The danger of losing Miles Austin

nobody will give up a #1 for him.

Yeah just like no one would ever offer up a 1 and 3 and possibly 2 #1 for Ocho Headache last year...oh, wait...

In this league I'm shocked by nothing anymore. I wouldn't be in the least bit shocked if someone gave up that tender for him. They probably shouldn't, smart teams wouldn't, but again I'm shocked by nothing in this league anymore.

why sign someone to a tender, when you can just wait a year and get him for no draft-pick compensation

I know we're used to having Jerry Jones as a GM, but most teams don't have that impulsive owner

so Austin would get all that money and only see about 20 passes thrown his way

i never said anyone would.....i merely said i would be happy with the draft pick we get in return

Point well taken. Though it does happen. Generally with much more established players, for sure, but it happens.

Just last year the Vikes gave up a 1 and a 3, I believe, to get Allen. A few years back the Bucs gave up a 1 and a 3 to get that dude from New Orleans, his name escapes me at the moment.

It all depends on need and if someone values a player, at that position, highly enough to go ahead and grab him now, rather than hope that next year he'll be available.

Because he's 24 and the lead WR is 35. And $1.4m is fairly insignificant in salary cap terms.

but ocho cinco is proven. the only thing miles has proven is he has talent but can't stay healthy so far.

Miles Austin is a restricted free agent. Since he was undrafted if the Cowboys place the low tender on him he can get scooped up (most likely by the Dolphins), and the Cowboys get no draft compensation.

2nd round tender -- 1.45 million.
1st round tender -- 2.2 million

Frankly, given the ridiculous amounts of money the Cowboys have invested in the WR position with the contracts that TO, Roy E and Patrick Crayton make how likely do you think it is they can afford to pay a 4th WR 1.45 million. This combined with the fact that he won't even be able to contribute as a kick returner if Felix reclaims those duties next year. And this is something they can't prorate or ***** on the cap ..this is 1.45 flat 1 year contrat.

I"m thinking the Miles Austin situation might influence a decision on keeping TO pretty soon rather than waiting until June.
If Austin goes elsewhere, then we know what Jerry has to do...

1) Dump Patrick Crayton and Isaiah Stanback

2) ...Four Words. That's all I gotta say.

:)

.

I'm firmly on the Austin bandwagon, but surely you can see the difference between giving up a 1st and 3rd for Miles Austin and someone giving up a 1st and 3rd for Chad Johnson coming off a 93 catch 1,440 yard season.

allowing austin to get away would be complete insanity.

he is a guy right on the verge of becoming a playmaker and he is a terrific kick returner to boot.

he's solid. terrefic kick returners don't get tackled by the kicker let alone like 3 times in one season.

Yep.

I think "how" good he is maybe the only question. He has developed nicely and seems to have worked on his hands quite a bit.

I remember a few years ago some were clamoring for the guy to be cut because he dropped some passes.

Im ready to roll with Roy Williams, Patrick Crayton and Miles Austin right now.

a few? that was like 7/8 months ago lol

that's what signing players like TO does for you, you have to make hard decisions that really are pretty easy, whether to keep or let go of a young, talented player that you developed

Jerry has made some very good roster decisions, but extending TO was ********

Fans = Over reactions to every misstep.

Whats the hit on trading Crayton?
B/c hes kind of a bad fit.

Austin would make a much better 3rd WR in our offense

if T O is kept on the team this year, to me, Crayton will be traded, this year

Amen to that.

His numbers are good. He is always right on the edge of breaking free. I can forgive him for getting tackled by the kicker now and then. Everyone does.

especially when the guy is tackling him at the 50.

Either way when we send jones and austin back to return kicks, that is a seriously talented kick return duo.

Actually, that would be a DUMB way of doing things. If another team identifies Miles Austin as a good, long term player for the WR position, it would be right down STUPID for that team not to trade for him.

Why ?

Because if he's that good, instead of a 2nd round pick and perhaps a reasonable contract ( somewhere around 2-3 mills per year ), he'd cost at least 5 times what he's worth now just on the fact that they'd be more than one team bidding for his services.

Heck, if the Cowboys just tender him the minimum ( ie: no compensation ), you'll see his price sky rocket as it is.

That's the fact that people in this forum don't understand, or don't want to understand, about the Roy Williams trade.

IMO, the Cowboys are going to tender him with a 2nd round tag. If a team is willing to give that up the pick ( tell me why Tennessee, who's picking late in the 2nd round and could use somebody like him right now, wouldn't offer him a contract ? ) the Cowboys would most likely let him walk. If no team offers him and he returns, he'd be even more of an insurance policy if the Cowboys get rid of T.O.

that is true, maybe I'm just looking it at the fact that Austin will be buried in our offense, so their won't be a very big market for his services once he becomes a UFA

I remember hearing somewhere that when Jerry Jones was trading for Roy Williams it was originally planned to be a 1St round pick and Miles Austin for Roy Williams. That's when Jerry threw in a 3rd ound pick instead of trading Miles Austin. This is just a rumor that I think I heard from Nick Eatman on the "Lunch Break." With that said I think we know how much The Cowboys vaule Miles and I think he gets the 2nd round tender.
