Should Dak get a raise in pay this year or next?

Hell no. This has been a magical season, but he needs to string a few of these together before we should even consider giving him anything.

One thing to consider....how thankful should Dak be (and probably is) that the Cowboys drafted him when they did?
  • Another team, no Zeke/Dez/Beasley/Witten/OL
  • Likely never gets a chance to start unless a similar rash of QB injuries
  • How much further does he drop in the draft, making even less $
I'm sure Dak is thankful beyond all measure for how his life has gone from the final day of the draft till now.

ok I dont mean like 20 mil a year or even10 or 5.
I was thinking if I was the owner, I would give this kid a raise to at least 2 mil a year, and maybe to 5 a year,
then tell him to keep that in mind when he is signing 2nd contract.

It isnt right to expect him to play for 4th round salary, which is what $500,000 a year?
I dont know how much of that he would have after taxes, but it doesnt seem like enough.

The way I look at it he has done enough to earn 2 mil this year already !

So what would you do if your the owner?

NO and since the Cowboys are 17 million over the cap at the end of the year, HELL NO!! He's on his rookie contract, one year doesn't make a career, see RG3 for how things can change fast!!

I nominate this post for worst post of the year.

There is this thing called a salary cap. Right now the Cowboys are in a position where they can build the defense without having to pay Dak more money. He's under his rookie contract.

Oh and there's this thing called the CBA

Would be tough to keep him at his current contract with him being the starting QB and far outplaying the contract he signed as a 4th round pick. If he wins rookie of the year and league MVP, it wouldn't be right keeping him at his current and it could cause an issue especially with him being the starter going forward. He would clearly deserve a raise over what he's making now based on his performance and now being the starting QB. You have to make some exceptions when a player far outplays their contract and earns a starting job especially at QB.

No, KJJ, it won't be hard at all. He is not even eligible for a revised contract (more pay) until a certain amount of time has passed on his current deal. It was bargained for under the CBA.

I haven't looked into the CBA and it could be that Jerry couldn't pay Dak more even if he wanted to. You would think he could tear his rookie contract up if Dak were to lead us to a championship this season. It doesn't seem fair if a 4th round pick earns a starting job and leads a team to a championship that they still have to play under such a low paying contract for a starting QB. When I get the chance I'll look into the CBA to see if it covers a situation where a player far outplays their contract. You would think there would be something in the agreement that would take into account if a lower draft pick outplays their contract.

Dak has come into the best situation of just about any rookie QB ever. Best OL in football. Best RB in football. Big play receiver in Dez. Two amazing ball control guys in Witten and Beasley. It's not meant to minimize what he has done, because if it was that easy, Weeden and Cassell and anyone else could do it. By the same token it is fair to suggest he has been fortunate to have the supporting cast that he does.

There is that thing with bonus money...I do remember the past few years several guys getting money added at the end of the year based upon their performance.

Here is an article about it, last year Lael earned another 277k due to this.

It has been stated multiple times......he can't get a new deal until after his third season....RWilson didn't get one and Dak won't either

LCollins could actually get one first as a UDFA......they only have to wait 2 years

Dak with qualify for around 300k in pay for play bonuses because he took so many snaps as a low paid player

Then there is something in the CBA for a little extra money but it's based on snaps not performance.

They can't do anything now, but if things continue the way we hope they do, you can be sure he'll be extended long before he sniffs free agency.

After 2018 DAL should offer 5/60m with 60m guaranteed......it would be hard to turn down 60m guaranteed

No he is on a 4 year deal and because of the price tag this will allow the Cowboys more room to acquire more talent on defense. Much the same way Seattle was able to do with Wilson in the early part of his contract as a mid rd pick.
