The upside about not bringing in a better backup QB

If you think about it, we are absolutely done if we lose Romo regardless. If we have Moore as a backup, we are guaranteed to be in the top 5 pick. You would hope Moore could do better, but it gives us better odds to build this team and find Romo's successor. Hey, i'm just being optimistic.

If Romo is going to miss the entire year, like last year, I'm absolutely with you. Chances are though, he'll miss 3-5 games, having a good backup could be the difference between playoffs and no playoffs in that scenario.

Correct...worst case scenario is 8-8

Most teams are done if they lose their starting QB for any amount of time. We were foolish not to bring in competition for Moore, but I'm really interested to see how he handles this QB2 role. I think there's a decent chance he does a good job with it. I just don't want to be betting the season on it.

You sound just like the owner's son.

"This was something that we discussed ad nauseam in the offseason in terms of the direction we wanted to go at the quarterback position. Obviously, based on the successes you have and we had a lot of confidence in Kellen, and based on what happened in the draft could have changed our thoughts. But at the end of the day, it's hard to develop these guys if you don't let them practice and get reps.

"So if you throw another guy, a veteran guy, in there with Kellen and in front of Dak and Showers, then they don't ever get to play. We saw it last year with Cincinnati, great success with AJ [McCarron] and played great when he had to fill in for [Andy] Dalton and had every chance in the world to win that playoff game. It was out of his control, he did what he needed to do, so it's a great model for us.

"We've got to bring these guys along if they're going to continue to improve and our decision just became: Is it Kellen or is it Foles? Is it Kellen or is it 'X'? Is it Kellen or is it 'Y'? And we feel good about the two young guys that are behind them and we want them to get a lot of reps in practice and the preseason."

"At some point, you got to commit your resources to getting your young guys ready or you're always in that mode of older, veteran guys. I think with where Tony is in his career, we're starting that journey and obviously we made a significant pick there with Dak and we obviously like what we've seen in Showers, and we think Kellen is mature beyond his years, so we're comfortable with where we are. At some point you can get too crowded there."

I think he was actually using "significant" to mean Prescott.

Which alone is frightening.

All that Stephen Jones' comment about the QBs did was illustrate exactly what is wrong with this franchise.

They apparently are not stupid to the point that they don't acknowledge problems, but it is simply a head nod. Then as time goes on, the pathological optimism seeps back in and we are exactly where we were when the season ended.

But when the same man that said a few short months ago that getting better at backup QB was the top priority.

What they have done to attack that supposed priority is laughable and pathetic.

It is just more of the same finger crossing and whistling past the graveyard that we have seen for far too long.

They are just victims of circumstance and for a team that apparently loves taking risks, they are disgustingly poor marksmen. No nerve to trade up for Lynch because they might lose pick, but will take a medical redshirt LB and basically put a pick on layaway.

I hate that our intellect is insulted with impunity by the braintrust.

See? We thought at least thought about backup QB! We drafted one! Welp, gotta develop them. By the way, have you seen our new practice facility? How do you like that? Don't forget to stop by the Pro Shop on your way out.

In other words, strap in, cross your fingers and pray for Romo's health.

What basically happened is that they forgot why 2015 was a complete waste and seem content to roll the dice with more of the same garbage because they lacked the nerve to attack the problem head on.

Like everything else, it takes getting burned more than once for this leadership to finally understand and address a problem.

It took several years for them to finally get it that this team needed an OL.

But that is even dumber to do with the most important position on the football field.

Stephen sounds just like Jerry now. I had small hopes of the front office becoming innovators, but once again they show they will continue to "model" what other franchises are doing to reach success, instead of the countless, lonely hours of studying and hard work to innovate and have others copy you.

Isn't Foles younger than Moore?

I really get the feeling that we are playing for next year. I think we can still do good, but we are doing so many cost saving measures this year (uncharacteristic for us) that makes it seem like we are thinking more about next year, which is sort of depressing.

They have to pay for this OL, so there is the savings rationale.

But they will be sitting in the same situation next April. Only this time they will need to grab a corner, defensive end etc. Then we get another gosh darn our luck and we think Romo can play another four years.

There's no upside to not having a capable backup QB if it means we're done if Romo goes down. The only one's who think there's an upside to it are the fans who look forward to a top 5-10 pick every year.

That's a good point. I was thinking about the Bengals. They have a nice piece in AJ McCarron. I wasn't a big fan of the guy out of college, but he's a serviceable backup. That in my opinion is Prescott's ceiling. I'm hoping he can develop in that type of player. I have a feeling though that if Romo goes down this year and Moore stinks up the joint, Prescott plays the whole year to give him the experience.

Tell what team has a great backup QB.

So that is the sanity life preserver now?

Well, no big deal, everyone has a bad backup situation. That is just life in the NFL.

The difference is the circumstances.

What team has a 30 plus QB coming off multiple injuries with a backup QB situation as bad as ours?

Nice post.

Remember these are the same guys that wouldn't keep 3 QB's on the team, because we had to have a "kickoff specialist" for a few years. Good grief.......
