Romo’s trade value may not be worth as much as you think

If Bradford got a rd1 pick theres no doubt Romo will get one for Dallas and probably even more. As bad as QB play is right now in the NFL there will be a team that will give Dallas what it wants.
Bradford was unique situation where a team felt they had a super bowl team and lost their qb. To get that kind of value you need a situation like that but romo is also much older and has injury concerns
I think we can get a 2nd from a team with a bad record and to me that's a good value. I would love a 1st but don't know that there is a team that would do that. But you never know what can happen as far as an injury to a teams qb or something

The better Dak gets the lower Romo's value becomes. He has probably practically destroyed it already.....

The only leverage JJ has is the fact that Tony is under contract-- and we don't "have" to move him. Tony is the best QB available on the market, but we won't give him away for nothing. JJ's recent remarks about "not even considering" Tony being on a different team next year is all posturing.

Exactly, all these articles are posturing by each side.

Jones says Romo will play five more years and there aren't enough draft picks anywhere to make the Cowboys trade him.

(Jones means they want a 1st).

NFL GMs say they would offer a 4th round pick.

(NFL GMs mean they know the real bidding starts in the offseason).

Keep in mind that there are potentially several QB's that will be available next offseason.

I've seen the list somewhere and it was lengthy.

The best option for us is a June 1st cut -gives us more cap flexibility. Jones will designate him as June 1st early in the off season to be fair to Romo.

Nobody is going to trade anything other than a trivial pick for Romo. Has a huge cap figure, hardly played recently, injuries, age. We don't even know if Romo can even play a full game.

If Romo signs anywhere after being cut, it will be an incentive laden contract with much less money than now. A contender won't take a risk on him. May become a transitional player somewhere like the Browns. Even if he signs, there's a good chance he fails a medical or doesn't get through camp.

Romo will renegotiate his deal to get traded. I think we'll get a conditional draft pick for him. Probably a 2nd rounder that will fall to a 3rd or 4th if he plays less than half the teams snaps or something. Any team trading for him has to protect themselves against another injury.

Been telling everyone all along that Romo's trade value isn't what they think. Still can't believe some think Romo would fetch a #1. You have a few who think we can get a #1 and other picks for him.

Romo is cleared to play medically, the idea he fails a physical is completely made up.

And for contenders "not taking a risk on him", how could some teams NOT take the gamble? The Jets have had a QB with a QB rating higher than 80 ONE TIME since 2008 and that was a fluke season from Fitzpatrick, who has come back down to earth. Romo's career average QB rating is 97.

Is a four time Pro Bowl QB worth more than their 2nd round pick of 2015, Devin Smith, who has all of 9 career catches? Or 2013 2nd rounder Geno Smith who failed as a starter?

I agree, but I think the pick will be something like a 2nd in 2017 and a conditional pick in 2018 that depends on how Romo plays.

Any decent QB (like Kirk Cousins) will be resigned by his current team. The best QB that is likely to hit the market is Ryan Fitzpatrick, who has a 12 Million dollar salary this year and a QB rating of 68.

As Dak Prescott has solidified his hold on the starting quarterback role with the Dallas Cowboys, it’s left Tony Romo’s future up in the air. While Jerry Jones has made it clear that he would like to keep Romo in Dallas, Romo still wants to play, and he could be in the market for a new team this offseason. Romo should be a hot commodity for quarterback-needy teams, but his value may be lower than expected.

General managers around the league project that the Cowboys could get “some sort of mid to late-round conditional pick” for Romo, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortenson.

Quarterback market watch
As holiday shoppers make out their shopping lists, NFL teams already have theirs waiting, especially at the eclectic quarterback position, where teams have any number of ways in which they can spend their money.

The list of quarterbacks who could or will be available in the coming offseason is of a much higher profile than in the past, but each quarterback comes with his own questions. Still, the following is a list of QBs that teams such as the Bears, Jets, 49ers and others will be sifting through:

i

Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
Though Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has no plans to move on from Romo, many people around the league believe Dallas will end up doing so.

At this time last year, Nobody would have said Sam Bradford was worth a first.

It is impossible to predict Romo's trade value.

I would like to package Romo and a 2nd round pick for a top 5 pick in the 2017 draft. Like Romo and our 2nd for the Jets 1st round pick

That's true, but we do know the supply and demand side of the issue. There are a lot fewer quality QBs than starting positions - and its rare that a QB with Romo's upside is available in a trade. We don't know Romo's trade value, but its safe to say its more than a conditional 5th that some reporters are floating out there.

I think it's as high as a 1st but there are just too many variables to know.

If teams think the Cowboys are definitely moving on from him then the value goes down. The Eagles were content to keep Bradford which increased his value.

How many teams want him? Two or more and the value goes up. Teams generally know if other teams are in the mix on this type of trade.

Does Romo want to keep playing if he has to go to another team? He would have to be all-in when meeting with other teams for them to want to trade for him.

Do the Cowboys let emotion get in the way of making the best deal? They can't wait until summer time to decide that they are not keeping him. I'm sure McClay and Stephen will want to move on and get a pick but Jerry tends to get attached to players.

That list makes Romo's value seem really high.

The Skins can Franchise Cousins again and I don't see any other legit starters on the list.

Yes. Reasonable minds can draw different conclusions from the same facts.

Romo is and has been a much better player than Bradford. Bradford has also had injury concerns.

On a great team he would make them an instant contender. How is it far fetched to think he is worth more than Bradford?

I understand why some would have a hard time believing we would get significant compensation for Romo due to age and injury concerns. But top 5 QBs don't become available very often, and Romo is a top 5 QB.
