The problem is that if you are a mid-round team and want a top-level quarterback prospect in this day and age, you are going to have to trade up sooner or later. I was looking at a mock draft the other day, and it had Bridgewater, Manziel, Bortles, and Hundley in the top 5 and Carr at No. 8.

I think this idea that we'll just take whoever slides and hope ..... well, let's just say I would rather the Cowboys decide who they want this year or next and then go do everything necessary to get that guy.

I think Johnny is a better passer than rg3 was coming out and I don't think Manziel HAS to run to be successful. I think Russell Wilson is a better comparison, he too has been undersized but is a great leader and just flat out wins. I will admit that I have concerns as to whether Johnny has a strong enough arm to put the ball into a much tighter window in the nfl than he had in college. But the bottom line is Manziel is the most dynamic and exciting player I've seen since Vick and Barry sanders.any owner that passes on Johnny loses a lot of money cuz he is gonna put tails in seats. I have always hated a&m but Johnny has made them must-see TV for me last two seasons. And he's made a marginal team a contender.

No doubt that Johnny is an exciting college player. It has many non-Aggies (including me) watching A&M football; however, Tim Tebow and Vince Young were also exciting college QBs. I'm not comparing them physically in their style, but just the fact that excitement level of a college player is a non-factor when determining that player's value to the NFL.

Russell Wilson might be a close physical comparison, but from what I've heard Wilson is has the perfect mental makeup to play QB in the NFL. There was an interview with Pete Carrol where he discussed Wilson's unique mental approach to the game from the day he arrived in Seattle. Wilson might also have a stronger arm.

Jerry does not need Johnny to sell tickets or merchandise. Johnny would be in a much better situation if he went to Jacksonville or somewhere that the spotlight is minimal.

This would be another huge mistake by this franchise, probably a top 5 mistake of all-time. Not only do I think he will be a bust, but if he can't play on the defensive line, it won't matter who our QB is.

This team can not keep ignoring the trenches, period.

Manziel may turn out to be decent but that is a luxury we can not afford at this time. Although, if we draft another early TE and WR, then I would look back and say why not for Johnny.

The draft better be mostly defense with a guard mixed in or this team is still stuck in a rut.

The thing is everyone says it would be too expensive to pik a QB in rnd 1. 1st round picks are signed for 5 yrs I believe and with the new rookie pay scale it is way less prohibitive than 2-3 years ago. You grab Manziel and he's locked up for 5 years, he sits for 2-3 as the 2nd QB and then u have him as a full time starter for 2 years before he gets a big contract...perfect timing IMO. Rnds 2-7 u can go all the defense u want.

I haven't heard anyone say it was too expensive with respect to salary and contract. There won't be a top QB where Dallas picks. They would have to move up draft spots and that will cost draft picks.

To be clear, I think Manziel has big potential to turn around a franchise and, like he did at A&M, make them "must-watch tv".
I also think that there is no price too high to pay for a QB you are confident will be that franchise QB, the league is all about the QB period. No QB = no team. However, I'm not thinking we should necessarily trade way up to get him specifically. If he dropped for some reason to us or real close to us, I think it would be worth it to grab him or maybe one of the other top QBs in this draft.
I think Jerry would be excited to get Manziel, no Jerry will always sell tickets and merchandize, but Manziel would also open up some marketing and profits for him in a big way, esp if Manziel comes in and wins, wins, and wins some more. Manziel's personality may come off as diva, but from what I can see and hear, he actually seems like a real quality team player, leader, and hard worker. The fact that he has been giving advice to Winston (FSU QB) shows he probably is a those things I think he is and all the glitz and glamor is partial moxie and part marketing and part fun and I wouldn't worry about him as an owner. Its not like he's getting arrested and doing drugs.
Anyway, we'll see, I suspect he'll go top 10 and well out of our league. I'd love to steal him. But regardless, if we're not taking a LONG hard look at all the QBs in this draft we're horribly remiss because Romo is old has a potentially career-threatening injury, Orton is what he is, and someone needs to be waiting in the wings and getting some NFL reps.

Any human being will go all out if there is competition . Romo had 31TDs and 10 ints, and a high 90s passer rating, and multiple 4th qtr game winning drives.
Very few QBs were more productive...certainly not Ryan, Flacco, stafford, Eli, Cutler, Dalton, rG3, and about 15-20 others.

If this team had even an average defense, they are 12-4 and getting a 1st bye.

No team can win with the 32nd ranked defense.

Yeah, I'd probably draft Manziel if given the chance. I might even trade up to get him.

There are several reasons that I would:

1. It is the right time for Dallas to get Romo's eventual successor. Tony has one or two years left and a good, young QB could learn a lot in two years sitting behind Romo. We don't want another 5 years dead-spot where the team is trying and failing to find a leader on offense. No more Quincy Carters, Ryan Leafs, or Drew Hensons please. Just find a way to get Manziel, let him watch Tony for a couple of years and then you have the next decade wrapped up at the QB position. WELL worth a few draft picks.
2. Manziel is a dynamic player. He has "it" in spades. He simply makes good things happen for his team, and really is the heart and soul of the TAMU team that surprised a lot of people in the SEC. They shocked the world for one simple reason. Johnny Football. Whatever offense he is running is going to be exciting and successful, and Manziel will be the undisputed leader of that team. Some people just have a knack for playing football. Manziel does. He loves the game and the game loves him back.
3. The evolution of the QB position in the NFL is moving towards players like Johnny Manziel. We might as well go ahead and get one and be ahead of the curve. He can do anything you want a QB to do with his rare quickness, his speed, and his head for football.
4. The QB position is just so incredibly important. If Manziel plays as well in the pros as he does in college, he is going to be worth numerous #1 draft picks. The impact he will have on a team will be immeasurable. He will convert third down after third down with his scrambling ability, and will be a nightmare for opposing defenses for a decade.
5. He is a Texas boy that is home grown and would be immensely popular with Dallas fans. He has Moxy, charisma, is a natural leader, and would keep Dallas in the forefront of the news for the foreseeable future.

I wouldn't hesitate to nab him given half a chance.

One of the things that I like to see in a college prospect - particularly at QB - is a guy that raised the level of the players around him. Brett Favre is the poster boy for this ability. He took a below average Southern Miss football team and raised them up to a top 20 type team. It wasn't great coaching or an underrated roster that allowed that team to win. It was Brett. Period. Farve willed that team to win so many games that I lost count (I graduated from S. Miss).

Manziel does the same thing for A&M. They had no business beating Alabama last year and they shouldn't have been able to put up as many points against the Crimson Tide as they did this season. But Johnny Football willed that team to victory and almost victory against the best team in college football. Against a team so loaded with future NFL players that it is a wonder they ever lost.

There is no doubt that Johnny lifted that team well above its level and created so many difficulties for the opposition that it didn't matter that the A&M defense couldn't stop anyone from scoring.

I could go on, but I will leave it at that. Manziel is going to make some team a serious contender for the next 10 to 15 years, and I truly hope it is Dallas. I hope they find some way, any way, to get him to Valley Ranch.
