I never understand why people want to exclude big plays in calculating averages, whether it's Newman on punt returns or Barry Sanders on carrying the ball.

But with punt returners in particular, you're exactly right: Even the best ones have many, many returns that basically go for nothing. The ones with the best average are almost always the ones with the most long returns; that's what separates them.
You have a point, but it's not like Newman was breaking off a bunch of 20+ either. So far, Newman is an average punt returner.

And do we really want to expose our #1 cornerback to injury for 'average punt returns'?

I don't.

Granted Newman is not Deion Sanders in the return game but did you mind it when he was sent out on the field to return punts in big game or big situations?

Actually, I did.

And to be honest, I wasn't crazy about it even when Deion was giving the team much better results.

I subscribe to having a 'lesser player' do it.

I could not do that. End up losing a game knowing I did not put my most effective player on the field. Granted my hope is someone like Stanback comes in and shows he is the best option on returns but if not and we were in need of a big play out of the return team I would have to go with who ever the best guy was on the team

I have to agree with that opinion. Every time Sanders or Newman did/has lined up to field kicks, I've always held my breath until the end of the play. Injury is constantly in the back of my mind. Both players were/are more dangerous returners, though.

Hurd, Elam and Fowler had more special team tackles than Keith Davis. As a matter of fact Davis had 13 more total tackles than Elam, despite Elam not playing a down on the regular defense.

Davis was nothing more than a Parcells' favorite. He kept saying how good a ST player he was, but no one ever saw it on the field.

We should have let him go to NO last year. I think he was kept last year because Parcells thought Payton was showing him up by signing Davis as a restricted FA.

fair enough, I just think Davis' worth on special teams is more than a player who may not contribute much of anything

btw, didn't Davis lead the team in special teams tackles in '05?

Other than Sehorn, I have seen very few major injuries by a return guy. This is constantly brought up, but rarely happens. If he blows an achilles while playing CB, will we say it was cause he returned a kick that day?? I hope not, lol.

So far, Newman is just an average return man, like Woody said. So I guess it doesn't matter if he is back there or not, although I have wanted him back there, he really hasn't done anything while back there anyway. Love to see us have a real return guy, but we still don't appear to have that guy on the roster.

I think Keith Davis might also be cut. Elam is better and cheaper than Davis.

Yeah so do I

Newman's number for 2006

202/20 = 10.1

Remove the 1 PR for 56 yards and you get

146/19 = 7.68

Which is very Patrick Craytonish and middle of the pack aka average.

Watch this one.

Best PR in the league last year was Devin Hester.

He went 47-600 for a 12.8 average. You take out his 3 TDs and hes at 44-388 for an 8.8 yard average. Just a bit better than Crayton.

I remember seeing similar things on Dante Hall when he was tearing it up, too.

Funny, but I seem to remember several very good returns by Newman that got wiped out by penalty in 2005. Seemed like every time he had a good one, it would get called back. And like always, sometimes the illegal block or hold was far away from the play.

You'll see that for any PR -- KR are a bit different because you don't get the massive hangtime.

The main point is that a good PR can't really be measured by YPC -- he's measured by those handful of gamebreaking returns over a season and his judgment in terms of taking FCs, letting balls drop, etc.

Return guys especially punt return guys are much like running backs. They need more touches to get into the flow. If you go out and return one punt and then someone else returns the next, then how do you get into a rhythm? Then the next game it is two different people doing the job. I would much rather it be one guy full time even if it is one guy who isn't going to be a game breaker. I like Newman returning punts, but if it is only part time I don't see that as a great benefit. If that is the case I would rather see Crayton back on every punt.

Just a few comments.

Miles Austin - I can see him getting cut, he didn't get any snaps and all he could do was return kicks as a back up to Tyson Thompson.

Tyson Thompson - I think he stays since he can play RB and return kicks.

MacQuistern (sp) - I hope his band wagon breaks down for good. People like him and are trying to find him a spot, so I think he is gone.

Keith Davis - He demands more than one person blocking him on special team, plus he is RW backup, he stays.

Hurd - Knows all the WR positions, played in a few games and contributes (I think he started one game when TG was injured). Made a lot of special teams tackles. Keeper.

Glenn - proven to be much better than either of our backups. He makes a excellent corner in a nickle and he can start in a pinch. I was nervous until the first game against SD when he came up big.

If Ware doesn't show something other than a speed rush and/or a bull rush, I can see him being cut to save cap money.
