Seriously, 16 games 19 picks... that's to much regardless of who else did it or how many times he passed

Spin it which ever way you want though

It's called perspective... you should try it. Looking at a number and saying its too high with no thought behind it is embarrassing.

In 2001, Kurt Warner threw 22 interceptions in far fewer attempts than Romo (546) for a whopping interception % of 4.0. Was that too many?

Warner was the 2001 MVP.

Interceptions are a dumb stat, guys. All it tells you is the ball left the QB's hands and ended up in the defense's hands before it hit the ground. It could be all on the receiver (hits them in the chest, pops in the air), all on the QB (horrible throw), inconsequential (end of half Hail Mary) or somewhere in between. And yes, touchdowns are about as worthless.

Good point. Context doesn't matter. Gotcha.

It's not even about who the QB is. It's the difference between quantity and rate. You should be measuring rate, but you're sticking with quantity for whatever reason. But *nobody* is disputing that the team and Romo gave the ball away too many times last year.

He's showing that once you get past Miles and Dez as WR targets, the int rate sky-rockets.

I'm sure you got that, but just making sure.
I'm not so sure he got it, but thanks for trying to explain it to him.

Small quibble. Nelson had a case of "Austin-itis" and exited a bunch of games with hamstring injuries. He may have played in 12 games -- but more realistically probably played 9 games worth.
Cobb, Jones, Finley, Nelson, and Jennings each had more receptions than any Dallas player outside the top 3 (Witten, Dez, Miles).

And Romo threw more than 100 more passes than Rodgers!

Witten was targeting a mind boggling 150 times last season -- the most for any non-WR in the NFL.

Then so is turnover differential.

So what should one use to evaluate Romo? Shoe size?

It's a pretty dramatic stat from 2012 and shows a huge number of those ints had to do with who was throwing to.

I would not compare Romo to Rodgers though.

It seemed like he was trying to say that Rogers had less picks because he had 4 legit targets to throw to as opposed to Romo who only had 3, which was why he threw so many picks.

If he didn't trust the guys, he shouldn't have thrown it there way. He certainly never did with Bennett when he was here. Its not an excuse. Its got alot more to do with our weak OL and simply bad decisions by Tony last year than it does the guys he was throwing to.

If we want to have any kind of success this season that number needs to come way down whether Romo passes 20 or whether he passes 50 times a game.

Trying to sugarcoat it doesn't really change that so why even bother doing it?

I know i know Romo is perfect and it's all Garrett/Dez/Miles/Ogletree/Harris/Wittens fault and i really don't care, i'm not trying to blame or defend anyone the bottom line is that number needs to come down whether you can dig up a stat the makes it look a little nicer or not.

It's not sugarcoating to say that even at a low interception rate you'll still end up with a lot of picks if you throw the ball a lot. That's just simple math. My only point is that you can't just look at the interception total, as you did, and conclude that your QB is not taking enough care of the ball.

How long are you two going to have this argument over semantics?

You both agree that Romo turned it over too much, yet the bickering continues?

Again, idgit is involved so not too suprising..

We're not quibbling over semantics. It's not the meaning of any word that's being debated. He just used the wrong measure for the argument he's trying to make and doesn't want to concede the point.

But, I appreciate you pointing out that I don't let inaccuracies slide when I see them if the inaccuracies are just to try to make everybody unhappy with the Cowboys.

Where did i conclude this and say he wasn't?

If you are averaging more then 1 pick a game that number needs to come down or you're not going to have much success. I really don't care about who's to blame or not cause at the end of the day you're still giving the ball away at least once a game. We're not good enough on offense or defense to overcome that so it's a problem, and it needs to be fixed.

Did you ever think that maybe he threw a lot of passes in the 2nd half after we were down a bunch and the other team was playing prevent? A lot easier to complete passes in that situation.

With that said, you are right that the more passes thrown the higher potential for interceptions, but boy stats can really hide a lot.

The most likely way to cut down on the interception rate is to have Romo and the receivers on the same page with all the route adjustments. Dez, Ogletree, and the other role WRs all had issues with that early. It sorted out with Dez after 8 or 9 weeks, and when Harris emerged late, we were in pretty good shape.

The other obvious way to cut down on the rate he throws picks is to stay out of the low percentage passing situations you get into when you're down by multiple scores or your fighting neck and neck for a win in the fourth quarter. The Bears game is a good example of this, where in the second half we were put in throwing situations and had to take chances that led directly to turnovers. This is probably what you're referring to, and, if it is, then I agree. Hopefully, with the defensive changes we get a lot more takeaways and turn those possessions into points to alleviate some of the problems here.

And, yes, you can't just look at the number 19 and conclude that you can't compare one player to another because of it. There are a ton of not-so-subtle factors that contribute there.

I was referring more to the 2nd Giants game, and the Washington game. I'm sure there were a few others as well like those. Games where we were behind early and teams just played a prevent defense so they wouldn't get beat deep.

Idgit, you are alright in my book. I usually disagree with you on most of what you type but I like you because you aren't a blind homer, you are just a regular homer who at times will be critical. I can appreciate that.
