Hoping someone can answer a question for me, the final standings in the American league were

1. Yankees
2. Rangers
3. Detriot
4. Tampa Bay (WC)

I would have expected to see the first round match-ups to be:

Yankees(1) vs Tampa Bay(4) and the Rangers(2) vs Detroit(3)

Why did it go 1 vs 3 and 2 vs 4?
