To be clear... our offense didn't play uncharacteristically better or worse than they'd been playing.

Our defense did.

And I don't know how the Rams could have played much better on offense.

So, the point being... if you actually did merely stop them 2-3 times and give the ball to our offense, conventionally speaking we score at least one more time if not twice, and they score at least one less time, maybe twice.

That is the problem the offense isnt up to the task to win shootouts against teams over .500. "Good enough" offenses dont get shut out in a meaningful DEcember road game, they dont put up 20 against TB and let them hang around, They dont put up 8 points to start the season at Car, 13 at Seattle, 16 at Houston, 17 at Was, 14 vs the Titans. That is about half the games not scoring over 20 points. They put up 30 or more points against the 5-11 Jags, 7-9 Wash , and end of year game against the 5-11 Giants.

Compared that with :
  • The rams scored 30 or more 12 times
  • NO did it 11 times
  • NE did it 7 times and put 41 and 37 in the playoffs
  • KC did it 12 times
We all were happy the defense made strides this year, but you are going to have to score against the top teams. Top teams know this - they will sacrifice some defense because they know most teams cant sustain the scoring. So if people were being honest, the defense was going to give up 30 points at some point in the playoffs on the road, the offense cannot compensate.

Dude, they were literally 4-12 the year before McVay showed up. Goff was terrible. You don’t get to rewrite history just to fit your narrative.
coaching sucked. I don't disagree. but its not like they had to rebuild. they had to rescheme. which they did.

That team had a backup QB who I will argue has played at a higher level than any QB this decade. I’ll put Foles 2013 vs any QB this decade, and regained his 2013 form in last years playoffs.

The Cowboys had Weeden and god awful Cassel. And they made a terrible decision to go from Murray to Randle. Big time downgrade

And the coaching staff doesn’t take any blame for that? Shouldn’t they tell the front office, “Hey, we need a starting RB and a backup QB.”

And that doesn’t explain why Weeden won all of his games as a backup for the Texans.

He took over a mediocre football team with a QB who was headed to bustville and elevated them with legit coaching. He embraces the chess side of football and his team has benefited just like the Cowboys or any other team would if they had a good coach like this.

JG's lack of success isn't an accident. You don't go this long without playoff success by mistake.

His team was stacked with talent, they went out and paid for even more talent, something this team rarely do.

I was calling for us to hire Andy Reid the day Philly fired him.

He’s struggling to win a Super Bowl but my gosh is he a great coach. His offenses are so hard to defend and now he has a wizard at QB.

He’s probably have won with Romo by now, because that was a more mature Romo he would have inherited. Reid was fired the exact time Jerry gave Romo and new contract and started removing play-calling from Garrett.

It's peculiar why people just can't admit things like maybe McVay is a better coach but that you still have faith in Garrett to get there?

Why does any defense of Garrett have to involve tearing down the accomplishments of other coaches?

Which makes real coaching and not this bottom of the barrel game day coaching even more important.

He certainly inherited some good players but not a good football team.

It's not like Garrett was handed chopped liver himself when he took over............. Ware, Romo, Witten, etc. One of the great myths is that Garrett took over this joke of a talented team. They were just a team that was broken by Phillips, very much like how the Rams were broken under Fisher.
but the team lacked in some major areas. and btw, McVay went shopping and added Peters, Talib, Suh, Fowler, Brooks. that takes management support and open check book. that list alone is similar to what we started with.

So McVay had little to do with it? Instead the Rams were just gonna come together at some point under any coach and take off?
Never said he had nothing to do with it, but he was definitely coming into a good situation.

The other thing that often has me chuckling and will repeat itself this year as it has for every season is that leading up to the 2019 season, some of these same people will bristle if there is any Cowboys fan that doesn't think the Cowboys are one of the most talented teams in the league. That if a fan thinks they won't make the playoffs or will be an early exit, they are unreasonable and ridiculous.

Then the season happens, we don't make the playoffs or bow out early and their battle cry is suddenly, hey, how can you blame Garrett? His roster isn't complete and how can you expect him to compete with more talented teams?

Wash, rinse and repeat.
LOL. yes.. I have seen this. some teams complete rosters in 2-3 years, some need a decade and churn a few careers

Goff was awful.

Gurley was struggling. Often injured. BTW, CJ Anderson looks All Pro thanks to coaching.

But forget all that.

Even if you believe they had amazing talent they still weren't a good team. Why? Because coaching.

The Cowboys get nothing from their coaches. They are all talent and will to win.

The players have issues with our coaching and so do a lot of former players in the media.

It's widely accepted that we do nothing special from a strategy standpoint and, regardless of what side you're on, no coach should get 10+ years to prove themselves without some prior success.
I don't disagree with coaching making a difference. that's not the argument. but McVay had some nice pieces in place and some talent to work with.

the challenge for any dallas coach regardless of whom having been in charge is dealing with Jerry Meddling. would McVay have found success in Dallas with Jerry Meddling? not so sure.

So let see Payton with 2:00 in the game tied, already in fg range. Throws on 1st down, stops the clock is good game day coaching.

And yet he still coached them well.

Why is it so tough for you to admit that? Why are you Garrett guys so reticent to admit the real possibility that McVay is probably a better coach?

He's beaten Garrett twice in head to head games. He's won more playoff games in 2 years than Garrett has won in 8. He's been to a NFCCG game and a SB, something Garrett has never done.

Why is it that he's just the beneficiary of a talented team and that poor old Jason just hasn't had such great luck?

And I said at the time they were making a mistake when they benched Weeden

Garrett was undressed by Belichick and he took it out on Weeden

Still, Garrett’s biggest failures were 2011-‘13

Cowboys should’ve won 11 or possibly 12 in 2011

They should’ve won at least 10 in 2013. Monte Kiffin killed them this year

Jerry has meddled to this coaches benefit.

Jerry has gave this guy everything he needs to have success and the only thing he provides is mediocre results because he's a mediocre coach.

Jerry has even built teams for him that basically takes all coaching out of account and puts all the pressure on our run game to impose their will on teams.

Jerry has done his job. Jerry's biggest mistake to himself and the fans is not getting a legit coach to make this thing fly.

Sure. But he still did a very good coaching job. Your continually try to diminish that by seemingly arguing that he's just gotten lucky with a real talented team.
