I think it’s about 5 million guaranteed more. No RB is getting major guaranteed money 8 years into their contract.

yeah that was off the cuff. Thought zeke got 50 and gurley got 47.5 or something. But the overall point remains. Couple million more for two additional years good proposition

Good point. Imagine how good this would have looked if Jerry’s verbal drama never happened.
Im thinking jerrys drama never would have happened if Zeke reported to camp showed some loyalty and asked for the money . Jerry has a track record of being very fair . If for some reason Zeke didnt get it he could have held out then instead of strong arming Jerry

Jonesare handing out extensions on unexpired contracts before the team has even made a conference championship game. This aint the 90s, I guess.

Right. I think I have understood the Jones DNA for a long time. They make winning a championship unnecessarily difficult. That’s not even arguable anymore.

You’re missing the point. Of course the Cowboys wanted Zeke. They just didn’t want to sign him to this particular deal, at this particular time… And for that much guaranteed. They had two more years on his contract… And then franchise tag options. Zeke basically said “it’s not going to go down like that”.

Then Jerry tried to sell everybody the notion that it is going to go down like that... but then ultimately tucked his tail between his legs and gave in to Zeke. Jerry showed nothing of this “backbone” that he was talking about

We don't know exactly how this contract breaks down.

When it became apparent Zeke was holding out at the beginning of training camp this summer, Stephen Jones famously declared, “We’re not going to set the market.”

Jerry made chest thumping declarations implying opposition to Zeke’s contract position. Remember “Zeke Who”? Remember his long winded wandering defiant answers at Jaylon Smith’s contract extension press conference? Or his calls to a Dallas radio station?

I don’t have a problem with Zeke’s contract. Glad he’s getting paid. My problem is with the frequent and distracting mouth running of our front office. The Jones boys love to talk. But in the end, they don’t say much that ends up being true.
I don't have to. If they're gonna talk I'd rather they not publicize the team's plans.

This thread is about Jerry and Stephen talking too much in public. If they had kept mostly tight lipped and not turned this Zeke negotiation into a WWF wrestling event, today they would appear to be much more competent as football front office gurus. Instead of looking like Vince McMahon and family.

Yeah… They do not know how to get out of their own way.

Yep, you were off a tad bit on the guaranteed money. Gurley was 45 million. Bell also held out for guaranteed money as well. Honestly, how much could Gurley get on a guaranteed deal at the 8th year of his career?

At this pace anyways, Zeke isn’t going to last. Gurley has the injury, but in the offense he plays in, if he didn’t have the health issues, odds are in his favor to continue longer than Zeke.

It all comes down to guaranteed money.

If you're expecting the Jones boys to shut up and not talk, you're setting yourself up for anger and frustration. It simply comes with the territory, you take the good and the bad when it comes to those two.

yep similar to expecting them to hire a coach that can make the best use of all this talent we have and the short window we have it for

"Jerry Jones basically says Jason Garrett needs huge results to keep his job"

"You can win the Super Bowl without a star rushing champion.."

No I don't believe a single thing the Jones boys say. It's all to keep the team in the news and the money rolling in.

First lesson, take what ANYONE says with a grain of salt. And if fans wouldn't hang on every word life would be much less stressful.
Seriously, who cares what anyone says? Nothing is written in stone and whether or not they stick to their "word" is irrelevant.
finally words of wisdom

people dont understand posturing, negotiating, diplomacy and all such concepts. It isnt just sports and it certainly isnt just Jerry

I think even that criticism (and a valid one) is now changing as well.

They clearly love Jason Garrett the person, but even they can't and won't ignore a failure to produce results any longer.

The Cowboys generally sign guys at below their value, so i have no problem with them talking. Also it is kinda their team. This was a fair deal for both parties, they both saved face.

This was not a fair deal.

They are paying one of the most fungible positions in the NFL the largest contract ever seen for that position.

They caved. Remember how good you feel about this when we have to skimp in defense and let guys like Jones and M Collins and others walk.

Deals are about guaranteed money in the NFL. Why is this so hard to grasp for some? Bell got 25 in fully guaranteed money. The Steelers offered Bell 5 years at 70, but only 10 million was guaranteed. If the 50 million of Zeke is FULLY guaranteed and not a rolling guarantee, that’s a great move on his part.

The fact it’s six years, as opposed to 4 or 5, is ultimately irrelevant to Zeke.

Zeke is also a top 5 seller of jerseys and Jones gets the merchandising numbers per the exclusive agreement Jerry Jones worked with the NFL.

Jimmy Johnson was performing the duties of the GM when we won 2 of those 3 super bowls and he had the last word in all football matters per his contract. The 3rd Super Bowl was won with the team Jimmy built and was won by a coach on autopilot with Jimmys roster.

After the 3rd Jimmy-built Super Bowl was won, Jerry began to take over in earnest, every facet of the team, football issues esp. Jerry's legacy is that of an owner who has tried to win a div playoff game for the past 24 seasons and failed. Jerry gets credit for hiring Jimmy, letting Jimmy have the last word with everything football related, and writing checks. Once Jimmys talent got old and splintered by free agency, Jerry was unable to even win consequetive playoff games with 24 seasons to experiment with.

So here we are 24 years later with what most sportswriters consider to be a championship roster, and odds are, we will fail to win consequetive playoff games again if we even make the playoffs at all. Why? Because Jerry refuses to give us an elite coaching staff, the Jones cartel country club atmosphere, constant Jones boys' radio and tv interviews to provide constant distractions, and the contract distractions that could have been settled out of the public eye way before training camp started.

We must overcome all these factors to try to win consequetive playoff games.

There are no excuses for our team this season. But the Jones boys already have the excuses machine ready to justify another season without a deep playoff run. 24 seasons will make even the best Cowboy fan skeptical. Respect is earned, which is why the national media never respects us. Making a deep playoff run is the only remedy for gaining respect.

"Hope is not a strategy" - Dan McDowell
Ya,& I've tried telling our Football Dad to just go back to being the Team's owner that just signs the checks, that'll ultimately bring him the recognition required,,, er,,, while him still being the one holding onto the true Rein's of power( thru terminating those whose not getting it done)

Jerry hired this coach. 10 years here and 2 playoff wins. It's time to finally see if the coach in training has finally graduated.

I think after 10 yrs we know exactly what we have in Garrett, fortunately, Zeke and a healthy top 5 Oline remove him from the equation most of the time .

IMO 3 things will prove if this team has graduated . A talented defense capable of getting some TOs especially in the post season . Dak and Gallup turning last yrs missed opportunities into this yrs game breakers

Last and most important can Kellen Moore out coach the best in the business come playoff time . Between Dak , the D and Moore a handful of well executed plays in big moments will be the difference in us advancing or making a quick exit

The question I have is how much is guaranteed. 6 years/$90 million doesn't tell the whole story.

50MM.

It’s absurd. Jerry likes and pays for flashy things without any long term vision.

That's fine, running backs have a short career compared to a lot of quarterbacks, offensive linemen, etc. If I was in Zeke's shoes I'd be mostly concerned with that, too...
