The Roy Williams Thread *merged*

Roy has been my favorite player on this team for the last 5 years....

But as long as he is playing DB on this team, the secondary will ALWAYS be a liabilty...

Solution..

Draft a safety like Kenny Phillips with one of your first round picks to replace Roy in the Next couple of years...

I defend Roy all the time but he reacts to slow while the ball is in the air.

You might want to see that again....Lorenzen was into his slide two yards before the marker....it had little to do with Roy turning him sideways.
It's laughable that some are trying to say he made a play there. The refs were going to spot Lorenzen short anyway because he was sliding. And with 3 minutes left, Eli out of the game, and the Giants down 10, the game was already decided.

It's a hard truth for Cowboy fans: Roy Williams just isn't a very good player. His pass defense is amongst the worst of any starting NFL DBs. And his run defense isn't much better. When's the last time he punished a RB at the line of scrimmage? He's not even a solid tackler anymore. He's become almost completely useless.

I think something has happened to Roy. An injury to someone else or maybe something someone said to him has scared him. He's afraid to hit. He doesn't fly around and level guys the way he used to. When's the last time he punished someone the way he did Amani Toomer 2 years ago? Or knocked a guy backwards the way he did Shaun Alexander 3 or 4 years ago? The guy starting at SS right now bears no resemblance to the guy we drafted 5 years ago.

Beat me to it. There are three things which are undeniable:

1. Roy Williams ain't going nowhere
2. Roy Williams was never drafted to be a cover safety (so why keep crying about it?)
3. Roy Williams would've been tested in bringing down a 280+ lb quarterback if said QB didn't start sliding far short of the first down marker

Hamlin is making a believer out of me.

RW's rookie year, he wasn't a huge liability in coverage. And it wasn't just because Darren Woodson was his running mate.

Hamlin looked like one of the few players on defense who wasn't afraid to hit someone.

4. Roy Williams was suppose to be proving support on 3 passing TDs and was late getting there on 2 of them and out of position on the 3rd.

Granted hes not a COVER safety but hell I wouldnt mind him being a safety every once in a while. He isnt even adequate in coverage.

The base defense has changed since Roy's rookie season.

Whether fans like it or not, Roy wasn't drafted to be a great coverage strong safety. If fans don't like it, they can complain to the man who drafted him. After almost 20 years of ownership, he's become well accustomed to hearing complaints for some time now.

Well, I believe a safety should be able to cover. Anything else is just admitting you have weaknesses in your front 7, so you need a that safety in run support.

Now I do believe when Newman is back, it will improve Roy, especially in the nickel. But we all should be tired of having find a way to hide Roy from getting abused.

He wasn't drafted to be abused week after week either. There is no scheme at the professional level that allows a safety to get by without at least some coverage skills.

Parcells said 2 years ago when he switched to the 3-4 that there wasn't a big impact on the secondary in changing. And new base defense or not, Roy was able to make some of these plays 4 years ago. Right now, he's pretty useless out there.

A safety that can only play run support and can't cover is about as useful as a WR who can only run block but can't run pass routes. If/when Newman comes back, Roy is still going to have to be in coverage. Teams aren't going to stop going to multiple WR sets and their not going to stop putting athletic TE's on the field.

Bull ...... He has lead the team in interceptions many times in his career. Roy plays well in coverage if he is allowed to play his game.

So, what are the options at strong safety this season? This is a serious question.

Tell Jared "I eat my weight in suck" Lorenzen that Roy doesnt hit hard

The game was all but over dude, that play doesn't count for anything worth while...

How many of those picks were underthrown balls....

Probably 3/4 of them..

Underthrown balls find him in perfect position to make a play after WR run by him...

Dude you're preaching to mute ears and blind eyes on this board, they will come up with all kinds of excuses for Roy Williams..

I would hate to mention the fact that Burress owns Williams throughout his career against the Cowboys.

I believe many of them were him jumping the rout.

And I also believe that "underthrown" balls are probably 3/4 of all interceptions ..... so once again that is a ******** stat to throw out there.

I've defended him to the very end , but I can't do it anymore . Obviously he's poor at best in coverage . The few Ints. he grabs a year are usually off tipped balls and floaters . It's not like he's jumping routes ! I realize he wasn't drafted to be a cover safety , but he's become anemic against the run as well . No plays made behind the line of scrimage , no more crushing hits , and at least once a game he gets flat run over like Shockey did to him last night .

I'm not on the Roy sucks bandwagon , and I don't belive he needs to be traded . I do however think he needs to be situational player who comes in on short yardage plays . Personally I'd like to see Hamlin slide up to SS and play Watkins a little more at FS .

My hope is that he's just been a little slow to adjust to the new scheme and will return to the dominant force he once was . With Ferguson lost for the season , we've never needed the "old" Roy so badly !

he's getting run over alot lately too, he looked awful last night. maybe it was just a bad game, but if you combine the giants game with the second half of last season, then there is cause for concern.

...you know the one where he blitzes up the middle directly into a lineman making sure he gets himself blocked. Actually, there was a different twist on it in the new scheme. He blitzes directly into a lineman, stops, then starts backpedaling into coverage. The twist makes sure he doesn't get to the QB and also is unable to get back far enough to cover anyone. This drove me crazy last year and looks like it will be more of the same. :(

Yep, I noticed the same thing a couple of times last night. It seems like the first couple of years in the league he would have ripped and exploded through, getting some kind of pass rush ... or even ........ a sack!
