I know neither of them can cover their noses when they sneeze.

But I need a SS that can bring the wood and force a fumble or get into the backfield for a TFL/Sack/Disruption every now and then.

The Int's and Passes defended are gravy.

The most important role of a safety is pass coverage. If you want to judge safeties, look at pass coverage statistics.

You're bass ackwards here. Today's NFL calls for a safety that can cover first and foremost. "Laying the wood", forcing fumbles, TFL's, Sacks, and disruptions are "gravy". IMO.

Fortunately for Williams, he's not alone in that many of today's strong safeties aren't suited well to four wide receiver sets and other spread offensive formations.

Come on. I am not uneducated here. Roy was not drafted to be a great cover Safety and he is never going to become one. His worth is in him coming up with Sacks, TFL's, FF's and momentum changing hits.

Roy's game is bass ackwards for the NFL today, or at least it was when he was doing those things, but some of you guys are committed to the idea that he will somehow become something he is not.

I am at least willing to overlook his 'weaknesses' if he would get back to providing the things he called his 'strengths' just a few seasons ago.

You're damn straight on that. Pat Kirwan got it right with the article I just posted in the Roy Myth thread. He's on the money. Defensive coordinators are finding it a difficult task to find ways to utilize these box safeties strengths.

When Roy came into the league it was still a balanced offense time. Now the Pass is clearly dominant and you must have safeties that can cover better then in the past. Roy is not that and never will be. I frankly can see coming down the road a time when you are starting 3 CBs and 1 S.
