If Gurley is available he is the BPA at 27 by a pretty significant margin...
I agree with you. I can't see a DL, OT or CB who would be as valuable as Gurley would be to the Cowboys at no. 27. Gurley is the best combination of speed and power at the position in at least 4-5 years. He is not Adrian Peterson coming out of OU but Gurley is still awfully good. Unfortunately, I think he (and Gordon) will be gone by time the Cowboys are on the clock. If that's the case, I wonder if Coleman will last to 60.
I've been on the Peterson band wagon all along. I expect him to be in great shape, and behind the best run blocking line in football, I think he would elevate our offense to above where it was last year. Other than Marshawn Lynch, I don't know of any back who could have done a better job than Murray did last year. But I also understand the concerns about age - 30 being the hit-the-wall mark for RBs - and Peterson being out of football for so long. And, of course, I agree that a deal for Peterson would have to be cap-smart and short-term. The Cowboys have drafted well in round 1 lately, but their 10-year history for round 2 has been less than impressive. So, for me, I do wrestle with who would be there at 60 vs. giving up that pick for Peterson. I'm no cap guru by any means, so I don't know if a trade means assuming his current contract or not; if it does, he would be too expensive. If the FO can sign him to a more cap-friendly contract for 2-3 years, then trading a no. 2 for him would garner my support. Assuming Hardy is signed, the Cowboys won't have to reach for a rush lineman at 27. If Gordon/Gurley are gone, Dallas can look to BPA among CB, OLB, OT. If there is no trade for Peterson, the Cowboys can look to Coleman at 60 to ensure a strong running game in 2015.
My concern is if the Cowboys don't get Peterson and if Gurley and Gordon at gone by 27 and Coleman gone by 60, what options are left at RB? I don't have confidence in the committee the Cowboys have now. Without Peterson or one of among Gurley, Gordon or Coleman, I see the offense taking a step back in 2015. To me, Murray is clearly better than any combination of Randle, Williams, Dunbar and McFadden. Romo and the D both need a running game that can eat clock and physically wear down an opponent.
I've probably not been very realistic in my thinking, but it would be sweet to have Peterson and Gurley
both heading into 2015. That way, Romo ends a fine career with a solid running game (and perhaps a SB championship) and Romo's heir apparent, whoever that may be, will have the luxury of leaning on a strong running game to begin his career. It is a pass-happy league, but to win playoff games on the road, especially in bad weather, you need to run the ball and control the clock. Dallas had that formula last year and needs to continue that in order to have future success.
If the window was not closing so fast on Romo's career I would not be wanting Peterson as badly as I do. But I think Romo has two great years left and I also think Peterson does. Peterson will go down as a top-10 all-time running back in NFL history and I think he can do for Romo what Terrell Davis did for John Elway, and allow Romo to go out as the SB winner he deserves to be.
That's my gut feeling. I'm just glad there are much smarter people than myself who will make these decisions in the weeks ahead.
