There have been 57 Super Bowl. Thirteen QBs have been on the winning team at least twice. These same 13 have been the winning QB on 36 of the 57 (63%). Also, in 42 of the games (74%) one of these 13 have been a starting QB. Six times both of the starters in the SB have been one of the 13. Some of them have won with rosters that differed quite a lot. At least three have won with different head coaches. Two have won with completely different NFL teams.

Point is the QB matters in the NFL. They matter a lot. That is why they are paid twice as much and more as any of the other players. That is why any college QB that show potential is going to get drafted early regardless of "red flags" in their resume. Many of the draftees end up being disappointments and even "busts." But every teams management is looking for the next "real thing."

Some fans look at stats like this and respond with something like, "Look at Trent Dilfer, yuck yuck." Dilfer stand alone ability as a QB was no where near "elite." He probably is one of the least talented QBs to start a SB. But he had some positives going for him also. His Ravens had a great defense...one of the top 5 or so in the SB era. They have a very good running attack. They had a coach who for that season understood what he had and how to use it. And he had Dilfer who listened to the coaches and managed the game like he was told. He never went rogue and tried to the the super hero QB. He filled his role and was a big part of a team that was at the right time/right place and all the parts worked.

If you can get the "elite" QB then your odds of winning go up. But it can be done sometimes with a Trent Dilfer type if everything else aligns perfectly (rare IMO).
If your point is that they can win a SB with Dak... I agree completely. Hell, the Commanders won a SB with Doug Williams.

Lol ok bud. Whatever makes you feel better about overpaying a QB that needs a team to carry him.

Dak doesn’t give us a chance. He’s not the problem though I admit. His contract is.

Sad though that he was our biggest advantage in the post season and gave the game away to the last pick in the draft who was a rookie.
You’re saying Dak doesn’t give us a chance but he’s not the problem? Lol I got news for you bud, if a QB isn’t giving you a chance they’re a problem and a big problem! Dak gives us a chance. He didn’t play well against Washington, but neither did our defense. It was our defense that made that rookie QB look like an all pro. Our defense pulls the same crap every season, making some scrub or inexperienced QB look great. That rotten egg we laid against Washington wasn’t all Dak’s fault.

Daks skill for what he’s paid to do is the problem.

It’s nearly impossible to win a championship with him as your QB because of his contract.

He requires a lot more then an elite QB.

It’s common sense to anyone who isn’t a Dak homer.

Cooper Rush can win 3 of 4 games with this roster. We need a QB who won’t crumble like Dak did in San Fran.

We could pay Cooper Rush the same amount to crumble in the playoffs.

Dak on his rookie deal playing that style of offense from 2016. Sign me up all day any day. Dak on a 40 million dollar per year deal standing in the pocket waiting for disaster to strike. No thanks.

So...since it always leads to this QB pay/play argument....its been had a thousand times over....

Can I get your solution to the QB pay problem with QBs and their Agents able to bend FO's over the barrel without someone saying a solutions thread was had a month ago? This QB pay debate is every single day, non-stop.

What is the solution? Because FO's might be changing a little...but it doesnt look like FO's agree with Couch GM's on the "dont pay non-elite QB" argument. Does the League need to step in? Because it doesnt look like FO's want to deal with losing a locker room because the FO is trying to find Brady while other players careers are wasted during the search.

Whats the solution? Just hard, rigid "We aint paying you more than 15% because you aint Tommy"?

Not sure if you watched those QBs play but they stepped up their game in the playoffs.
Of course Dilfer rode the defense but the others performed well. Sure having a strong defense helps and it's a team game but Foles was playing like a possessed man and Eli was just in a zone. Those SB winning QBs were making plays and not turning the ball over. Dak is too inconsistent and can only find his zone against the NFC east.
exactly, the key with dilfer , was he didnt turn ball over, or make mistakes.
They got rid of him, and got a better passer, and they didnt see the SB again for a decade.

Foles and eli both played really good in playoffs and SB. Dak is opposite, plays good most games during season, then goes flat in playoffs, against good teams.
TB was a bad team, so he looked good against them.
And the thing people tend to forget is to have good coaching too, if only for that playoff run.

I dont care what they think. I’m right.

Don’t forget. The NFL is a business.

Being a bad team is not good for business.

Dallas has nothing in the Dak Prescott era. Not even a NFC title game. His mediocrity has been great for the bottom line. Business.

My point is that if things align just right a team can win with a journeyman type QB. It has happened before and will happen again. But stats tell us that the chances are much better if you have a top quality (elite) QB. Will Prescott win one??? Where does he rate as an NFL QB? I will leave those last two questions for another time and another thread.

What about when these things cross each other ? Tom Brady would have 1/2 of his Super Bowls without Belichek.
Would Troy have one without Jimmy , Mike and Emmitt ?

People always point to Dilfer about being able to win with an average to below average QB. The guy played on pretty much the best defense in NFL history. They allowed something like 10 points a game that season and allowed a singular TD in the playoffs. Any of us could've QB'd that team to a super bowl victory. We don't have that kind of defense, no team currently does. So we must rely on our QB more...and you see the results.
Agreed. The league will never see a defense like that again most likely.

