Guys AP has been telling folks in Houston (offseason home) for weeks he's coming to Dallas. Trust me, Jerry has made it clear to AP this can only be done with a discount. AP has businesses, ranchs, livestock in the state. He is set post career, his main focus is winning and getting closer to home..

This is some interesting information. Where have you heard or seen it?

He will be released. No one is going to trade for him when they know he will be released. If he truly would like to play in Dallas, and another team wants to jump in and trade for him to beat us to the punch, they would have to be willing to pay the rest of his contract and no one will do that either. So if a trade with anyone gets done, it will have to come with a new contract agreement from AP.

Peterson is a freak. I worry about his age. If we are getting the AP from two years ago, I'm all in. I don't want to pay 13 million this year though. However, I'm still drafting someone. Randle should be cut and replaced with another capable back. Peterson only getting older and has had a few seasons where he got hurt and had to hang his cleats up.

Same here. I'm interested only if he proves he really wants to be a Cowboy by taking a modest (for him) short term deal.

There's a chance the Cowboys could get a much better player at a lower cost for less years. It's a no brainer to me if it's possible.

I see it as more than merely a possibility. In my opinion, it's a probability.

I believe that Murray will absolutely maximize his earnings potential, and that means going to the highest bidder.

And I see a tidal wave of momentum pointing to that team being the Indianapolis Colts. They're freeing up a ton of money to be very aggressive in free agency and running back looks to be a big weakness. I see Murray taking that big money and telling himself that he's the missing piece to a championship there as they did make it to the AFC Championship Game.

That opens up the starting running back position for the Dallas Cowboys:

1) The league's highest profile team
2) Coming off a 12-4 season
3) Top 5 Quarterback
4) Top 5 Wide Receiver
5) Top 5 offense
6) Arguably the league's best young offensive line

Oh, and did I mention they play in Texas?

I'm interested to see what your definition of 'modest' is?

I believe that the numbers will come in at 3-4 years between $15 - $20 million with a lot of back end funny money thrown in to make it look bigger than it truly is.

That would fit as modest to me, stash. That would be the absolute maximum length I'd go in years.

Suffice it to say, nobody knows where AP is likely to wind up in the event Minnesota isn't destined to be his team next season. If Dallas pays him the type of contract that he's likely to command, their salary structure would certainly be tested well beyond its limits to retain the vet free agents they want badly to re-sign. There are other teams infinitely more suited to paying AP what his talents command and in the end, money talks.

We would be just downright disrespectful to Murray. He's 27 and we rode him like a mule to the playoffs and then we toss him aside to pick up a 30 year old who hasn't played in over a year. AD is an all time great back. But he isn't invincible. What's the guarantee that he's in top form this season? Why can't the Cowboys pony up and pay Murray 6mil/yr (no more than that).

Everyone seems to think if he becomes available, this is a done deal.
I'm with you. Maybe Jerry would do it, but this would seem out of character for Garrett. And I think in the last 3 years he gotten increased say in who we bring in and let go.

Also, all this "Texas tie" stuff....I think some forget that AP was Texas' top recruit and he said he was going to Oklahoma because they were winners and the Texas teams were losers.

One of the all-time disses to the state of of Texas and UT at the time--or at least perceived that way.

He's also the same guy who said the NFL is the same as modern day slavery.

He is signed through 2017. He counts %15.4 M this year. $15 M next year and $17 M in 17.

Those final two years don't count as far as guaranteed money goes. It's all base salary.

The only guaranteed money Peterson has left is $2.4 million (prorated signing bonus). June 1 cuts only help with dead money, so the Vikings save $13 million either way since only the 2014 guaranteed money (that $2.4 million) hits the cap if he's cut before June or after June.

Again, that's my understanding of it, but I'm not a cap expert so I could be wrong. Everything I read about June 1 cuts, though, says the purpose is to keep the remaining years of the dead (guaranteed) money from hitting the cap that year and spread it over multiple years.

Regardless of guaranteed money left, he counts $15.4 M against their cap this year. If they cut him prior to June 1st it will save them $2.4 M. If they cut him after June 1st it will save them $13 M.

I am no cap expert either, by any wild stretch of the imagination. But I've been watching this situation closely because I think it is going to affect the Cowboys. Whether it is by acquiring him, or as a negotiating point to get a better deal with Murray, it affects the Cowboys.

I don't want him at that price and his age. However, I am not against him coming completely. It is very hard for me to ignore how freaking good this guy is, and behind this line, with a year off and a chip on his shoulder, playing for the team he grew up loving and dreaming of playing for...it could be magical. I can't deny that. He is not my first choice, and probably not my second choice either. The Salary Cap era has jaded me towards huge contracts for RBs. I am probably wrong to think that way, but at least I am honest about my bias.

I do not think Dallas would trade for him. I absolutely can see Minnesota cutting him and us trying to get a hometown deal done.

How did it kill us? We scored on the very next possession. In great part due to Murray.

Seriously? The Cowboys had the game in hand at that point and if Murray had scored there instead of fumbling, it's effectively over and never gets to the worst call in NFL playoff history.

See, at that price, I am thrilled to take a chance on AP and wave goodbye to Murray. Love Murray, but it's business, and that is good business.

That's what I see it coming to. The Colts are clearing the decks to free up a ton of money and I think Grigson and Co throw a bunch at Murray to deflect the embarrassment of the Richardson trade.

Then Indy can tout that they've signed "the NFL's leading rusher" while they shove the other guy out the door.

Peterson will see the perfect opportunity to 'come home', get a fresh start, and play for a much better team.

He might at that. This scenario is good, but I think we need to consider the depth of the RB class too. Way too deep for these guys to be Free Agents. IMO.

I think Dallas will let Murray test the market for that very reason. They know they have options. Maybe Peterson will end up as one of those options.

I feel that Dallas has no choice but to let Murray test the market. He's not taking that $4 million per year deal they've offered, and it's way too expensive to tag him for one year. And they have plenty of options should he leave for greener pastures.
