Talking Cowboys 3.14 (Romo)

There were no credible sources saying Cowboys were going to release Romo.

Mickey says there are 3 sides playing poker, Cowboys, Romo, and interested teams. And says Romo is stirring the pot from both sides. Says Romo goodbye speech was suggesting he had some place to go but views this as trying to drum up interest for himself.

Rob says he think Romo would rather retire then be Daks backup.

Speaking to Jerry on the bus at the combine, never got the feeling he was going to release Romo at the start of FA.

Jerry Quote on Romo situation at the combine
"We are in a situation in indy where we need to see some things happen. We need to read some tea leaves. We dont need to be overtly doing something, We dont need to that for cap room, we dont need to do that for anything."

He said back then that march 9th was never a self imposed deadline for Romo but nobody listened.

He's not going to start in Dallas.

Theres no hurry to get anything done with Romo.

Listen to what Jerry is saying, because when they mention sources, Jerry is usually the source.

Romo is not retiring. Think its easy to write a check back to the Cowboys for 10million Dollars?

Team seems to want kellen Moore on the Team because even SJ said we see us having Moore and Vet or Moore and a Rookie.

Like or not this is good business Dallas is doing.

Well if we stand our ground and stick with that narrative long enough we may just make Houston or Denver believe us. I think at the end of the day GMs believe Jerry will release Romo EVENTUALLY, but if we are lucky someone will flench and make us an offer. Maybe an njury or a draft that doesnt fall thier way, or they just wake up on that side of the bed. If I'm Houston I offer a 5th or a 4th if Romo agrees to renegotiate his contract. Any team that is a legitimate contender minus a QB would be wise to do so while also acquiring some young talent to learn behind him.

With the amount of draft busts in the mid to later rounds it amazes me the value that teams put on these picks some times. I realize as a whole you need your picks for young talent and cap reasons but when you consider the probability that 5th rounder could be a bust it seems like a no brainer to take a shot on Romo. At the very least you will energizer the fan base and make alot of money.

Yeah, This is the 1st time I've ever heard Mickey calling out Romo. Mick is Team Dak all the way and said where else would a old backup go to start? If you're not all about being a Cowboy Mickey will trash you on the way out.
Which is strange because he was pro-Romo all season long...even leading up to the playoff game. He was even opposed to seeing what Romo had to offer in the final game against the Eagles because he wanted him fresh for the playoff game...because he didn't need to see anything out of Romo. He knew that Tony would be playing at a Pro-bowl level.

Fast forward to yesterday, and you're right. He's ripped off his #9 jersey, Hulkamania-style, and acted like Romo was chopped liver. "Who's going to sign him?" "Where's he going to start?". Really, Mick? Have you watched any other teams besides Dallas? You really think Tony is going to allow himself to be relegated to a back-up behind Dak?

At least Broaddus will admit when he's wrong. Sorry for the rant, folks. I've always had, and expressed, my disdain for everything Mickey Spags.

Gee, how has any team ever had any player at any position compete?

With this kind of thinking, Matt Flynn would have been the starter in Seattle.

It's a loser mentality. If the Cowboys don't favor competition and like to just grant jobs to players before the offseason even begins, then it's not a surprise that they haven't been to a Championship game in over 20 years.

I think the argument can be made that it is about more than a camp competition. It is about the things camp doesnt show. What Dak can do with his legs for example is not highlighted during camp. The high percentage chance that Romo will again miss time and the team will have to respond to another QB and his strengths, weakness, tendencies and so on. You also have to factor in Romo as a progress stopper and realize Dak is ready and will likely grow and improve with experience. He can not gain that experience by sitting behind Romo. I completely understand your point on competition but I also believe there is more to it than what these guys can do in shorts.

I was cringing through the first 10 minutes of that episode listening to Spags trying to set-up counter arguments to arguments that weren't even being made. He's such a little rodent.

"And that's my point!" - Mickey "Shill Daddy" Spagnola
For once, I'd love for Rob to say: "No, Mick. You have no point."

