Agree with this. Guess we are old fashion. I wish he would fix the problems first before getting creative with a bunch of new programs that may or may not be successful.

Chalk me up in that group too.
I watch football because I love it, that's what fans do. This marketing crap, the lousy 'artists' squalling on the field at half-time, pre-game, these silly gimmicks, etc, all garbage.

Godell stinks.

He is entirely about marketing the game. Even if it's at the expense of the game.

He is inconsistent with his "rulings" and seems to completely ignore the fiasco that is NFL officiating.

I am finding the NFL harder and harder to watch every season.

What do you think the owners pay him for? Marketing the game and putting more money in their pockets. That's all it has ever been about.

Here's the bottom line. Grew up Mr. Roger, attended the same school. He was a few years older then me but I knew him, knew his family and back then I would of not pissed on the guy if he was on fire.

He and his family were crooked SOB's, stole from the poor and gave to the rich. Never would give anyone who was less fortunate the time of day.

I know none of this should impact my judgment of him as the NFL commish but I can never help but feel he is only interested in those things that may benefit him and not what may benefit the league.

Dont be surprised at all to find out down the road the family ownes a clinic for head injuries or he has a close friend who just happened to find his way onto some committee for head injuries. Some how when his term is up he will of made himself a lot of money and those closer to him a lot of money and not just from his salary.

Funny, because that is exactly how I viewed him before reading of your experiences.

Man I sure do miss Tagliabue.

Are all of these ideas Goodell's or someone else's? It is a meeting to discuss different things, but it does not mean that Goodell came up with all of these ideas.

My guess is that's the case, particulary the international games. He's been quite open pushing that.

The Thursday and Saturday games may not have been proposed by him, but the point is that they will need to squeeze those games in somehow, and Goodell is the one that wants an 18 game season.

I'm actually against the cutting down of preseason as I think it hurts the quality of play of the league if you only have two games (less time to get the team on the same page, less time to pick the right player to stay on the squad, etc). And almost all of the major preseason injuries in the NFL over the years have happened in the first two games.

Here's a crazy thought. How about greatly improving the refereeing in the league? How about providing fans more of an option to watch the NFL Ticket? Just a couple of places to start.

Can anyone find the original article for this story? I'd like to read that instead of the blog entry.

Edit: Found this old article on yahoo, not the NY post.

Goodell expects multiple NFL games in Britain soon
By MATTIAS KAREN, AP Sports Writer

Buzz up! 43 Print
LONDON (AP)—NFL commissioner Roger Goodell expects the league to start playing multiple regular-season games in Britain in the next few years—an expansion that could lead to putting a franchise in London.

Goodell said Friday that “every indicator” shows the British market can support more games and that having a franchise here is of “tremendous interest” to the league. But he stopped short of giving a timeline for expanding the NFL’s overseas presence.

“The interest and the enthusiasm for our game continues to grow, and we want to feed that,” Goodell said. “We want to respond to that by hopefully bringing more to the UK.”

Goodell spoke at a sports conference Friday ahead of Sunday’s game between the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Wembley Stadium. It’s the third year in a row the NFL is staging a regular-season game in London, and the league is now looking into playing at least two games a year in Britain, he said. Aside from London, Manchester and Glasgow, Scotland, are being looked at as potential venues.

“I expect that sometime in the next couple of years, we could be playing multiple games here,” Goodell said. “If we brought more than one game here, and it continues to have the same kind of enthusiasm and growth of interest, I think that is about as good of an indicator you can get that it could successfully support a franchise. And that’s what we’re looking at.”

Staging a Super Bowl abroad, however, “is not something that is under active consideration,” Goodell said.

The league is considering expanding the regular season to 17 or 18 games, with a possibility for every team to play one game abroad. Patriots owner Robert Kraft said if the league wants more of the current franchises to travel internationally for games, the regular season should be extended so that teams can keep the same number of home games. The Bucs are giving up a home game this season.

“I’m not sure our fans would appreciate us giving up a regular-season (home) game, and I know I wouldn’t like to do that. But eventually I think there’s a chance of that if we expand the schedule,” Kraft said.

Kraft said placing an NFL team in London “would be the right thing to do some time in the next decade.”

Goodell said he would prefer a potential London-based team was a completely new franchise, rather than moving one from an existing market.

