You're right, they're not comparable. One is a mainstream device that is becoming synonymous with mobile gaming and the other is a dying breed that only ever thrived in a niche market.

Good lord, really?

A couple things about this post.

1. You're completely unhinged. You need help.
2. Not once have I ever stated anything about 15 billion tablets.

Now show me where the DS "eclipsed" the iPad in sales.

Are those global numbers?

Yes, for both.

And for the record I even consider the iPad a niche device right now, though obviously with projected sales of 30-40 million in 2011 it's breaking into more mainstream. But due to its high price it's hardly a ubiquitous device.

I don't agree with you that the Nintendo's portables sales are "pathetic" but those are interesting numbers.

I don't really consider the iPad a gaming device to begin with, I'm not sure gaming factors into the decision for most purchasers. It certainly didn't for me.

I've never claimed anyone buys an iPad for gaming, though it's certainly one of its coolest uses and will likely become a primary use for some in the future.

I simply made the claim that dedicated mobile gaming devices don't sell that well. Someone pointed me to the Nintendo DS sales and I was showing how even the iPad, a niche device, outsells them.

If other tablets come even close to catching up with the iPad, the tablet market will sell 100 times as many units as these Nintendo handhelds sold.

I know math is a weak spot for you, so I'll help you out. That equates approximately 15 billion units.

According to Theo, all major gaming devices in history are niche. That's all Nintendo (NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Gameboy, GBA, DS, 3DS), Sega (Sega Master System, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, Game Gear), Playstation (1, 2, and 3), Xbox (original and 360), NeoGeo, etc. are all a part of a nich market. None of those systems have ever had a major market, ever.

Right, like the Nintendo DS "eclipsing" the iPad in sales?

Adding up the numbers from that post equals 46 million. Multiply that times 100 and you have you have 4.6 billion. So, your 15 billion was pulled out of your ***.

Similarly, that 100x figure was just pulled out of my ***. I wasn't actually suggesting that 4.6 billion tablets would be sold in five years. Only a nutcase would take that statement literally. And here we are.....

I'd love to have whatever it is you're smoking. I just hope it doesn't impair my ability to spell or make coherent thought too.

Oh, at least you finally admit it, you pull stuff out of your ***, though it's been obvious to everyone for a long time now.

and the DS has sold 144+ million units as of the end of 2010, so you're looking at 15 billion worldwide. Not that that 4.6 billion makes you look any less foolish. You love to stick to US numbers only for the DS don't you?

By that last sentence, am I to assume you are denying that assertion? Please clarify, do you think all those other systems are niche as well?

Oh, and yes, as I stated, the DS got out of the box much faster than the Ipad (almost 1 million more units in half the time). And the DS has had a steady of history of high volume sales year after year. Will the Ipad top that? Maybe at some point, but I highly doubt it'll have the sustained success of the DS.

Only in the mind of a complete lunatic is the most successful handheld gaming device a niche device. :laugh2:

It doesn't matter how many people are playing angry birds. What matters is revenue, and the revenue from sales of mobile games is not even the tiny little fingernail of the revenue from sales of actual handheld games.

Your argument is like saying that CD players are better than ipods, because there are more people driving automobiles than there are owning ipods, and all those cars have a CD player.

It's one of the dumbest arguments I've ever seen, but I do want to thank you for the entertainment value you provide. It's like watching a monkey dance.

iPad - 500,000 units sold on first week
DS - 500,000 units sold on first week

iPad - 1.7 million per month over the first 9 months.
Nintendo DS - 1.0 million per month over the first 17 months.

Ipad - 2,000,000 units sold in 80 days

Do you, or do you not consider all those other gaming systems niche?

Actually, the iPad sold 3 million units in 80 days.

If the iPad had launched just before Christmas (as the Nintendo DS did) instead of April, it would have sold even more. Once you take out the seasonal aspect, you can see how much the iPad outsold the DS. For example:

iPad - 1.7 million per month over the first 9 months.
Nintendo DS - 1.0 million per month over the first 17 months.

Ah, so you see the fallacy of the numbers you're using above right? And again, shortages mean nothing to you. And again, you avoid answering the question about the other game systems.

You're right on one thing though, I did messed up on the numbers. It took 61 days to sell 2,000,000 not 80. And nearly another 19 days after that to match the DS' first 40 days. Doesn't change the point one bit though.

No. All I see is you using wrong numbers page after page after page.
