I would like to keep Austin. He has pretty good potential, but he can't stay healthy long enough to show it as much as he should.

that is true, maybe I'm just looking it at the fact that Austin will be buried in our offense, so their won't be a very big market for his services once he becomes a UFA

He's been, basically, buried in our offense since he came to Dallas, but yet the interest for him still has gone up. Whenever he touches the ball, it seems that a big play happens ( wether it's returning a kick off or scoring on a bomb or drawing PI penalties ) and teams notice that.

You can forget about hidding anybody in this league. It's too popular and too sophisticated for that to happen. Especially when it comes to Dallas Cowboys players.

idk man, I don't see many teams overpaying for Miles Austin

trying to steal him off the Cowboy's PS is one thing, but...

and what I mean by buried is that he's behind TO, Witten and probably Roy in the pecking order

Perhaps that's a factor, but I don't think it's a big one AND the Cowboys were burned with another receiver who had a similar problem ( although it wasn't just the injuries in his case ).

That receiver's name is Jimmy Smith.

I don't think Jerrah has ever forgotten that one.

I understand what you are saying, but austin had a knee issue this year. He hasnt really been injured other than that.

ANd one thing people are not including in this is how much romo likes him and how much garrett likes him.

I can imagine he gets away. And if he does shame on the cowboys.

Like I said, he's always been buried in the depth chart. When it wasn't because of T.O, it was because of Glenn or Keyshawn.

As far as overpaying for him, well, I've already mentioned Tennessee, but Baltimore, Miami Dullphins, Seattle Seahawks.. just to name a few, would be interested in him.

You're preaching to the choir. If he's going to be living the Cowboys this year, at the very least, I expect a 2nd round for him. Anything less than that is outright incompentence.

The Jimmy Smith analogy was in reference to the Cowboys not showing patience with young receivers. Although Jimmy Smith's problem was also psycological ( he was inmature ), the Cowboys lost patience with him when he suffered the abs strain that put him out for a year. Now, they weren't alone on that one since the Beagles did the same thing before he landed in Jacksonville, but the Cowboys felt they let one get away.

In a way, the same thing could be said about Antonio Bryant, but with him it was purely inmaturity on his part.

I like Austin, but I don't understand why several people seem to believe he will necessarily be any more than what he already is.

I want to keep Austin and would be willing to use a second-round tender to do so, but I'm under no delusions that it's a given he will develop into a No. 2 or No. 1 receiver.

What we've seen might be all we get ... a third or fourth receiver who can use his speed to occasionally contribute.

I think we get caught up with potential and project things that just might never develop. These guys look good to us simply because they are in a position to flash their potential, but not in a position to be scrutinized on an every-down basis.

I'd love to see Austin show he indeed should be a No. 2 receiver, but remain skeptical at least until he shows he can take over the No. 3 role and be a major/consistent threat in that role.

I think it would be foolish to let Austin go. Dallas need to hold onto the young talent that they develop. Letting Austin go is essentially wasting three years at that position.

Hurd and Stanback are JAGs. Austin can really be a player in the future.

a few? that was like 7/8 months ago lol

that's what signing players like TO does for you, you have to make hard decisions that really are pretty easy, whether to keep or let go of a young, talented player that you developed

Jerry has made some very good roster decisions, but extending TO was ********

Nah, im talking about a few seasons ago where Miles Austin dropped 2-3 balls and a few of those would have went for touchdowns.

My memory is not the greatest but I am thinking it was Preseason Game against Denver in 2007.

After that game, alot of people said the guy sucks and needed to be traded. I remember Rack saying that he at least showed that he could get open and needed to work on his hands in that thread.

I'll admit I wasn't sure he'd make it out of TC last year if he didn't step up. I'm happy to say he did and I was wrong. :laugh2:

We better keep him. I've been a Miles fan since I went to the 2006 Thanksgiving Day game two years ago and saw him in warmups. His ability just jumps out at you, and now he's turning that into production.

And I seriously doubt anyone would give a second for him. Even if they tried, we could match the contract.

We as fans over rate Miles Austin but I don't see other teams giving a 2nd rounder for a #4 receiver just because he has, "Potential" to be a #2. Having said all that, I hope we keep him....

allowing austin to get away would be complete insanity.

he is a guy right on the verge of becoming a playmaker and he is a terrific kick returner to boot.

And...

He's the only WR who didn't complain about "how he was being used" or "the scheme". He didn't complain about not playing when he probably should have been playing in December. Williams was hobbled and Owens couldn't get open very much.

Jason Garrett is on the record about his like for Miles Austin. He's an undrafted free agent you hit on. The organization, including Garrett, would have a fit. Austin is a homerun threat.

And...

He suffered the knee injury on KICKOFF COVERAGE while he was torching the Chargers. Austin was showing that he had starting ability, and the coaches didn't do a good job of getting him off kickoff coverage. At that point, he had no business on it.

I remember hearing somewhere that when Jerry Jones was trading for Roy Williams it was originally planned to be a 1St round pick and Miles Austin for Roy Williams. That's when Jerry threw in a 3rd ound pick instead of trading Miles Austin. This is just a rumor that I think I heard from Nick Eatman on the "Lunch Break." With that said I think we know how much The Cowboys vaule Miles and I think he gets the 2nd round tender.
You beat me to it. I heard that too and it illustrates perfectly how Jerry Jones feels about Miles Austin.
