The front office has failed to build depth - again

We have serious coaching issues when losing one player causes the defense to completely collapse. Lee is very good, but if your defense falls apart when he's out, your coaching sucks. The same can be said about Green. He played well last year, but looked like a high school player last Sunday. Why? I think trying to convert him to a guard caused some of the problems, but he shouldn't have been that bad. Aside from that, why did the staff do absolutely nothing to adjust when he was getting destroyed? I have zero faith in this coaching staff and I never have, even when we played well. I think we played well despite terrible coaching.

The crushing loss to the Atlanta Falcons showed that the Dallas Cowboys are suffering from an old bugaboo. They have a very good, perhaps great, starting roster, but when some key injuries happen, they don’t have effective depth to compensate.

And this is a failing that falls largely on the top management for the team. Specifically Jerry Jones has to take responsibility for this. There have certainly been some misfires in the acquisition of players, but this is one area where Jones’ approach to that has shaped things. Now it is threatening to drop the Cowboys out of the playoffs altogether.

The big issues in that 27-7 drubbing were the absence of Tyron Smith and the loss of Sean Lee at the end of the first quarter. In both cases, Dallas had no answer. The coaches certainly made some errors along the way, both in preparation for the game and in not finding ways to adjust adequately. But in hindsight, it is clear that the coaching staff was hamstrung (pun intended) by the lack of the right personnel.

Exhibit A has to be Chaz Green. He was a monumental failure as Smith’s backup. He was simply awful, and it seemed to be both a lack of technique and physical ability. Adrian Clayborn had a career game. It was so good, he really should tip Green.

When you depend ONLY on the draft and half those guys get injured or suspended it makes it tough. And then of course there are the horrid player evaluations like Green, Heath, Williams, backup RB's, ect....ect... They never trade for anyone. Its an avenue they simply dont use anymore while other teams use it all the time to help build the roster. FA is used for bottom of the barrel types. And most of those retired, quit, or got cut already this year.

So basically if we dont nail every draft pick then how do we possibly bring in new talent? Now there is always the far and few between like David Irvin. Then you also have the problem of not getting rookies like Switzer up to speed and more involved in the offense from the start.

Sure it was.

But it was a power struggle with Garrett and that just can't happen.

Look no further than how well Washington managed to weather the storm when their entire offensive line was out injured.

Callahan kept it together. Ours loses one and it all falls apart.

Yep, Callahan hated Garrett. Jumped ship the first chance he got.

Just these past two weeks, I've seen teams somehow handle Von Miller with backups. How is that possible? One word - coaching. Some teams have it, some teams don't. Some coaches can compensate if they don't have Pro Bowlers all over the field, and some can't.

Garrett said it point blank in his press conference when asked about Chaz Green. He said that they are sooo used to Smith handling the LT spot that things like chip blocking, using help and other techniques they just didnt think about with Green. Just goes to show what a complete idiot the guy is. Incapable of seeing anything in the future, or making adjustments on the fly. All the moron does is say "next man up" and expect the status quo. Total and complete stupidity.

Depth is an issue for most teams in the salary cap/free agent era.

Good teams adjust to what they have to minimize weaknesses as best they can, rather than just plugging the back up in and hoping for the best.

I don't think OL depth is OK.

I don't think either of the backups can play. Green was abysmal, but Bell was no better when he came in. They're dead in the water if either of those guys has to play left tackle.

But yeah, sit on your hands while you keep guys around like Benwikere and March-Lillard who you never want to see the field.

All while guys like Green, Bell, and Jaylon Smith help you end up with another wasted season.

I completely agree. Depth was not good this year.

Did he actually say that?

That's a fireable offense for me.

There was a power struggle.

Can't ever have Garrett being pushed or challenged, can we?

Remember Dan Reeves?

People leave the Cowboys and drop hints about Garrett all the time. Wade certainly gave us a few tidbits. Remember Crayton telling us that as soon as Wade was fired, Garrett busted out a new playbook? "where were all these plays before" was his exact quote. Garrett is a complete fraud.

Garrett:

"Well, fortunately, when Tyron is playing left tackle for you, we rarely have to game plan any of that kind of stuff,'' Garrett said. "You never really talk about what kind of formation you're going to be in or who's chipping.

Finally, an admission that he can only win when the talent is elite.

I agree about leaving him at OT. All along I said that was dumb.

But I disagree about being ready to throw him out. It wouldn't matter to me one way or another at this point. Heck, bring in Greg Robinson and try to rehabilitate him. At least he would likely hold up better physically.

I think Chaz Green is a fragile player. Physically and mentally. A nice guy? Sure I guess. But on the offensive line, in the trenches, nice guys finish last.

I don't even expect to see Green out there this week. If Smith doesn't give it a go, I expect the geniuses to go the "veteran route" with Byron Bell. And he looked every bit as bad as Green did when he got his turn. He looks like a guy who's just happy to dance around like a fool and collect his paycheck. "You mean you want me to play?"

The team's only chance in my opinion is getting Smith back on the field. Somehow, some way. Short of that, tie one hand behind the offense's back and use two of yours to try and block one of theirs.

Chaz Green is a progress stopper and he is garbage. Gotta cut him.

Don't be so impulsive. You haven't seen Bell do a full game yet. If you do on Sunday Night, you might be hoping to get Green back.

I see a case of bad and worse.

Cut him at the end of this year. I wouldnt cut him now. And clearly Green cant be as bad as he showed. But hes still bad and injury prone. Time to move on at the end of this year.

the biggest failure was not evening looking to draft LBs,relying on injury prone Lee and one leg Smith was always going to be a disaster. We have a good pass rush this year but all that is for nothing now.

I'm definitely in agreement about upgrading his roster spot after this season.

They missed. Admit it, move on.
