The thing is, the Cowboys dont develop players like they used too. Most other teams developed their players and you have to have a good coaching staff that knows how. We dont have that kind of coaching staff. We only rely on players who are drafted high, who have exceptional athletic ability (if were lucky and hit in later rounds). We also have Jimmy Johnson syndrome or at least Jerry does. Since Jimmy was able to find talent all over the draft rounds and from small colleges he thinks its easy and he can do the same. It hasn't worked. Just sayin...

Ask yourself when was the last time we had an offensive or defensive rookie of the year...

These guys hardly ever even get playing time, because garrett wants young players to "earn" their playing time.

Do you think Escobar re-signs with the Cowboys to be a TE2? Does that make any sense to you? His last year as a Cowboy will be rehabbing his injury.

He'll sign a one year deal somewhere else on a team that needs a starting tight end of his abilities.

I think the developing hole at the position makes it a reasonable chance he comes back.

No chance. Why wait to start in Dallas, when he can start day 1 somewhere else. Besides the QB position here will be in flux by the time the position hole actually developed.

There was never really a beginning of Escobar. There were games last season I don't even remember seeing him on the field. Most of the sitings of him were pics of him boarding the team plane.

It's all good with the extra comp picks you can bank at least two TE's drafted to take up more pine:thumbup:

Obviously, Escobar must not be living up to his potential if he can't beat out Hanna as the second TE. And granted, Marty B. has done better elsewhere, but I wouldn't call him one of the "best".

Hanna has been on the team for a year longer, and had elements of his play that matched up more with what the Cowboys actually wanted from a second receiver. If you compare their numbers, Escobar has much better numbers than Hanna. He was a receiving tight end and we all knew that when he was drafted.

They also made it a point of emphasis to improve Esco's blocking to try and get him on the field more.Maybe it didn't improve enough. Or maybe Garrett just doesn't like him.

If he had been good until the injury he'd be in the same spot.
Needing to show he can play after this injury.
Dallas at least has him in the building all year.

Witten may well be retired come 2017 but even if he isn't that is the last year of his contract.

Why would some other team pay him big money coming off an Achilles unless he proves himself in 2016?

If he does prove himself why would Dallas let him walk knowing Witten is almost done?

MartyB was here while Witten was an All-Pro. But MartyB has also been on multiple teams since. He's searching for happiness....

The real question with Escobar is does this injury force Dallas to draft TE again fairly early.....

Apologies, I thought it was an ACL, but you're right either way, it's a long road. And either way it spells a definite end of his time here in Dallas. Someone will take a flier on him as their starter in 2017.
Wait, what? He's got another year on his contract, they aren't just going to release him.

An Achilles injury might take a year for full strength to come back, but he'll be healed enough to participate in training camp if I had to guess. August 19 would mark 8 months since the injury, so while he won't be 100%, he should be healthy enough to participate.

He is a free agent in 2017. He will spend most of 2016 rehabbing and just getting healthy enough to play football again. I doubt he is healthy enough for camp or preseason.

Before I make my remarks I have to say that I love Jason Witten and what he means as a player and person on the Cowboys.

Having said that, I do watch these pass catching TE's that aren't necessarily good inline blockers make big plays for their teams on Sundays and it makes me envious to be honest. Dallas has been horrible in getting Escobar on the field and in situations to succeed. His 7TD's on 26 receptions tell me that he can be a playmaker at the very least in the redzone. With this rehab process being anywhere from 6-12 months for an athlete, it is a shame that he may leave and be successful elsewhere much like Fasano and Bennett. The problem is that one day Witten will not be here and his eventual phase out has to begin sooner rather than later. These coaches have to make that tough decision this offseason in my opinion. Witten is still very solid but not a difference maker IMHO. Good thing is...the front office obviously knows NFL starting caliber TE's. However, using another 2nd rounder on the position and not playing the kid right away will no longer fly.

Hopefully, Escobar's rehab goes well and he is back by August or September (that's 8-9 months of rehab assuming he had surgery early this month). If he is able to be healthy by then and the staff makes a true effort to get him involved...great! But, those are big "IF's" and we as fans may be hearing O.J. Howard's or Hunter Henry's name in the 2nd only to see them not be utilized at all year one. Compound that pick with a QB at #4 and Dallas will have no immediate starters to show with their premium picks come April.

Here's hoping that isn't the case and the light comes on for the staff and Escobar can come back healthy sometime this season.

I hope he's reading this and using it for tackle fuel.

What's key is his rapport with Romo. Romo would throw him the ball. If he comes back healthy then I can see where he can continue to develop.

I refuse to be prejudiced against second round TE. It's irrational. I refuse to blame or fault the receivers in the middle of the field. Weeden and Cassel were both afraid to pull the trigger over the middle where mistakes are made. I find it interesting that Bease gets a pass.

That's not even close. An Achilles is a 6-8 month injury. The only reason they would have him sit out and rehab is that they don't want him on the field.

I ruptured mine in June and had surgery on June 30. I played basketball on December 15, which is 5 and a half months after surgery...and that's with working a full-time job and not being able to get in the gym every single day. The guy's job is to rehab. He should be fine come training camp.

It always makes me laugh when people refer to seasons in which the Cowboys had an ELITE offense, and complain about "Garrett's lack of creativity" in those particular seasons.

Scouts are saying there are only 6 "complete" TEs in the league now. Witten and his 3 yard routes is one of em. Position not being produced out of college like they used to be. Wouldnt put Escobar out by the curb just yet.

Why the three yard route comment. What is Witten's career YPC? If you want to complain about his lack of breaking tackles then I'm in agreement. Most people wouldn't complain about a first ballot HOFer TE who is also a model citizen.

Escobar tore his Achilles. Not good. He may not have been used properly and that's my opinion. But there may be reasons why he never got into the offense besides he or the coaches suck. IDK and no one here knows for certain either.

When does season 2 come out? Have you watched "F is for Family"? Bill Burr, the comedian, is the voice of the father. I'm excited about the return of Orange is the New Black.

Oh, and football.

Thanks for the info.
