I'm posting about your inability to use logic, not the NFL's support of breast cancer awareness. How is this flying over your head?

This is not about the NFL. It is NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARNESS MONTH. It just so happens that the NFL has choosen to participate in this.

I am sorry to tell you that it is not I who does not get the point. You don't like it? Fine. Don't watch.

You would do well to just let this go. The NFL is a small part of a much bigger whole. I do, however, find it interesting that while the whole nations is participating in this, only the NFL is being recongnized here. There are, litterally, more participants then I can count but only the NFL is being discussed. Does this not strike you as odd?

Perhaps it suggests that the NFL is reaching people that would not normally be reached by supporting this effort. Clearly there is truth to that last statement but yeah, it's all about me not getting it.

OK. Guilty as charged. Now then, you've proven your point. What can you do about getting the pink shoes off the air?

The NFL looks at it and sees: High Profile Charity. Demographic that we want to appeal to more. Chance for viewership and sales to new demographic.

Bring on the Pink!

And while Faith Hill looks better at it this year, she's no Pink!

Actually, the op was about the NFL's participation in it, all the pink stuff, and hearing about it every game. Comprehension is fundamental...

Seriously, where did I say this. Quote it for me.

Not really, seeing as how this is a Dallas Cowboys fansite...I think it would be odd if there was a thread discussing the NHL's participation.

I haven't once said this isn't a good thing, only that I understand other people's view points. Clearly you are thinking emotionally rather than logically and this is preventing you from absorbing a few simple points.

Good God. Are you this simple or have the mods resorted to trolling?

i agree the NFL could have made more of a contribution by giving all the money the promotion is using straight to the charity....and the pink looks weak

Then they should keep making the QB's wear pink. Considering you can't touch them any longer in this league.

Fair opinion in the OP but one I don't agree with. It's not going to hurt you, or anyone else, to have them doing this for one month. If it's really hurting your feelings that bad to see it then you could always not watch it on TV and simply listen to it on the radio instead.

It hurts the eye, actually.

Iffin my church adopts this too, then my priest might be wearing pink some Sunday.

Now, I don't equate my church with the NFL and the Cowboys. But it's close.
I believe in them.
I grimace to see the look of the NFL and the Cowboys changed just because Roger thought it would be hip or trendy or progressive. There are other ways to support a charity other than to make the NFL's employees and associates look like clowns.
That's all.

Thx to all for disagreeing respectfully.

Based on all your comments, your view point seems to be that I take issue with what the NFL or any other group is doing to support breast cancer awareness. Thus far you have been unable to point out any instance of this and have conveniently ignored evidence to the contrary.

I find it more than mildly amusing that 99.999% of the ppl in here who are complaining about the NFL promoting a charity, are the same ones who trip all over themselves to be the first to post "RIP" in threads concerning ppl they'd never given a whit about prior to.

In all fairness, the NFL did not choose the color. That was done by those who put the whole thing together.

Look at this from another perspective. If the NFL were asked to participate in this program and they said no, how much of a publicity hit would the NFL take then?

It's just good business IMO.

I mentioned this in a thread in the NFL Zone.

It's not about making people aware. You guys need to get past the idea of awareness. People know about breast cancer, as well as most major cancers affecting people. It's simply the name of the charity drive.

It's the Susan G. Komen foundation's annual national push to get donations for breast cancer research. After this month or so passes, they'll go back to their normal charity drive efforts.

The pink items weren't just to "raise awareness." They're being auctioned off to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

You confuse inability with no desire. I have no desire to point out what should be obvious. You try to draw this out into some sort of discussion worthy of point/counter point discussion. It's not. You have no ability to change any of this and I have no desire to see it changed. The fact that you would like to engage in discussion of this, as if it were relevant is of no importance to me.

If you don't like it, don't watch. If you do like, watch. Either way, you can not effect change. It's really as simple as that.

Aha..I missed that. That's good then. It was curious to me that they would spend so much money on these items to "raise awareness" rather than just gift the money to the foundation. That was my main annoyance.

On another note, men get breast cancer, too.

The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2009 about 1,910 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among men in the United States. Breast cancer is about 100 times less common among men than among women. For men, the lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about 1/10th of 1% (1 in 1,000). The number of breast cancer cases in men relative to the population has been fairly stable over the last 30 years.

In 2009, about 440 men will die from breast cancer in the United States.

So 25% of NFL regular season games, this year and in the future, will be pink-themed.

Pink shoes, pink hats, pink goalposts. Every October.

Awesome.

Maybe we can petition the league to become the PFL every October. Yay awareness!!!

How has prostate cancer not come up here? yes, 1/8 women get breast cancer (~40,000 die per year), but 1/6 men get prostate cancer (~30,000 die per year).

prostate cancer awareness month was september and we heard not a peep from the NFL, even though a fair amount of the men playing and ref'ing the games will battle this disease. also, men are notorious for not taking care of their health or talking to others about it. The NFL seems like an ideal target audience to prompt such discussions (much like an earlier poster saw with his wife and daughter - which was a great story and a great example of a campaign having a beneficial impact).

Both of these are two examples of many worthy causes. It's not that any cause is more or less deserving, but we as a society have limited time and resources to devote to these causes. In light of these limited resources, I agree that questioning how the NFL (and society) decides which causes to highlight and fund is a very valid discussion.

All refs and players could wear color coordinated (per the teams that are playing) rubber medical gloves to promote awareness.

From what I heard, a Carolina Panthers player suggested the idea to the NFL. The NFL thought it was a good idea and went with it. There's only a few players per team who wears the pink stuff. Obviously it has affected these players because they don't mind wearing the pink. I don't mind it at all.

However, I hope that this is the last time the NFL does something like this. It is kinda a slippery slope.

I agree with the idea but perhaps they took it a bit too far with how long to do it for. Just shorten it up and it's all good.
