Just looking at replacing talent, which is what GMs do.

'07 Offseason

Ken Hamlin replaced Pat Watkins
Leonard Davis replaced Marco Rivera
Nick Folk replaced Gramatica/Vanderjagt
Anthony Spencer replaced Bobby Carpenter

'08 Offseason

Zach Thomas/Bobby Carpenter replace Akin Ayodele
Adam Jones replaces Jacques Reeves
Mike Jenkins replaces Nate Jones
Orlando Scandrick replaces Evan Oglesby
Felix Jones replaces Julius Jones
Martellus Bennett replaces Anthony Fasano

The only move that I can say is a borderline "downgrade" so far is replacing Fasano with Bennett, but obviously the front office doesn't think that's a downgrade at all. Edit: To clarify, long-term I don't think it's a downgrade, but short-term I think it definitely is.

What do you think? Yay or nay? Not too shabby at all, if you ask me.

I like the changes.

07 looks to be pretty good.
08 looks good on paper, we will see.

I'm far from a Parcells apologist and am glad he's no longer the coach, but the man did a tremendous job reshaping the organization. To say he created a "mess" is a joke.

Parcells' drafts were overall strong. One of the contentions is that his two biggest hits in TNew and DWare were not his choices.

FA was a completely different story - most of the people he brought in did not workout and drained the cap.

The only obvious upgrades are Davis, hamlin and Jenkins. Again, Davis is making 7M/year as a guard and Jenkins is a No.1 and replacing a seventh-rounder. The true gem is Hamlin. The rest is either a wash or "do not know yet".

I would be picky & question Spencer over Carpenter when I feel Spencer was drafted to replace Greg Ellis but he returned healthy enough to make the pro bowl. Spencer still a good pick.

Gotta agree Jerry has should be given credit for doing a pretty good job since Parcells & then Ireland left. He replaced 2 questionable positions (FS & RG) in 07 with 2 players who went to the pro bowl. Our limited cap space in 08 only allowed us to sign ILB Zach Thomas--should be a big upgrade over the recently traded Akin Ayodele. Drafted 2 quality RBs & 2 quality CBs which should provide serious upgrades at 2 needed positions; added a TE with better potential as WR/TE after getting rid of questionable TE Fasano; also drafted DE/OLB to aid rushing game (possible move to ILB?). Traded a 4th for a quality CB who should also provide ST help in return game if/when reinstated. Only downer is we didn't get a WR we needed. But could that come later in preseason season?

Yeah, but he would have never pursuied Davis or Hamlin and he wouldn't have even thought about bringing in pacman. He upgraded the talent, but he wpuldn't have made the kind of moves to put us over the top. Parcells always wanted to be the one to take the credit. It was his guys or else. I'm glad he's gone, were much better off.

I love what Jerry has done with this team. People still want to bring up the 3 5-11 seasons Jerry had before Parcells but I for one think he is one of the best GMs in the NFL right now.

The thing was that he had a bunch of patsy coaches in here, ran a shotty front office, where it was clear that he was in charge of drafting.

Not a lot of draft picks from the mid to late 1990's really managed to help this team very much.

Some of the moves he made looked terrible in hindsight. The Galloway trade comes to mind, but then again let's not forget Aikman wasn't supposed to get hit and forget who he was.

So Jerry doesn't get credit for signing Davis (described as a bust by some but who went rightfully voted to the pro bowl) cause he's paying him $7M. You obviously not paying attention to escalating salaries the last 2 years.

And Nick Folk is still in doubt? Only if you waiting for 3-5 years to pass before assigning a grade. In that case, let's cut Romo & resign Bledsoe who has a longer body of time to back up his play.

Get real.

I think Parcells got this organization to focus on football again....got the players to let go of a losing mentality...but let's review.....

Cowboy Pro Bowler from the 2007/2008 season
  • Roy Williams - drafted by Jerry
  • Andre Gurode - drafted by Jerry
  • Leonard Davis - signed by Jerry after Bill left
  • Flozell Adams - drafted by Jerry
  • Nick Folk - drafted by Jerry in the 6th round and made it as a rookie kicker last year
  • Terrell Owens - signed by Jerry in Bill's last year...AGAINST Bills wishes.....but Bill was the one who could not wait to trade Joey Galloway for Keyshawn Johnson..Key was everage in Dallas...Galloway had a career year in Tampa
  • Ken Hamlin - signed buy Jerry after Bill Parcells left
  • Greg Ellis - drafted by Jerry...made his first Pro Bowl....AFTER Parcells left

  • Tony Romo - UNDRAFTED....Cowboys signed him off the street at the urging of Sean Payton because he went to the same school Sean Payton went to...would have been cut if Quincy Carter not flaked out that offseason because Romo was the #4 QB...and teams do NOT carry 4 QBs
  • Terrance Newman - Bill Parcellls is on record saying he wanted Dewayne Robertson, who went to the Jets...Terrance Newman made the Pro Bowl for the first time this year..which by the way was the first time he was not being coached by Bill,,,toss up
  • Jason Witten - all Parcells
  • Marion Barber - all Parcells
  • DeMarcus Ware - this was all Jerry. Bill Parcells wanted Marcus Spears at #11. He thought they could get Ware with the other 1st round pick at 20. Had Parcells gotten his way DeMarcus Ware would not even be a Cowboy because he would not have lasted until #20.

