Man, I’m surprised you view it that way. Those two draft picks combined would only have the trade value of getting a little further up in the 5th round. Not to mention that when a pick is a year away, it is valued at about a round lower than it actually is, so this year that 2024 6th is only worth a 2023 7th. In the NFL, those picks hold very little value. If they held much value, you’d see teams trading back for more 5th and 6th round picks.

The hit rate for the 5th, 6th, 7th rounds is tiny. Those picks rarely hit like with Bland in the 5th. Teams just try to do it with numbers, which is why they always try for so many un-drafted free agents.

Anyway, You are actually the only place I’ve heard say that Houston got the better of this trade. Most are giving Dallas the edge by a wide margin.

Here, CBS gives Dallas an A grade and the Texans a D+, which is a pretty good representation of how the trade is viewed around the league.

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft...iants-trade-down-in-post-free-agency-edition/

Here is what they say about it:
——————————-

Cowboys: A

This is the latest move in what has been a savvy offseason for Dallas. Cooks is a player that they've been eyeing dating back to the trade deadline this past season and now get him for a song. Not only do the Cowboys only give up a pair of Day 3 draft selections over the next two seasons, they also have the Texans paying $6 million of Cooks' contract for the 2023 season. Cooks is an ideal speed threat who will complement CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup in Dallas' offense. The 29-year-old receiver has been able to put up numbers over the course of his career even when he was given inconsistent play at the quarterback position, so pairing him in a Cowboys offense with Dak Prescott could bring with it a very high ceiling.

Texans: D+

It became pretty clear that Cooks no longer wanted to a part of the Texans organization, so it's admittedly difficult to try and maximize a return. While the Day 3 draft picks over the next few years are glorified lottery tickets, the more egregious aspect of this trade from Houston's perspective is the team paying over a quarter of his salary for next season. That's an unneeded expense for a rebuilding team that needs as much capital as it can get to surround whoever their rookie QB will be with talent. Speaking of that, the Texans are pretty thin at the position going forward as they roll out Robert Woods, Nico Collins and John Metchie III.
I only trust @AsthmaField and only for his history, nothing else.
Only and that's the facts, Jack.

I respect @xwalker , but I trust @AsthmaField and I know how he'll respond:
It will be him humbly saying he's only as right as he can and he's not always right and yada yada yada...

Dude's a savant.

And one of the best peeps here period.
Just a great poster. One of the best.

This is the one that I wanted, but I thought the compensation and contract would be too much. I mean, he had almost 700 yards last season playing in 13 games and 1,000-yard seasons the previous two with 90 catches and 82 catches. He's been pretty prolific and generally healthy.

Cooks is a wr so idk what u mean bout rbs
Derp. Guess you have a short memory.

You replied to my post where I said this has been a better off-season than recent memory and I said the only move I didn't like was franchising Pollard. You said it was so they could work out a long-term deal. Since they are paying him so much on the tag, the expectation is that he will get a contract nearing the franchise amount long term. We have been there and done that. Why do it again?

There are RBs like Sanders, Montgomery, and Williams signing very friendly deals. Heck, I think it would have been better to let him go to free agency and find his value and see if Dallas wants to pay it. We know nobody is going to make him an offer with a franchise tag. I am not even sure if they used the exclusive tag on him.

None of us are perfect. Especially on a message board.
I'd give Latin a certain amount of... whatever you allow.
And your point is well taken and, in my opinion, correct.

Cooks is a JAG.....what has he done in the last 5 yrs.....I could be wrong..and probably am.....but TY Hilton and Cooks are on PAR with each other....Give my TY..he still has the speed
Hilton hasn't had a 1,000-yard season since 2018. Cooks had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2020 and 2021 and probably would have had one last year if he had not missed four games. He's also finished with 80-plus catches in three out of the last five seasons. Hilton last had 80-plus catches in 2016.

Yes, I think he makes a lot of great posts and I enjoy reading him. Thought it was weird that he poo poo'd me on a post he had already commented on. That's all. Sorry if I came across like an awesome person.

This deal is fine, especially because I think they'll take another WR in this draft and ultimately have enough guys to compete for roster spots. I like it especially if T.Y. Hilton also comes back and they draft a guy.
It looks like a one year deal.

Cooks will be the #2 or #3 option with Lamb and Gallup already on the roster. Not sure what people were expecting.
He's a better receiver than Gallup.
You can’t be serious lol. This has to be a joke. Y’all didn’t care how old D Hop and ODB were but Cooks who is 29 and will turn 30 during the season is too old to be a number 3 receiver?
I've got to assume the main reason some fans are mad is simply because they didn't get the receiver they wanted. Cooks has been very, very good everywhere he's been and he's not showing signs of slowing down as far as production goes.

I don't see us taking a receiver, at least not early, now or bringing Hilton back. We spent a third-round pick on Tolbert and this gives us a chance to see if he, or Houston or Fehoko, can take a step forward and make Cooks expendable after one year. Our top three of Lamb, Cooks and Gallup is pretty solid.

You know what I like about this move? It's great for McCarthy's new offense, and for competing with the 9ers and Eagles...

If anything, this should show you that the medium-sized WRs can produce.

I'm now seriously wondering how much of McCarthy's West Coast offense is about to happen.
Quick underneaths... short passes..

I don't know what happened with this quote, but @Fla Cowpoke :

It's a trash move. Cooks is a jag. If he signed with the eagles or giants I wouldn't care at all.....or got traded i should say. by the way it now cost us more in draft picks and money to replace Cooper and we still haven't touched what he brought to the table.
Need to pin this “opinion” for later.

Why do people keep saying go get a tight end they have Mckeon, Ferguson and Hendershot and just drafted Ferguson....
I doubt any one of them offers the level of talent that this team requires to go deep into the playoffs. There will be TEs available to us this year that should be capable of affording assistance to fulfill that purpose. I hope to see us draft one this year offering us elite potential.