“We would like to keep all our teams where they are,” he said.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady(notes) didn’t sound too enthusiastic about playing for a team based in Europe.

“That would be challenging,” Brady said. “But I don’t see that happening any time soon.”

The league is also eyeing having a team in Los Angeles again, especially after California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill this week allowing the construction of a 75,000-seat stadium that developers hope will lure an NFL team back to the Los Angeles area.

“I think there are some positive developments going on there,” Goodell said. “But now we have to figure out how to pay for it. And in our economic system, that is a big challenge. It’s at least an $800 million stadium.”

He would not venture a guess as to what would come first, a team in London or Los Angeles.

“I don’t know about the timing as far as the sequence,” he said. “I would tell you that both markets are of tremendous interest to us.”

AP Sports Writer Chris Lehourites contributed to this report.

I think the owners will shoot down Goodell and Co. before too long.I'm just of the opinion that he's pissing off a few more owners everytime he opens his mouth.Perception is not always reality, but if an owners perception is that Goodell is harder on one than the other that does not bode well for his career.

As far as going abroad.
I don't think fining Bud Adams 250K won him any support there and I also don't believe Goodell has any support in Oakland.I think Jerry would vote against anymore games oversees as well,he has a new "toy" to pay for. Both the Jets and Giants are going into a new stadium,so I don't believe they will want to sacrifice any home game revenue for more games abroad. That's five teams that should be against it and I would think there are a few more as well.

Another thing Goodell has yet to address is officiating,I wonder why?Maybe Pereira and Goodell are butt buddies.Sure is funny Bud Adams is fined over obscene hand gestures,Jerry is fined over remarks about the CBA and revenue sharing.Yet after being quick to send a message with those fines ole' Roger can't find the balls to make a statement about the officiating or rather lack of officiating.Maybe Roger can't make a statement about bad officiating? He's afraid he'd have to fine himself.

A team in Brittain?

Give me a break.

Could you imagine the road games?

Die Goodell.

I just can't imagine the owners being ok w/ this idea. How stupid can the league be by doing that? Do they honestly think for a second that a team over the pond will have any success? What FA's will ever want to go play there?

Just a crock of you know what if you ask me.

Excellent point Yak. I think having the ticket available as PPV for every game would be an excellent idea.

Cowboys not on in your area? SELECT 772 to watch for only $12.99. :p:

It doesn't matter if the NFL is making 500,000,000 dollars a year. If they believe they can make even more than that they're going to do everything they can to make even more than that.

Greed is greed. It doesn't matter if you're doing it on the scale of someone whose making 50k a year if they can make 100k a year for what they're selling they're going to do it. The NFL is the exact same way on a much larger scale. They don't care that average Joes look at it and say "you already make so much money why do you need more?" They look at it that "yeah we make a lot of money but this way will allow us to make even more so we're going to do this."

It's the way of life. They're going to get all they can, whenever they can.

As much as i hate it this is exectly correct. And i cant say i blame them if theres a way to make money why wouldnt you do it. It sucks that it is going to hurt others in the counrty but that flat out doesnt matter to the nfl when they can make a ton of money.
I just hope it doesnt come back to bite them in the arse. I know that this is a stretch but an example of this coming back to kick the NFL In the arse would be you keep taking the games away from there home towns those towns will have to cut back on jobs due to less money coming in and that in turn will cause companies to elimante jobs and then people wont be able to buy tickets to go the games. And yes i realize thats a stretch but could it happen maybe?????

Hit it out of the park. Too many here dont see the big picture through the owners eyes. They have and will continue to have one of the hottest properties on the planet. Just follow the dollars. New money has to come from some where.

Every since the idiot destroyed the cheatriots' spygate tapes my respect for him became irredeemable. He is classless jerk who allowed the Bellicheat mystique to carry on. The only good thing is the NFL is too strong so it will survive his stupidity, long after he is gone.

Maybe in the short term....but what it's going to do is alienate true established fans who love that Sundays are for football and that it's America's game.

The downfall of every great empire is that it has gotten too big to maintain...we've already seen baseball and basketball get watered down by having too many teams, and the NFL is dangerously close as it is. Expanding to a European market is stupid.

I won't like it...and I'm a Cowboys fan from NY whose been to one game.

I don't like what it stands for more than I don't like the idea of the game going to Europe.

Agreed. The commish is starting to over step his bounds. I think the owners will reel him in.
