I think if we can get and stay relatively healthy 10-6...we were 8-8 with a terrible defense and a good # of starters out hurt

Seems fair. So assuming we're 10-6, and can stay healthy, is this a SB team?

Awesome, thanks for sharing. I honestly hope you're right, I just wasn't overly impressed. I guess it's one of those situations where you just have to hope that Jerry and Co. know what they're doing.

Yeah, I really hope they were right about the guy. Honestly, I find it encouraging that they had him listed as a first rounder, because for a while now they have been money on their early picks. As long as they don't breach their own protocol and trade up for a guy they didn't spend much time studying (like Claiborne), I feel good about who they target. And they had studied Lawrence a lot.

It isn't just the guys they've picked that have been good, but also the guys who they have liked and tried to target. For instance, they liked T Smith and thought he was the best pick for a team with a terrible OL... but they debated JJ Watt and really liked him as well.

Dez and Sean Lee were correctly scouted by Dallas. Frederick and Williams have been hits out of a draft that was really pretty shallow overall.

From what I've seen of Lawrence I really like too. Another thing that I find encouraging is this: Lawrence timed pretty good in all of his drills at the Combine, and even better at his pro day, but just about every scouting report that I read on him, they all said he plays faster than he times. I have always liked to have that because it indicates the player has football speed, which just about every great player you will ever find plays faster than they timed.

Ealy, on the other hand, had me (and others) wondering about his combine times because he simply doesn't look very fast... which for me is a red flag.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not crazy about Ealy either, but I don't think he offers any less than Lawrence. I really feel like the trade up was more of a desperation pick than a logical pick, and desperation is not something you want to calculate into your drafting decisions. Having watched a lot of Jernigan in college, I honestly think that he's a lot more than your standard 1-tech. I just feel like we have way too many holes to be trading picks away. Here's to hoping that the Lawrence pick turns out to be a great one.

I agree with your opinion 100%. I would have rather for them to have drafted Ealy. If he didn't do well on the weak side, move him to the strong side and draft another DE that fits the weak side next year. Both DE positions would have been upgraded without giving a pick away. Jerry has the ideal in his head that the defense was only a player away from being solid. It is not. He should have been patient and realized the defense will take several drafts to fix.

I applaud you, as someone who invests too much money in this team every year, I wish I shared your optimism.

Thank you,.....The so called "realists" here, and the so called "homers" all know what we have with JJ...it's just trying to have faith that the light will somehow come on...who knows it "could" be this year....having said that, since this IS the team we choose to follow and want the best for, it's how one chooses to view it which is either in a positive or negative light, but the hope for the end result is the same.

Agreed. I said this in another post, but very quietly, the talent level, especially on defense, has risen considerably. And even with all the problems last year, what if the Cowboys won one or two of those losses that came by one point? It's easy to drink the Kool Aid, or eat the cheese, or whatever cliche you prefer this time of year, but I like what I'm seeing too.

Its certainly fresh..

..the old ways wore thin.

I've really tried to have faith in this team, it just doesn't work. I will say though, I recognize that there appears to be a philosophical change taking place at the highest levels of the team, which gives me some faith for the future. Romo and Witten are the last of the guys left from the "old team", hopefully after this season, we can move on from them, and the cycle will be complete.

Good reply and good discussion man. It is nice to see someone who has their own opinion but is open to debate and listening to the other side of the argument. Not just with me, but with others.

Kudos to you. Discussions like this makes this board better for all, and fosters even more intelligent conversations.

Absolutely, good talking to you tonight.

It may not always seem like it, but I'd give anything for this team to get back to the glory days. I have a lot invested in the team, both emotionally and fiscally. At some point, I've got to get a return on my investment.

Yep. Cool posts with both sides well represented by you two. Nice to read a civilized and respectful exchange of opinions while remembering that all of us are rooting for the same team. Nice job again to the both of you guys.

Pretty reasonable until you got to the point where you wanted to make your Jerry bash. I don't wan't to defend Jerry but but there is no way he believes that. So, let's draft a second tier SDE and put him on the weak side and hope he can replace Ware. If he can't, no worries, we'll just try the same thing next year. THEY traded up because they felt like he was the best prospect at WDE and we need a WDE.

I know it's early and I maybe falling in a trap yet again with my beloved Cowboys but their seems to be something different going on with the organization. We are aggressively searching high and low churning this roster looking to add guys who are coming to try out for us who may have been disregarded or given up on. Now I'm not saying this means anything cause we haven't played a game yet but I like the direction we are headed in. We r a young football team we are getting real young on D still remains to be seen if it translates on the field but I like we are being aggressive

Similar threads like this appear every year around this time with FANS getting pumped up for the upcoming season claiming something seems different with the team this year. Yes it's FANS like you falling into the same trap year after year trying to convince yourselves that this season will finally be different. It was either last year or the year before that someone started a thread with a video of Garrett addressing the team prior to training camp. That video got a lot of FANS fired up with many claiming that Garrett sounded different even though he sounded like the same robotic HC we've been hearing ever since he took over as the Cowboys HC in 2010. Before Garrett's speech some said they weren't feeling all that optimistic about the upcoming season but after the speech a few FANS got so juiced up they were predicting 11 to 13 wins with at least one playoff win and one FAN even went so far as predicting the Cowboys would go all the way.

Wish I could find the video of Garrett gushing all over the addition of Monte Kiffin in Jan of 2013. That had one FAN so stoked he predicted the Cowboys would be a top 5 defense in 2013. lol You gotta love Cowboy FANS it doesn't take much to bring them back from the depths of depression after a disappointing mediocre season that was a repeat of the previous disappointing mediocre season to get them thinking SB again once May arrives. The Cowboys have been churning the roster since after the 2010 season. There's very few players still around from that 6-10 team but it's only resulted in 2 more wins in each of the last 3 seasons and not one single playoff appearance.

Adding players who have been given up on by other teams doesn't exactly have me thinking we're heading for a better season in 2014. Adding cheap castoffs is a desperate move by a cap strapped mediocre team looking for help hoping they may uncover some gold while sifting through all the discarded trash. Getting real young doesn't always equate to getting better. To get better you need good young players who show improvement each year unlike players like Morris Claiborne and Bruce Carter who the team was expecting a lot from but who have yet to deliver. I'm not trying to discourage anyone but we won't find out if anything is different with this team until they hit the field in Sept. It's FANS trying to spin something seems different in May that causes so many of them to sound suicidal once the regular season begins when they realize nothing is different.
