I most certainly had heard of Vernon last year, and wondered if his market-setting salary would justify great run D and about 10 sacks a season max. I'm still not sure it does, but he did have a nice impact with the Giants this season.

well i had no idea who vernon was until the FA articles mentioned vernon as the best available.
i certainly know who Suh was.
i guess you just follow the league more than i do.

Or draft the player and pay him not to leave...Like we have been doing with or All Pro and Pro Bowl worthy Offensive line.

the difference is the average expected # of years.
OLs last much longer.
so if the FO actually had the strategy to build the team from OL, then it was brilliant.
we get the OL probowlers and sign them to extensions before FA come up.
get them at a great discount, and it is a gift that keeps giving for long contracts (unless injury : ( )
Coupled that with the $10M/yr annual cap rise and Romo's salary being probably gone, we have the opportunity I am suggesting.

WRs and RBs have shorter life in their primes.
Same as CBs and most LBs.

We now have OL and QB locked up - the 2 positions with the longest primes in NFL careers.
Now we need to match our strategy to our assets that age quickly - RB and WR1.
I dont think we have 4 years with Dez.

If you watch the 2015 game between Miami and Dallas you will see Vernon give Tyron Smith fits. He plays Smith better than anyone in the league. But he's not a natural speed rusher and isn't likely to be a 15-sack guy.

I think you're trying to manufacture an argument here where there is none

not really.
i was just drawing a comparison between the national debt and the cowboys salary cap.
i do think it is an interesting comparison and psychology of handling debt could affect rational decision-making in the salary cap.

The fans who scream "spend, spend, spend" will be the first ones blaming Jerry when they sign a player who doesn't live up to his perceived worth based on his salary
I remember fans screaming for Roy Williams then bashing Jerry for getting him

that is not true.......you don't make any shots you don't take

the Roy Williams trade was worth a chance but the extension was bad once we saw how it was working

the hindsight crowd is always going to be there but I am all for aggressive moves

that is just not true.
i dont even blame them for buying the 2nd tier FAs (thornton) last year because no one expected 2016 to be what it was - so it was rational.
however, going forward, there is no excuse to save money when we are now in our championship window.

never blamed Jerry for Gregory - a 2nd round pick is a good gamble for a potential probowler.
i was happy with jaylon - again a good gamble IF he had medical input which they did.

regarding roy williams, i was neither here nor there.
i did not have a problem with galloway either.
galloway was supposed to the aikman's remaining window, so that was rational.
now did he get ripped off or could someone else negotiate a better deal?
what i do not see is over-reaching without input by football people.
if you are going to spend $ or spend draft picks to trade, get the best guys you can.

well we can get what we can get.
those players i named are improvements over what we got.
if you get 3 top FAs, that would allow you to go BPA in the draft and hopefully get a few more probowlers to continue the trend.
if we continue to draft that well, then the tank would not even be necessary since the replacements for the FAs and aging stars would be drafted - even better.

RBs like Elliott do not often stay dominant for more than 4-5 years.
The window is a precious thing to waste.
Rather be a candle that burns bright for a short time than a candle that never burns bright enough.

I would be looking for a RB to pair with Zeke to take some carries off of him so he can last. He is too valuable to run in the ground. We need to not have a massive drop off when he is off the field.

I'm seeing a need for instant gratification here.

"I want an Oompa Loompa now!"

Just get me a name, any name. And pay money, big money. Not even the thought put into deciding which name might actually be worth the investment.

Spend, spend, spend, kick the can down the road as far as you can, and screw yourself for the future. Some plan.

"Don't care how, I want it now!"

But the Patriots are Frugal so they never blow up the team
Think about how many more superbowls Brady would have won if the Pats tanked 1 year every 5 years to reload on 1 key high #1 pick (WR1, RB, dominant DL/OLB or shutdown corner)
thats a good point, the nfl doesnt condone that, but not a bad idea.

This team is doing it the right way (finally). When has spending big in FA ever led to a championship? A piece here or there can help, but you need to be smart about it. Most teams are spending bigger money to keep the guys they develop, so the players that hit FA are - with very few exceptions - players not worth top dollar.
Denver did it and got the SB with it, but that is the only one I can think of.
