Nobody is trading for cooper
If you're asserting that for March 2, 2024, yes, we're basically agreed on that.

If you're asserting that for August 2, 2024, when some teams are either beginning to realize that Plan A for their QB position isn't working out, or just as typically, Plan A went down with an injury...

No, he will have trade value to some degree at that time. It happens every year. The question is only how much comparable talent other teams are putting on the market, if any.

Trey Lance was recovering from a major knee injury. Purdy won the job and was a better fit to their offensive scheme than Lance. It was the right choice for the 49ers, Purdy has taken them to an NFC title game and Superbowl in 2 years. Far more success than Dak has since joining the league.

No franchise would have kept their 1st round QB as a backup after deciding to go with the other guy. The RG3 v Kirk Cousins dilemma.
Did they really decide on Purdy? Why were they trying to get Brady?

Shanahan is trying to win a Super Bowl so that’s why they tried to get Brady. Much better chance winning a Super Bowl with him than a second year QB. I read that Shanahan told Purdy he would sit for a season if they get Brady.

At the very least, since Dak doesn’t play in preseason this should mean a lot of preseason snaps for Lance.
It will be Lance and Rush the entire preseason. I’m thinking Lance will probably get a few more preseason reps than Rush. They’re going to give them every chance to win the backup job.

So they settled for Purdy.

They didn’t settle Purdy has played well but Brady is the goat and gave them the best chance at winning a SB.
That explains the trade. With Brady, Trance would have been 4th string.

They already knew Brady wasn’t interested when they traded Lance. The trade was made during August in training camp. Lance would have been the third QB behind Purdy and Darnold.

That does not mean the Niners had to trade him.
Especially after everything they gave up to get him. They were more than happy to get him off their roster.

Add he was still the 3rd QB in Dallas.
SF had a competition for the starting job last summer and Lance ended up the third QB. He wasn’t happy and SF realized it was a mistake drafting him. He was the third QB with the Cowboys because he arrived in August and didn’t know our offense. This is why he didn’t play in preseason. He expected to be our third QB in 2023 when the trade was made.

They wanted a veteran QB behind Purdy and Lance was coming from a major injury. The decision was to move on from Lance and move forward with Purdy. No way they would have Lance making 9M and Purdy on a minimum salary. These decisions go beyond performance on the field.
Lance was not making $9 million per season. And Darnold made more than Purdy and Lance combined last year. It has everything to do with performance on the field. “Phenoms” come cheap in the NFL. They can be worth a 4th round draft pick to a really bad GM. Trey Lance’s fall from grace is all that is remarkable about him. Zach Wilson, considered a bust, went on IR each of his three seasons, but still managed to produce infinitely more than Trey Lance playing for the New York Jets. Lance has done next to nothing despite being on the rosters of the 49ers and Cowboys. Trey Lance will not be on the Cowboys’ roster when the season starts. He is not an NFL caliber player.

There is no trade value for a #3 scrub team QB. Why is that so hard to understand?

They obviously didn’t blame his injury for his disappointing play. To move on from him as quick as they did with all they gave up to draft him tells me they saw no hope in him. Washington didn’t give up on RG3 that quick.
He was anointed the starter 2 years ago. Lance had a 2-2 record with 6TDs and 4Ints, those aren't terrible numbers for a guy starting his first 4 games. In contrast t Purdy went undefeated in the regular season and a game away from the Superbowl. Purdy was the right guy, if Purdy want in the picture Lance would have earned the his job back.

Year 3 of his rookie contract Lance was making 9M. Lance was tracking to Daks numbers with 6-4 ints in 4 games in 2022.. over the course of 16 game that's 24 TDs and 16ints season. Dak #s in 2022 23Tds 15 ints

He ended up the third QB behind Sam Darnald after a QB competition. If the 49ers thought Lance would develop they would have kept him. They would’ve kept him as a precaution in the event Purdy was just a flash in the pan.

If Purdy was the right guy, why reach out to Brady? We go and get a more experienced QB and push Trance down to 3.
