How many 4th round picks become starters on average? Serious question. Is it a number > 20%?

I heard it was less than like 10 out of 100 become NFL starters. If true giving up a 4th is not the end of the world..
Yeah I don't have exact data on how many games they start, but the odds are not great for 4th rounders. The numbers move year to year but typically only about 10% of 4th round picks actually sign 2nd contracts with the team that drafted them. More than half of them are out of the league completely within 4 years. Really a success for a 4th round pick could be a guy who solid rotational player based on the average.

There are certainly some gems mixed in there, but overall the odds are against you once you get through the first two rounds for most drafts.

We paid the most for the QB who has done the least from that ‘21 draft.

Lance has reportedly shown little to nothing in practice so far in his time in Dallas.

We won’t have a 4th round pick in a draft where gurus are saying there will be plenty of 3rd round grades available in the 4th rd.

To put a cherry on top, we’re probably going to end up losing Lance for nothing after this season.

Shambolic front office.

I have no agenda when it comes to Dak so I am posting this simply to be informative.

I am also not sold on Lance and so far, I have not seen anything from him that gives me optimism that he's a future franchise quarterback.

That said, I am not pessimistic about him either. I think he just hasn't had time to show if he can be that guy.

The Cowboys traded for Lance for two reasons. One, to provide a fallback option should they lose Dak for the year to injury and two, to provide leverage and a backup plan for the team should Dak hold out or the Cowboys move on from him at some point.

A third reason is this also gave the Cowboys a top draft pick quarterback they could coach and trade later if necessary.

Now, on to the biggest point.

Those guys you listed have a LOT more game starts under their belt, so of course they are worth less trade-wise.

Those other players were replaced because they were given the starter job and after MANY games they proved they could not do it, at least for their respective teams.

Lance on the other hand, was given the starter job, then soon after was lost for the season.

His replacement came in and played very well, and that is why the 49ers moved on from him rather than because he couldn't do the job.

The 49ers smartly figured they could get more for him immediately rather than waiting it out another season.

I don't know if Lance is going to ever become a franchise quarterback and I don't know if Dak is going to be here in 2025 or for the next several years.

What I do know is that unlike 99% of the moves the Cowboys have made with regards to quarterbacks since drafting Aikman, trading a 4th for Lance last season was one of their better moves in my opinion regardless of how it works out.

We have too many holes and not enough draft picks. Stay out of this thread if you don't want to discuss it.
I agree with you on that, but the major issue isn't the lack of a 4th round pick. It's Jerry completely sitting out free agency and failing to even bring in some 3rd tier free agents to not have to rely completely on hitting home runs on day 2 and 3 of the draft. Completely inexcusable that he's taken a pretty good roster and basically set it up for failure in 2024.

Very fair take. Interesting the ones bashing this the hardest are the most obstinate dak defenders. Its weird.

Not a post I'll be planning to nominate for "April 2024 OP Displaying Best Critical Thought," nor "April 2024 OP Relying on Strongest Source."

  • We "paid the most" for reason... reason that, despite how obvious it is, you notably choose to not mention, balance not being a priority evidently.

  • He has "done the least" for reason... reason that, despite how obvious it is, you notably choose to not mention, balance not being a priority evidently.

  • He has "shown little to nothing in practice so far in his time in Dallas" for reason... you know the rest.

  • Oh by the way... who is that reporter and what is his/her credentials for that conclusion... oh, never mind... balance not being a priority, it's not important... a person establishes how seriously to take his/her conclusions by virtue of their interest in balance after all.

  • I'm certain the same reporter has persuaded you that s/he has insight that counters what Stephen has expressed more than once, ie, Dak is the priority, but that eventually there will be negotiations centered on extending the guy they just gave up a 4th round pick for.

Won't be surprised if "the other" Connor McGovern (ex Jets, ex Broncos) gets signed this week by some team.

It was this same week last season that that happened, after all.

There's just no getting around it, you're going to have to identify and sign some good-enough free agents still yet, no question.

So I provide you a video of a podcast literally being taped in The Star by three reporters who cover the team, two very closely, who go on record that they do not hear anything good about Trey Lance behind the scenes from coaches/staff unlike the whispers they heard about Romo/Dak in their early years and you totally discount it? What exactly is your read of what they said in that clip?
None said what you claimed ........ period.

Wilson and Jones have proven more, but they've only proven that they are not NFL starters.

I would only compare the Lance trade to the Fields trade-- and yes, PIT got a better deal because Fields is probably the better player.

That said, the trade value is less expensive because Fields' second contract should be significantly more expensive than Lance's.