These are good points and , this is where Dak is situated right now.
I feel our D is getting to be one of the top ones and can help, if Big Mac manages to make running effective , then Dak has to manage the game mostly and be ready to push the envelope at times , be it with his throws or legs to make some good things happen , we should be getting into playoffs and can be distruptive. Thats all one can hope.
I am not ready to say we are in a ravens situation. Our defense got exposed last year as there was more film on it. we struggled against the run and it showed. there are several holes on defense that need addressed. the offense is in better shape, although RB, despite everything is a question mark until we see Pollard after his injury (or see what draft gives us). Steele is coming off injury and LG spot is a question mark with departure of McGovern. TE may have potential, but that's all it is today.

but what I like to see, is for us not to fade in the last part of the season, but to elevate. that's been the trend on one side, or the other of the team sometimes both falling apart and fading.

The problem is if you don’t pay them elite money you’ll be stuck with a castoff and no matter how good a team you build around them you’re not going to win consistently until you finally decide to pay a good QB. Most of the QBs that are getting paid $40 million per or more aren’t elite QBs. Jalen Hurts isn’t an elite QB and he’s being paid over $50 million per. That’s the way QB salaries are today and you have to deal with it. If you owned the Cowboys they would be stuck with a complete scrub at QB. The team would be changing QBs every single season under you.
there are 15 QBs that make 30M and more. that's about half the league. and Burrow, Lawrence, Herbert haven't been given new contracts yet. that low end will move higher and more QBs are in that range in the next couple of years.

there are 15 QBs that make 30M or more. Lawrence, Herbert, Burrow, Jackson coming up for contract redo and that average and total number of QBs at those ranges is only going to go up. Its the NFL QB market. get used to it.

and why is Dak's contract an issue? two years ago his cap hit was 17M, against a 183M cap. last year 19M against a 208M cap. so its not handicapping the team. so this Dak is handicapping our cap is total BS. we had 20M on the cap last year and CHOSE not to spend it. we had cooper on the team and still under the cap we CHOSE to trade him for a 5th. Philly just handed Hurts a 51M average contract. his cap hit this year is 6M. and subsequently over the next 4 years less than 10% of the cap.

so which FA did we want and couldn't sign because of cap issues? btw, both Lamb and Diggs are in contract negotiations.

this is total BS on your part and you keep perpetuating something you have no understanding of. you have no idea how the cap works.

Having Eli and Stafford in there just makes you look silly. I’m fact it blows up in your face and laughing emojis. Eli’s 2007 SB saw one of the best games of his career and in most historical markers at the end of the season and playoffs. 2011, stat wise, was one of his best years snd he was top 4 stat wise. Stafford always had the tools, athleticism and arm and despite being on the Lions was the fastest QB to 40000 yards and had a 90.1 career passer rating. At least these guys made it through some great years to a SB to win. I’m still waiting on ours despite stacked teams. Pick your yo-yo argument…trophies or stats or both. You change with the wind. Not the best ever but not Brad Johnson, etc
Agreed. I love how these posters treat Eli like he was some kind of bum when most likely he will be in Canton someday. Flacco was also an excellent QB in is prime - and he could perform under pressure when it mattered. Foles was also better than Boys fans like to admit, and was unbelievable under pressure when they won their SB. Seems to me the point is that if you aren't going to be a top tier QB, you'd better have the ability to rise to the occasion when you're in the pressure cooker of the playoffs.

why do you have an issue with the pay? Tannehill is making 30M a year....

and his contract has been proven several times over that is not the issue with the cap.

its common sense to anyone who is not a Dak hater that the cap numbers are irrelevant. your opinion of what his worth is vs. impact on the cap are two completely separate issues.

Cooper rush led us to the 22nd ranked offense and worse in many categories. Defense won the games for us. including a 100 yard passing game against Rams which defense gifted the offense 9 points. you can't see the forest because of the trees. we could pay cooper rush and never make the playoffs and end up with a top 5 pick. if that's your argument, then you got something.

his cap hit two years ago was 17M. his cap hit last year was 19M. the argument doesn't make sense.

also, top 15 QBs in the league in pay are averaging 30M and above, with Tannehill at 30M. that's the NFL for you. get used to it.

I find it funny. we complain about losing in the playoffs and we can't win. then we win and its not because we played good. its because the other team was bad.!!!! its a lose lose situation for Dak. if we win, the other team was bad. if we lose, its Dak's fault.

most likely? he may never get there. despite the rings. Flacco has as many rings. should he be considered for Canton?

Eli Manning played great football in both the 2007 and 2011 seasons

2007 - 4 games, 6 TDs to 1 INT, 95.7 rating
2011 - 4 games, 9 TDs, to 1 INT, 103.3

It wasn't just his defense. The guy just played great football.
In a similar vein, Flacco in the 2012 playoffs: 4-0, 11 TDs, 0 Ints, 117 rating. Flacco had a period in his prime where he was an excellent QB.
