Lookit, the definition I'm using is commonly used here and elsewhere in the sports world. I have no idea why you haven't ever seen it used as such. A player wins a position "by default" if he has no real competition for that position. Pettiti won his position last year "by default". Same with Polite. Sure there were some people to compete or guys we could have brought in to compete but they were "guys off the street" who weren't real competition.summerisfunner said:dude, the definition I have highlighted is used in reference to the participants in a team sport, is football not a team sport? I gave you the dictionary's definition, and also the definition as how it's applied to football, a person's main competition for a position being unable to thoroughly compete with him, in order to win the job due to injury, suspension, etc., what you gave me was a misunderstanding of the phrase, "by default", it does not mean he was the only qualified candidate for the FS position, your definition, which is wrong, and has been proven by the definition, and there is only one definition for a word, so for the last time, don't fault Davis for the Cowboy's inability to find a better FS alternative, so Davis won the FS job, by performance, NOT default, last year, this year may be a different story, but who knows? that's why they play the game
You can disagree with this definition. You can claim it doesn't exist and that no one ever uses it this way. BUT, I would strongly caution you against doing so, as it would make you appear less credible.
