Spend. Money. Now.

No offense but to me the most amazing thing about your post here is that 13 people on here liked the idea. What you are proposing is akin to throwing good money at bad money. No reason to double down here and continue to get desperate and screw up the future even more. Its much more prudent to accept the current position and develop a consistent and core strategy to win long term. What you are proposing is the EXACT attitude that has kept us middling since the 90's.

This team is clearly 3 pro bowlers on D, another 3 legitimate starters on D and a very good backup QB away from truly having the capability to be a contender year in and year out. And that would only depend on Romo only missing a few games. The problem long term for the Cowboys goes beyond Jones ability to get those starters on D. But by the time he gets there, if he gets there, Romo wont be much of a viable QB most likely. So then we have to start over there.

1. There really no such thing as "bad money" on a one year deal. Pay Freeney. It goes away next offseason anyway. The Bennett idea requires more careful thought and negotiation.

2. Denver just won a Super Bowl with no offense. New Orleans and Indianapolis won Super Bowls with no defense. Tampa and Baltimore won Super Bowls with no quarterback. There is no exact formula.

I'm not calling Dallas the favorite to win anything but the NFC East, but let's see how this shakes out. The offense looks as good as any in the NFL, so now it's a matter of what young players arrive this season. There is talent on the defensive side, but there are holes to fill for sure.

As far as backup QB, there is no such thing. That's a unicorn. If any of the top tier quarterbacks get lost for the season, their teams are done.

They should have been on the phone with Freeney yesterday.

Benson coming off the knee, Tapper and Russel have a shot to start at the 7 technique for the first few games

Oh I don't deny that they will be in line to get a lot of PT. Just pointing out that rookie DEs don't typically make big impacts.

Significant players? Romo is another year older. Scandrick hasn't played in a year and is a slot corner. Thornton is significant, but Mayowa, Tapper, the Collins, and Jones are all huge wildcards.

In real life Scandrick starts on the outside then moves into the slot on nickel.

Michael Bennett might be soured on signing here due to his brother's experience with the organization.

No thanks on Bennett. Good player .... but too much like his brother. I am worried that he would be just like Marty B. All of the talent in the world, but too much of a me first player who is marginally effective and a bit of a side show distraction.

True, but he only needs to rush the QB and play the run. He doesn't have to read coverages and be on the same page as his QB. Very different dynamic.

A flaky personality is something that smart franchises try to avoid, if at all possible. I think Bennett has adequate talent, but seems to be a bit flaky, which is how I personally view his brother Marty too. Lots of talent, but not someone to build a team around, if it can be avoided.

I know I keep hearing all this stuff from you hopefuls. "backup QB's arent real" "salary cap is a myth" "on paper matters for something" "2014 is similar so it will be similar results" bla bla bla

Denver didn't have a great offense for sure, but they had probably one of the best defenses the NFL has ever seen. New Orleans led the league in turnovers that year. Indy had a good pass rush lead by the guy you are hoping we sign in his prime.

Tampa and Baltimore both had amazing run games to team with an incredible defense.

And most importantly.......EVERY one of those teams mentioned had GREAT coaching.

Then all you have to do is look at the teams that we face in the NFL. Plenty of playoff caliber contenders that have both defense and offense. Arizona, Carolina in the NFC, Seattle. Gotta get past those cats.

The odds look accurate to me. What are they 50-1? Or something. That is about what we are dealing with.

And I dont see much talent on D. Certainly not much young talent and the older guys are either bad or average.

The Broncos won an NFL title last season with 52 sacks, and the average number of sacks by a Super Bowl champion has been 44.

I wonder when we will hear about Jeremy Mincey. What is the status of his elbow? was it his elbow he had surgery on?

They need to sign a mincey type and Freeney is a perfect fit.

Why would I tell you?

Well, I figure if you know Romo's not going to make it through the season you would know who's going to win the Super Bowl and I'm figuring you're a pretty good guy, so you'd hook me up and I can put some cash on it.

Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy.

They should have been on the phone with Freeney yesterday.

Yep and this will absolutely blow you away as to why--

Dwight Freeney had 8 sacks in 317 snaps in 2015
Olivier Vernon had 7.5 sacks in 977 snaps in 2015

We could sign him for pennies considering Vernon's contract with the Giants.
He's just not going to want to go through the grind of camp at his age. I think we'll get him.

Freeney only comes in on 3rd and long but that is what I love about stats, 500 of OV's snaps were runs

Vernon did have 62 other tackles compared to 8 for Freeney

Not against signing Freeney at all

At least one middle of the road vet DE would settle things down a bit...

Excellent point. Thank you for the context.

Brian Billick was a great coach? Gary Kubiak is a great coach? Ron Rivera is a great coach?

Let's wait and see. I'll promise you this...at least one of these young DEs will establish themselves as a guy you think has a great future. Happens all the time. Lawrence will be back. Thornton and Crawford are here. Watch for Damien Wilson, too.

The defense will not be great, but it will be better than the doom and gloom we're hearing.

The time is now while Romo can still play at a high level, and OL is young and good.
they should spend some money now on defense and see if they can make a run this year.
