probably not...the team was in position to win games vs the Commanders and Seahawks and didnt because the defense blew it...the kicker wasnt on the field when Santana Moss caught two long tds, nor was he on the field when we let a team with none of their top WR's go 80+ yds to tie the game

David
Cortez missed a makable FG in that game Moss hit his home run against us. The final score should have been 16-14. The Denver game ring a bell? Another game lost because a kicker missed. We could have been 11-5.

so what? whats to say the defense wouldnt have blown those leads too?

come on...13-0 with 4mins or so to go and the other etam hasnt scored a TD in 7+ quarters, and you give up two on the same damn play? and that after they had them in 3rd and 27...also, we were down 14-13 with around a minute and a half or so to go and the ball on the Skins side of the field...guess what, their defense held us without a single first down...they WON the game, whereas our defense LOST the game

and lest you forget, KC missed a gimme fg that would have tied the game too...and to think we had them down to 22 seconds and they had to go the length of the field...guess what, they did

quit blaming the freaking kicker

As usual, late getting in on this topic - my 2 cents. While it was commendable that Pettiti tried his best after being thrown into the starting position, he was not very good at all.
I'm all for keeping him as a back up and yes he will get stronger, fitter, and become a better player.BUT COME ON, A 1st or 2nd round talent should beat out a 6th round talent. If, and I say If, we draft an OT in either 1st or 2nd round which I for one hope we do,that player should go into camp battleing Rob for the starting position, and should win the job.
Now if we also pick up a free agent OT, they can fight it out in camp as well, but Rob does not just get to start again this year, great story and all but we must get better...

The "gimme" FG was over 40 yards lol

and we wouldnt blame the kicker if the kicker wasnt the reason for the problems we had

Here is what Ourlads recently offered on perhaps the 3 top offensive tackles available... The analysis came after watching the players at the Senior Bowl-- both in practice and in the game itself:

D'Brickashaw Ferguson (Virginia)- As good as advertised. Excellent feet in pass protection. Good redirect. Long arms (36 1/4") natural knee bender. Smooth and athletic in his movement. Leaks through on the second level. Sinks his hips. Can turn and seal linebacker and cut off backside pursuit. One of the most fluid natural athletes we've observed in numerous Senior Bowls. Carries his weight well. Needs to fill out and upgrade his overall strength. Competitive blocker with god body control. Has all the tools to be a Pro Bowl player. Needs to post up inside leg better to take away inside slant by defensive end.

Eric Winston (Miami)- Angular left tackle that is more finesse than powerful. Comes off the ball with a flat back. Sustains contact with defender. Not real strong with his anchor. Has some talent and tools. Not an explosive and powerful as you like for a tackle.

Marcus McNeill (Auburn)- A left tackle with natural strength. Explosive. Can generate power. Will duck his head on pass protection and waist bend at times. Needs pass protection technique work. Raw talent.

Jonathan Scott (Texas)- Athletic tackle that needs to play strong. Not a powerful player. Good initial quickness and balance. An inconsistent player in both pass protection and run blocking. Players too high to anchor bull rush. Average long snap at 14 yards was between .70 and .79.

Ryan O'Callaghan (California)- Big physical right tackle type. Good sized hands and arms (33 3/4"). Good balance. Could improve his footwork in pass protection. Not a natural knee bender. Average athletic ability. Can mirror a speed rusher.

Jeremy Trueblood (Boston College)- Typical Boston College lineman. Physical and plays with an attitude. Angular build (6077, 316) with long arms (34") and big hands (10 3/8"). Plays high and allows the defensive end to get into him. Struggles to anchor. Inconsistent to move his feet against a speed rusher.

Other than Ferguson I don't see any instant answers at RT. As a matter of fact I think if one stuck Winston and McNeil at RT for the 2006 season I think each is capable of giving up 10+ sacks as a starter. I still think a year #2 Pettiti is a better option than either McNeil or Winston.
McNeill looks pretty good. He's ten times the athlete of Petitti, better size and strength, and 50 times the talent. Hasnt given up a sack in years, 6'8 and still runs a 5.08 and is athletic.

AND who says either of those OT's selected at #18 would perform any better? At least in year one...
lord knows a 1st rd talent who hasnt given up a sack in years of college, couldnt perform better than a fat lop we got in the 6th round, who was fat out of shape unathletic and weak. no, of course that couldnt happen. all draftees are equal.

Didn't he just have MRIs done? Let the trainers give the thumbs up or down. If the scouts say no, like they did with Rogers than we should pass. If they say he is healthy, McNeil is definitely worth the 18th pick. With is great workout, he might have just shot up his draft stock. Buffalo might draft him to replace Mike Williams.

If we take a OT in the first round I'll snap.

Why? Aren't you tired of the revolving doors at both tackle positions? A talented tackle is not a reach at 18. McNeil will not be there in the second. If Flozell goes down again, our season will be done. We already spent a first and second on the linebackers. Let Burnett start at ILB next year.

no, but I wasnt expecting him to be a human turnstyle either

san Diego started a 7th rd pick as a rookie at RT all of 2004 and their offense wasn eons better than ours...he didnt hold his team hostage with poor play

Pettiti got worse as the yr wore on, far worse...if he was capable of being good he should have improved...I'm sure he is a great guy and he appears to really try hard, but he isnt good enough to be an every game, every yr starter

David

When are you going to lay some blame on the quarterback David?

From 36 sacks to 50 wasn't all the offensive line. ;)

IF, IF, IF, IF, IF, IF...

I wish we could have all-pros backing up all-pros at all positions.

But it ain't going to happen. Roster and cap limitations forbid it.

Right now Adams is guaranteed a roster spot. Petti is probably 90%. That's two spots left over for Tucker, Columbo and Rogers.

And if Fabini or another vet comes in I would almost guarantee they'll have a spot.

That's one spot left.

IF we sign a vet we will not draft a tackle period. A guard? Maybe in rounds 2 or 3... but no tackle.

If Petitti has to start another year and give up the most sacks in the league and help blow our chance at the playoffs etc. I will snap. What is the big deal with fixing our HORRIBLE HORRIBLE Oline? Why are people so opposed to it.

lol ya we all know how bright the future is for Tucker, Columbo and Rogers. They're all garbage. Tucker is even worse than Petitti. Fabini is another old overpaid free agent, something we don't know. When will people learn that expensive past their prime free agents just don't work out that much.

I think we are the only two people on the board that want McNeil with the 18th pick.

Well if Hillary runs for president in '08 and wins I'll snap at that one too! LOL!

But I'm willing to trust Purcells in knowing what to do with the O-line. If he wants to sign a vet like Fabini to play at RT for a year or two I'm OK with it.

If he wants to draft a 1st round OT I'll live with that too.

But right now we have a ton of age and money wrapped up in that o-line. At some point we're going to have to hope that some of the young guys like Petitti, Peterman, Johnson and maybe Rogers can play at this level.

At some point you just have to be patient. The salary cap and limited roster sizes necessitate it.

Also having a quarterback learn how to check-down properly would help too. ;)

Jerry has already said that the preference is to not throw another rookie OT out there... his words, not mine.
