The Jared Gaither Thread **Merged**

And has very un-jaglike stats for being a jag.

It is also a very unfranchise-like number for being a "franchise tackle".

Dumb thread. The pool of unrestricted free agents is going to be much better next year.

No, and I wouldn't want him to. Free can play LT. I want a LG and Iupati, Ducasse, Pouncey, and Johnson, in that order, are the guys I would prefer. I'd settle for a Jerry or Newhouse later in the Draft, but if I can get Iupati, then I jump all over it.

Gaither has done nothing special and there is not a shred of evidence he will be special. He was a 5th round Supplemental Draft choice and people act like he is Jonathon Ogden. It's ludicrous. He's not that good. He's not even close. I doubt he ever even sniffs a Pro Bowl.

Iupati on the other hand could end up every bit as good as BIGG. I will take that over Gaither any day.

I'm not as confident with Free at LT as I am with Gaither.

Gaither is already battle tested, while Free looked overwhelmed against the Vikes.

I would keep Flozell over trading a 1st or 2nd for Gaither. I would start Free over doing that.

I just don't get the desperate need to acquire Jared Gaither. It borders on obsession. 3 freaking threads about a guy there isn't a shred of evidence we have had any interest in.

It's maddening.

While I'd love to have him, I think Jerry has made it pretty clear that he wants to draft some lineman rather than fill our needs through free agency. He kicked himself for having to sign Bigg Davis and kicked himself again for having to re-sign Flozell. He would have preferred to have had someone waiting in the wings instead, so I think he's going to stick to that.

Great observations.

Of course he looked overwhelmed. He had spent 6 games and 7 weeks doing work as a RT. On top of that he came into the game to face one of the best pure pass rushers in the NFL. When he filled in earlier in the year for Flo he did not look overwhelmed.

I swear it is mind boggling how obvious that is.

If you watched the whole game you would see after the first few plays Free looked pretty good...hence the reason Allen was not getting the number of plays as Edwards on the other side against Columbo who was rusty from coming back from an injury.

Many people take the first series or so from Free and think he sucked instead of watching the whole game and seeing that after a shaky start he did a pretty good job.

Well his stats had him rated as the 11th best tackle in the league in 08 and the 6th best tackle in the league in 09.

For a battle tested 23 year old I would say the potential arrow is pointed up.

because Gaither is 24 has started at LT for the Ravens for the last two years and in that time has been twice as good as Flozell.

We will not get a LT at #27 as good as Gaither. Lupiti(sp) will not be an NFL LT.

Free has not proven he can play LT. Gaither has.

Wishlist
#27 - Draft Pounchy
Trade 2nd for Gaither

O-line in 2011:

LT - Gaither
LG - Brewster
C- Pouncy
RG - Davis
RT - Free

all starters are under 27 except Davis and we can pick a guard in the 2011 draft to replace him in 2012.
That line would get absolutely 0 push running the ball. Brewster is built to be a tackle...especially because he's so top heavy. One of the things this line now has going for them is that they can physically dominate other the other front 7 man-for-man. Taking out Flo, Gurode, and Colombo eliminates that.

So Balt is going to give up a franchise LT for essentially 2 second round picks?? And you're going to start basically a rookie post injury in place of the highest graded OL for the Cowboys as well as replace a Pro Bowl center with a rookie????

Glad you're not a coach or GM for the Cowboys.

I think we don't need multiple threads about Jared Gaither...so I merged all of them so everybody that has a thought in their heads about gaither can find it easily without starting multiple new threads about him.

Yes...I am a jerk.:D

I did watch the whole game and saw Romo get sacked 6 times.

Even Jimmy Kennedy got a sack.....

Inconceivable!

You don't know anything about Gaither then.

I just spent a ton of time over at the Ravens official message board reading up on Gaithers. I essentially came up with the following:

1) The consensus over there is that he is an average to above-average LT and not elite.
2) He is a dominant run blocker at times but very inconsistent in both run blocking and pass protection.
3) He was their most penalized lineman by a lot last season.
4) He came out of Maryland with a lot of character issues which dropped him the the end of the 5th round.
5) His conditioning is bad which jives with the character concerns. He does not finish games well.
6) He has been injured and had to miss time the last two season which does not bode well for a young player.
7) The consensus is that he was outplayed by rookie Michael Oher.

Gaither is being disgustingly overhyped and Free had an excellent season last year, rookie or not, and will only get better. While Gaither is bigger and stronger outweighing Free by 30 pounds, Free is infinitely quicker and faster and showed surprising strength at RT last year. Free didn't give up a sack against Minny.

I am going to play the Spagnola card:

If he is so good, why do the Ravens want to move him to right tackle?

No, profootball focus has him as that and you have no idea how they come up with those numbers.

Boy, you're really going out on a limb.

Free > Gaither?

Free has only started like 7 1/2 games so far and Gaither has started 28 plus another 5 postseason. Trying to downgrade Gaither who's just 24 years old into a bust is laughable.
