospital.

But that doesn't make him any less of a moron. Believe me, should he get injured, you'll hear even more outcry. This thread would be going on 500 posts now.
