The refs' "missed" fumble on Schultz changed the entire complexion of the game

Since people here like to contend that they just want a fairly called game I'm shocked that this play hasn't been talked about. With Indy already up 3-0 and the Cowboys driving for what would be their first score, Schultz clearly fumbles this ball that the refs, who you all say swallow their whistles, immediately blow a play dead that was a fumble and Indy had pounced on. @Blackrain told me to be vigilant about what the refs might be up to in this game and will you look at this? An egregious benefit to Dallas who were trailing and about to go down 10-0 if this had stood. With the Cowboys as notorious slow starters, pass-happy Moore probably would have abandoned the run and Air (Pick City) Prescott would have been front and center in the offense. This obvious intentional blown call kept that from happening. Matthew Stafford said it best about AT&T Stadium: "Home cookin'!"

Can you get larger shot of this? It looks to me here like he has it in one hand, and although his arm gets outstretched, the move doesn't move in his hand until he's well down, which is why the ball comes back toward him instead of the defender. Also, I think I remember seeing him recover the ball.

It's nice to get a break once in a while because the Cowboys have had their fair share of oh well too bad.

Schultz still recovered it anyway so what's the big deal? Indy didn't pounce on it.. The two idiot talking heads on TV didn't even bring that up cuz it would derail their Cowboys' hate.

nice photo. it clearly shows that he was down way before the ball came out...in your original Gif it showed the ball wasn't out of his hands when his knee and elbow hit the ground.

try something else.
While I don't think it was a fumble either, this picture shows the ball on the ground, and being a still photo it's impossible to know what happened before or after, which is why @MarcusRock usually refuses to consider them as evidence in a play like this.

I like how the OP lumps everyone into the same category. If you question any officiating, you must be in the
"Conspiracy theory / the refs are against Dallas crowd."

Well, the Cowboys recovered it anyway so it had no bearing on the game. Not to mention his knee is pretty clearly down.

I love how people in here routinely pick out one play and claim it completely changed a 40 point game

hahahahaha. Yes. That fumble - which Dallas recovered , if it was even a fumble, was worth 50 points for the colts.

great thread.
His point isn't that it cost the Colts the game. His point is merely to show the more conspiracy theory minded people that the officials err in our favor too...Though I think this is a bad example of that.

lool, oh you think “possession” is him simply still touching the ball?
I certainly don't think that way, but I do believe the ball needs to be moving in the hand, which it doesn't appear to be until after he's down, in this clip. He seems to have a firm grip on it, even though his arm is being pulled away from his body. I'd like to see this closer up, or larger.

The conspiracy minded, while they do exist, are the minority. Ironically, the only ones the OP really wants to debate with.

no dummy. he had the ball. the ball was still in his hand, it was in process of coming lose, but the NFL rules are clear on this. it must be completely out for it to be considered otherwise. I don't make the rules. NFL does. so if you have any complaints then just send an email to Goodell, I am sure he will respond to you.

grow up.
I believe the ball is considered loose if it begins to slide or roll in his hands or in this case, hand. Judging by this clip, it doesn't appear to do that until after he's clearly down.

Even if this call favoured the Cowboys…So. Plenty of calls go against us as well.

If the other coach thought the call was wrong all he had to do was reach into his back pocket and throw that red challenge flag. It's really that simple. He would have lost the challenge and the timeout because even though it was a fumble, Schultz was clearly the player that gained possession of the fumble. That's probably why the other coach did not challenge it. It would have been a waste of a challenge and a timeout.

Why was this ruled a fumble then? Zeke touched down in the middle of this but the ball started coming out before.

I guess they must've felt the ball was slipping in his hands before his elbow touched.

Marcus as you can see from your gif Shultz still has control of the ball even when his arm is pulled from his body - then the ball breaks loose.

Try again!