Now lets review Parcells first day picks as Cowboy head coach

2003
  • 1st round - Terrance Newman...CB.... (see above comments)
  • 2nd round - Al Johnson...C....started on year in Dallas...only lasted 3...was average
  • 3rd round - Jason Witten...TE..has been a beast

2004
Parcells traded out of the 1st round to pick up 2 1st round picks the following year...passing up on Steven Jackson to draft....
  • 2nd round - Julius Jones...had 1 1,000 yard season in Dallas....average
  • 2nd round - Jacob Rogers....LT...never played a down for Dallas...actually never played a down for anybody...currently out of football..there were scouts on draft day standing on top of the table screaming for Parcells not to draft this guy...Parcells would not listen becaue Rogers played for a "big time program"
  • 3rd round - Stephen Peterman...G....never played a down in Dallas

2005
  • 1st round - Demarcus Ware..OLB... (see above comments on who Parcells wanted)
  • 1st round - Marcus Spears.....DE....he has 3 career sacks
  • 2nd round - Kevin Burnett...LBer....has never started in Dallas
  • 3rd round - no pick

2006 (this entire class is looking VERY VERY shaky)
  • 1st round...Bobby Carpenter....OLB....has played nothing but special teams in Dallas
  • 2nd round...Anthony Fasano...TE...just traded for a 4th round pick on draft day
  • 3rd round....Jason Hatcher....DE....is a situational pass rusher...but I think he is gonna be solid

Don't believe everything ESPN tells you...this is the real...like I said, he is respnsible for Witten and Barber...those are great gets...but Parcells drafted more busts than ballers

We don't re-sign Hamlin, Thomas, MBIII, or Kosier. Williams must be retiring (since he'll be under contract). Glenn is done (which is probable) and T.O. gets worn down (which isn't probable). Adam Jones gets in trouble again (which is probable), and Bennet gains too much weight (unlikely). On top of all of this, we don't sign a single free agent or draft any players in 2009.

the coaching changes in the two off-seasons.

I think that impacts as much as the player talent changes. And overall, I think that has been good, too, but it's untested so far. I think we all think that basically a coach is a coach.

But BP really did a pretty good job of bringing in good coaches, including the departed Sean Payton, who now is in NO, with several of our other departed position coaches before BP took the rest south. I had clearly thought that Peyton was our next HC, I really did.

So a good number of good coaches now thru the revolving door in 2-3 years. That's not so easy to replace.

We've now gone thru the rest of the coaching changes this off-season with the herd of coaches that Parcells siphoined off for the front office and on-field positions there in S. Florida.

So the jury is out there..IMO.

It remains to be seen just how really positive that change turns out to be. Last year seemed to be an improvement because even with all the change with Phillips coming in, continuity existed last year with most of the coaches, especially with Sparano remaining and helping Garrett as much as he did.

Sparano is now gone. We have no idea how much that is going to affect this offense. Yet.

I beleive Garrett did very well, but Sparano was a rock offensively and really was a de-facto 2nd OC on the offensive side supporting Garrett, so we will see how Garrett operates more on his own now and how much continuity we see with Houck in the OL capacity, now.

And while I like Hudson Houck as OL coach, admittedly, he's been let go now twice in the last 4 years(both times by BP) and the DBs with Campo (himself coming off his 3rd. team in the last 6 years) are really going to come under some scrutiny as the season goes on.

Both of those units are going to be under a lot of pressure to perfom better than last year, we all know, not to mention the new DL and LBers coaches, too.

I'm thinking we need to be patient to see if all this jells well this year or if we start to see some glitches here and there compared to last year. I'm figuring there will be.

While I like both Houck and Campo, they have been in the league a long while and other teams coordinators are well acquainted with their prefered schemes and systems and will have a good feel as to how to attack what they like to do here in Dallas.

This could translate into problems with both sides of the ball at times.

Both of those coaches took some heat when they were last here with their respective units not performing well by the time they moved on from Dallas.

So while I like the players we have been able to bring in..and I nod in agreement with your list of improved players..the jury is still out after this last blood-letting of the coaches.

Coaching changes often take a little more time to get synchronized and comfortable and really few of these guys have worked together before as an overall group.

We'll see.

On a serious note, pretty good upgrades although people will still complain.

fixed for you bp.

people will complain for a variety of resaons.
1. it's jerry jones, they hate him, so all moves are bad.
2. jones didn't pick up their favorite player so he's evil
3. jones picked up someone they hate so he's more evil
4. general bitterness.

00000 - one of those threads mired in fantasyland where they can quickly work to turn the tide that's in favor of jones by illustrating only the negatives that *could* happen in 09. i swear to god some people just are not happy unless they're doing eyore impersonations.

sigh.

I actually agree, but you have to give Parcells a lot of credit for pointing Jerry in the right direction.
