The good news (or more good news) is that we get to see more of Dak this week, and most likely 3/4 of a game next week.

No Dez, but Dak already works daily mostly with Butler anyway, so they have some chemistry going.

Come to think of it, I guess Romo won't have Dez this week. A bit of a bummer, as it means he may only have worked with him a few plays in the pre-season practice games.

anyway, I'm looking forward to tonight.
Not yet the real thing, but closer than it has been!

Its also a reminder that a lot of scouting reports are nonsense. Not only was Witten rated as the 2nd or 3rd round pick but some scouts questioned his toughness. Fast forward to today - one of the pictures hanging in the new practice facility is the iconic picture of Witten against Philly running downfield without a helmet, looking for contact.

So very true, we rightly read some of the best scouting evaluations and there are many cases where they misevaluate or can not account for a player having success or failure at the next level.

These evaluations are guidlines but they are not absolute by any means, Dak has more to prove to be sure but I would love for Dak to prove all the pundits wrong and become the next Cowboys starting QB.

The intangables are hard for some evluators to account for including his performance when it is game time.

They were talking on the Break about how some of Dak's practice reps were terrible but once the games begin he was destroying defenses.

I'm tired of hearing how Dak is only playing against vanilla defenses. This is true, and I've made that point, but it's also true for the rest of the rookies and veterans. Why aren't Goff and Lynch lighting it up then as well?
Because he's playing with a better offense and he may just be a better QB. One thing about SEC QB's, well two things. One, they're usually not great NFL QBs (see Mettenburger, Russell and Tebow) and two, they do play and practice against the better defenses. One reason Dak wasn't projected above the 3rd round because in the accuracy department he was not good in 2015 and actually regressed.

He has caught everyone by surprise including all of the astute talent guys in the NFL. No one saw this coming but the real question is still the same. When it gets real, how will be perform? When the pressure comes and he's not playing catch with his receivers, how will he do? Until we get to see that in some form of sustained action, it's all just conjecture at this point. When the DC's prepare for him specifically, we will know a lot more.

I'll mention the quote I heard in preseason game 1:

Sean Lee said Dak wasn't a typical young QB in practice, he was already looking off safeties and LB's, pump faking to gain separation.

This sounds familiar to the last time a defender said that about his young QB teammate, that was Woody describing a young Antonio.

The difference between Dak and other SEC quarterbacks is perhaps that he had to carry the load on his back. Mississippi State doesn't have the depth and talent of other teams in the SEC. He took them to #1 on his back for five weeks. His last year there, the offensive talented was depleted.

That's a fact and he rose to prominence from nowhere and lost his Mom during this time there and from what I've read, he and his older brother we're really tight with their Mom. Sometimes, it is just impossible to shut off the emotions from loss.

I don't think it can get overplayed the deer in the headlights a kid can have being the leader of a team from Starkville, MS that rises to #1. The plus side of those headlights gave him a little feel for what it will be like should he be the starting QB for the most polarized and publicized sports franchise in history. I know it's pretend season and the D's are vanilla but the kid just looks like a natural to me. If I watched him and didn't know how long he'd been there, I'd guess at 3 years and maybe even the starter.

Yep, he passes the eyeball test. Goff, Lynch, Wentz, Hackenberg, Cook....they are all facing vanilla D's, too.

Granted, the pass protection and running game here is ridiculous right now, and that's certainly a big part of his early success.

Just think... Dak gets to sit behind Romo for 2-3 years and learn the game without the pressure to come in and "be the savior." The raw skills, heart, and leadership ability appear to be there-- but now he also gets the benefit of QB friendly on-ramp to the NFL.

Dude just looks better equipped than Goff and Wentz and any other QB before or after him mentally and physically. Dallas could be on the cusp of the best QB taken since I dunno when. Could we be that lucky? He literally fell into our laps after trying to reach for Lynch and Connor.

Maybe there is a football god after all.
Or, there
FWIW...

Adam Schefter:
I spoke to a couple of different people this week, who, when they'd heard all this Dak Prescott conversation, went and looked at the film of the guy. They were blown away at the decisions he was making, the skills he demonstrated, looking downfield, playing like a veteran. You could say, "It's preseason." That's what I said. I talked to a couple of people and asked, "What do you think? Is this overblown? Are we getting too excited over a guy after two preseason games?" And they went and looked at the film and said, "This guy has got it. He's got it. They've found their quarterback of the future." If they did hit on that pick the way that other highly intelligent people think they hit on the pick, they're set for the next 12-15 years.

The best part of the audio clip? Their tone as the call to Adam Schefter ended and they went to commercial. You would think they just delivered the news that a bear had escaped from the zoo and boarded a bus full of 1st graders - no survivors.

IDK about 3 years. Tony better not get hurt and have to sit for 5+ games.

Saw a tweet that said none of Dak's passes in these late few games came from under center and all were bootlegs, playaction, rollouts, etc.. Just something to think about.

Another tweet from a local media member said that one of those to Butler was under center.

That tweet was wrong. The 2nd pass from the dolphins game was from under center. Yes, it was play action but who cares. The very next throw was a regular dropback pass with no play action though. Then the next pass was a touchdown to Dez that wasn't a bootleg/PA/rollout or any of that. Whoever you saw tweet that is dumb or blind.

None of that stuff matters anyway. If the playcalling includes a lot of variation, that's a good thing not a bad one.

If he goes beserk again tonight, the Dak train is going to be pretty much unstoppable at this point.

We may have a few more fans wondering why Dak isn't starting over Romo. LOL.

Which shuts us up for awhile pot-shotting the owner GM.

Ehhhhhh, let's recall that said owner GM was also ready to draft Connor Cook around this part of the draft, who is a bum. I really cringe to think what would have happened at our 4th round comp pick if both Cook and Prescott were there.

The thing to me is if you put dak in the situation Goff or wentz are in its a different ballgame.

You handed dak the top oline. A top 5 back and Alfred Morris. A hall of fame te and arguably the best wideout in the game. This kid was good in college but with this team he can become great. I think it helps how we've drafted over the years.
This is a very good point. The situations these rookie QB's end up in is almost as important as their talent level as to how successful they ultimately become.

Guys like Tim Couch as Derrick Carr may have had better careers had they not been thrown into dumpster fires as rookies.

They should have his navy seal speech that he gave Garret to convince him he was ok to play with a lacerated spleen.
