Before I make my remarks I have to say that I love Jason Witten and what he means as a player and person on the Cowboys.
Having said that, I do watch these pass catching TE's that aren't necessarily good inline blockers make big plays for their teams on Sundays and it makes me envious to be honest. Dallas has been horrible in getting Escobar on the field and in situations to succeed. His 7TD's on 26 receptions tell me that he can be a playmaker at the very least in the redzone. With this rehab process being anywhere from 6-12 months for an athlete, it is a shame that he may leave and be successful elsewhere much like Fasano and Bennett. The problem is that one day Witten will not be here and his eventual phase out has to begin sooner rather than later. These coaches have to make that tough decision this offseason in my opinion. Witten is still very solid but not a difference maker IMHO. Good thing is...the front office obviously knows NFL starting caliber TE's. However, using another 2nd rounder on the position and not playing the kid right away will no longer fly.
Hopefully, Escobar's rehab goes well and he is back by August or September (that's 8-9 months of rehab assuming he had surgery early this month). If he is able to be healthy by then and the staff makes a true effort to get him involved...great! But, those are big "IF's" and we as fans may be hearing O.J. Howard's or Hunter Henry's name in the 2nd only to see them not be utilized at all year one. Compound that pick with a QB at #4 and Dallas will have no immediate starters to show with their premium picks come April.
Here's hoping that isn't the case and the light comes on for the staff and Escobar can come back healthy sometime this season.
