Romo was constantly being asked to do too much and forced to carry the team.He tried in vein many times to will this team to win only to end up as the goat. All we can hope is that this organization doesn't put that same undue pressure on Dak.
Amen. Romo's successor -- whether it's Dak or somebody else -- is going to need a complete team just as much as Staubach or Aikman did.

Playoff wins
with Top 10 Defense and Top 10 Rushing Yards
Staubach 7 seasons, 12 wins
Aikman 6 seasons, 10 wins (all Top 5 in defense and rushing yards)
Romo 1 season, 1 win

without
Staubach 2 seasons, 0 wins
Aikman 6 seasons, 1 win
Romo 8 seasons, 1 win

Wow, nice work backing it up with facts! Pretty sad to see in black and white how badly an excellent qbs career has been wasted.

These are the average NFL ranks of the player's (or team's) 7 best seasons. Quarterbacks are ranked according to passer rating.

I never said Romo deserves a free pass, that's just you overstating my argument into one you can defeat. It isn't that the defense's mistakes or the front office's mistakes are any more important than Romo's -- it's that there have been far more of them.

If lack of playoff success is so important to you, how come the reasons for it aren't?

I have seen him self impIode all by himself in big games enough to know that he doesn't have what it takes to lead a team to the super bowl and play well. Now he is old and hobbled. It's time to move on from Romo. I'm ready for Dak "the future" Prescott. Romo will alway be remembered as a qb who was very good during the regular season but not good enough when it mattered most.

Thats right Romo has been maddening at times. Part of the reason losing him these last two seasons is such a shame is he seems to have grown and matured as a decision maker. Now youll never be able to take the gunslinger mentality out of him, thats what makes him great and makes you pull your hair out at the same time. Heck he idolized Favres game. You know the same qb thats thrown more INTs than anyone in history. But at the end of the day they are/were both great qbs. Ive said it before too, Romo was never set up to succeed. He played for a long time with out todays dominant oline and with a weak running game, all coupled with a porous defense that has a tendency to collapse in the 4th quarter(its no supprise he has the most 4th quarter comebacks of any QB) Think of the years of Julius Jones, MB3, and Felix. Hes had 6 seasons without a 1K rb. Romo was constantly being asked to do too much and forced to carry the team.He tried in vein many times to will this team to win only to end up as the goat. All we can hope is that this organization doesnt put that same undue pressure on Dak.

Nice post but I don't think it is fair to Favre to conpare him with Romo. Favre is a HOF qb who has showed up in the biggest of games.

Sadly, Dak can excel as Wilson did and the Cowboys still lose double digit games. Too much of the Cowboys' meager recent success has been predicated on Romo's ability to be perfect or pull off Houdini acts.

And we don't have a dominating defense like Russ did.

People can say what they want, Daks preseason performance isn't about the stats, it is how poised and confident he looked doing it. I think his upside is a better Russel Wilson. I believe we will get good enough QB play from him immediately to win games with his supporting cast and I think the best part is his arrow is not just pointing up it is pointed up in a steep incline.
Absolutely.............THAT is what gives me hope.

Should give all of us hope.

I'm curious to see how he handles adversity. That will tell us a lot as well.

AND, we can't forget Morris/Eze.............Witten /Bease

Nice OP, perchy

Will @ufcrules1 please respond to this? Failing that maybe he should bow out? Quitting when you're behind is less shameful than powering headlong into the night.

I think what makes Dak different is the mental part of his game
Time will tell but I feel the kids going to do real well

It took Romo 7 years to figure out that he couldnt win it all on his own and NOT take some many dumb chances. He still hasnt figured out how to throw the ball away. Poise and decision making on stuff like that Dak seems way ahead of Romo was at the beginning of his career.

Agreed.

This defense is still at least one draft away from being a top-10 defense IMO.

To me it's far better than '13, a little better than '14 & '15.

But it's still a middling defense.

Maybe Favre having a Top 10 defense 8 different seasons had something to do with his playoff success. Without one, he wasn't any more successful in big games than Romo has been.

Playoff wins
with Top 10 Defense
Favre 8 seasons, 12 wins
Romo 1 season, 1 win

without
Favre 10 seasons, 1 win
Romo 8 seasons, 1 win

People keep saying Dak doesn't have the D Russ had

Russ didn't have nearly the weapons Dak has...

No excuses...just win

Problem with this analysis is that most of those other guys spent more time going against backups.

Preacher my fellow fan...preach...

Read this...

Eliminating preseason game 4 gives us a smaller, but actually a better sample to draw from. I took these same 20 QB and compared their performances in games 1-3 only, removing any players with fewer than 40 total attempts (Dak had 50), any who had more than 20 attempts in the first game (Dak had 12), any who did not have at least 10 attempts with a rating of 85 in the third game (Dak had a 23 attempts with a 99 rating), and any who had more than two-thirds of his attempts in just one game.

137.8 Dak Prescott 39 of 50 454 yd 5 td 0 int
119.4 Russell Wilson 35 of 52 464 yd 5 td 1 int
112.2 Nick Foles 36 of 57 507 yd 6 td 2 in
99.5 Blake Bortles 28 of 46 435 yd 1 td 0 int
84.6 Sam Bradford 27 of 49 270 yd 2 td 0 int