That's every episode. I don't know that he's a shill, but Mickey loves arguing against strawmen. There have been times when he and Rob are saying the same exact thing, but Mickey will go on and on like they're not, just so he can argue over nothing.

Romo is one of the best QBs to not win a SB, now I just want a QB that will win the SB. I like our chances with Dak.

Go Cowboys! :flagwave:

Plus it's not like saving the cap space means we become players in free agency.

This. Who cares hire much cap space we have? The front office has made it very clear they aren't going to "overpay", and since almost by definition big FA agent signings are overpaying, they don't need the cap space.

There's plenty to pay Zack.

Oh, I know. Mickey can't actually handle a real 2-way discussion...just doesn't compute. He doesn't feel comfortable unless his "point" comes across in an argumentative form. This latest one about Romo just got my goat. He's been shilling for Romo all season long and now wants everyone to believe that another team doesn't want him and that he'd be "lucky" to stay with Dallas as a QB2.

If I didn't know better (and maybe I don't), I'm almost inclined to believe that Jerry gave him a gameplan of tossing out "Dallas wants to keep Romo" chum.

"I understand that"- Mickey Spags

If Tony goes to a contender, and if he stays healthy, I expect them to compete for the Super Bowl prior to the Cowboys.

Garrett is the stink in this whole scenario with Romo. There was absolutely no reason not to give Tony the shot last year when he was healthy being the best QB on the roster. Dak is the future 12-15 years so it's not like time was running out for him.

He's an average coach and I don't expect him to be here in two years.

Jason is like a cockroach. He will find a way to be here.

Just hold a QB competition this offseason and let the best player win. I think Romo wins it, but I'm not sure how many games he would end up starting due to his age and recent injuries. I think Dak would handle being Romo's backup fine.
Competition without full speed hits is pointless. Lots of guys look good in shorts and helmets.

The start of the thread was Romo would win the job in competition. I said where would the competition be? In practice where the defense doesn't hit, or in preseason where the defense is vanilla. Until Romo CAN prove he can take a hit, there is no competition to begin with.
Try and keep up..................
So AGAIN why practice? Shall we have the magic eight ball decide?. EVERY football player is one hit away. Seriously.....This is like baby-sitting my sister.

I actually think it's stupid to release or trade him. Wake up people (not directed at you SL50, just in general). You have a rookie 4th round comp pick that took the league by storm. RG3 was figured out after he looked like he was going to have this division in his back pocket the next 10 years. I am not saying that Dak is the next RG3, I actually feel that Dak has an amazing future ahead and he is the real deal but it doesn't hurt to have insurance. I think Romo needs to stay on at least half of this season so that Dak can ensure this ball club that he is the real deal. Your not going to get a decent backup QB with a second round pick anyways so why not just wait and see.

Dak is not a rookie. He is a returning vet that guided his team to a 13-3 record. He showed enough he can handle a full load.

RG3 showed signs of trouble with how he played. No one was surprised he got hurt.

Dak's time is now. Let Romo leave and play for another team.

He probably did. Or he knew Tony's side was going to do the video to try to drum up early interest.

Honestly, I can't figure out what the Texans are doing. They're the one's who look silly right now. Jettisoning the bad QB from last season--with a pick--and then trying to sit tight with Tom Savage. Nobody believes that's your plan, guys. If you really want to wait until May or later to get your guy, go for it. Let's hope for your sake no other good teams end up wanting to make a deal. Because there's nobody on the market remotely near Tony's level of ability out there.

They should be counting themselves fortunate he's a legitimate option and just lock him up. It won't take much for Denver to blink, or for a team nobody expects, like Jacksonville, to step up to the plate. Sooner or later, somebody's going to make a move for him.
No no no. See Dallas is the villain here. Houston needs a QB. Dallas has two. And Houston really wants one. But they don't want to pay for it. I mean how ridiculous to think Dallas should get something for the asset. Obviously Dallas should just give him away. Just like Houston gave us Watt when they had an extra pass rusher lying around.

This is the position of most NFL fans, the guys on the Ticket, Jesse Holley, Ben & Skin, and the Fan. Sometimes I feel like I'm going insane when this kind of stuff passes for logic.
