Switzer probably not playing Saturday

So how does Ryan Switzer make the roster when he's done absolutely nothing to earn it?

Welcome to the problem around here.

I don't think you're being realistic at all. For starters, the coaches saw him in mini camp, so he has done something. And while some 4th round picks do get released, I don't think any team cuts a guy in his rookie season just because a hamstring has stopped him from playing in the preseason.

Why can't they go on PUP? Rookies aren't eligible ?

It has nothing to do with them being rookies. Once you start practicing in training camp, you can't then be put on PUP. McFadden last year was eligible for PUP because he was placed on it before camp started and stayed on it until he was healthy later in the season. Durant was on PUP to start camp but has since been activated.

Lewis and Switzer are not eligible to be put on PUP. They would have to go on IR with the option to return but no way you use those two exceptions before the season even starts. They will be on the 53 for sure. If Switzer is healthy, there's no reason he can't return punts against the Giants. That doesn't require a ton of reps. It's instincts and natural ability. I don't know that he would play a big part in the offense to start the season anyway but he can be worked in as the season progresses.

Lewis may be inactive to start the season because they can't take 6 corners to the game anyway. It's a long season though and they will need him. Injuries will happen and Lewis and Awuzie will get their chances to play regularly. I don't think Carroll is an entrenched starter by any means and the Cowboys play a ton of nickel and dime defense.

Yep. Pretty much exactly. I'm not sure what we were supposed to get worked up about, anyway. The guy's had a hamstring injury. That's not something you just power through because you're tough. That leads to constant recurrence. Which leads to threads about cutting guys because they're always injured.

I'd like to see him, since it would be fun to watch, but generally don't care if we're holding a guy out over concern about his hamstring. Given our track record for finding and developing offensive starters and key role players in Dallas over recent years, it makes no sense to get butthurt over stuff like this.

We went through the same cycle of complaints last season when Elliott only had a half dozen snaps or whatever. Right before he went on to league the entire league in rushing.

If these are the problems around here, I'd love some problems on defense. The real problem isn't with how we evaluate the talent we do have. It's with not having enough good players on that side of the ball in the first place.

Cowboy fans love butthurt.

He was practicing Wednesday (8/23), I saw him out there. Maybe he had a set back, not sure otherwise.

I watched Lance Lenoir fielding punts on Tuesday (8/22) and it was frightening. One drop (maybe two) and he had several he had to re-catch. Switzer on Wednesday was smooth and natural catching punts and running with the ball. Switzer has skills, don't give up on that kid.

Just read on the official website that Switzer did practice this week, but didn't get enough reps in to play Saturday. Bryan Broaddus said Switzer looked good and had burst.

To me, Switzer is probably going to play a lot in the last preseason game. I just hope that's enough to knock the rust off before the Giants game.

He just needs to spend a lot of time catching punts because that all he will do if active in game 1.

It wasn't so long ago, if my memory serves, that Switzer was the wonder boy of our preseason practices. He's not going anywhere. He'll be put to good use when the time is right. Hamstring woes are nothing to mess with. He'll probably do very well whenever he's well.
