One wonders if G.Bay coaching maybe noticed it happening several times, as they were watching game tape during the week, and alerted Blandino and crew to look at it...............that call, as some have stated hasnt been seen for decades......it had to get on the ref's radar in some way or form.

This is literally the first time I've ever seen it called in my 25+ years of watching football.

Amazing.

How did the Cowboys get called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for a huddle?

It was a penalty that left most viewers saying “what?” and most Dallas Cowboys fans saying something far more animated. In the first quarter of Sunday’s mega-playoff matchup with the Green Bay Packers, Cowboys wide receiver Brice Butler was called for a rare unsportsmanlike conduct foul that stopped an encouraging Dallas drive and — if Twitter is any indication — a vast majority of football fans didn’t even know existed.

Butler was flagged for being in the Cowboys huddle and then not participating in the next play — a rulebook no-no. He and fellow receiver Cole Beasley seemed confused about who was going to be on the field: Butler ran to the huddle, Beasley went back toward the sideline and then was apparently told to go back and replace Butler, who jogged off the field before the play — a Dak Prescott to Terrance Williams pass that went for 22 yards and put Dallas inside the Packers’ red zone.

So, illegal substitution or too many men on the field, right? That’s what you see 99 percent of the time when a player who’s not supposed to be on the field is caught. Unsportsmanlike conduct has a far different connotation. When you think of it, you think of that Odell Beckham/Josh Norman game or something committed every few minutes by the Bengals. Dirty, dangerous play. This was anything but. Why was this unsportsmanlike? Fifteen yards, just because a guy happened to run inside the numbers? Throwing in the 22 yards that was gained on the play, the penalty was essentially for 37 yards and the Cowboys went from a red-zone chance to out of field-goal range (they’d end up punting). What’s the deal?

Deception, or at least the threat of it. Here’s a special addendum to the rule (Rule 5, Section 2, Article 5) that explains its purpose. (It’s like the NFL knew how confusing the rule is and put this up to quell the Googling masses after such a foul was called.)

Note: The intent of the rule is to prevent teams from using simulated substitutions to confuse an opponent, while still permitting a player (or players) to enter and leave without participating in a play in certain situations, such as a change in a coaching decision on fourth down, even though he has approached the huddle and communicated with a teammate.

Basically: You can’t be in the huddle and not be in the play because it could leave the defense believing it needs to cover a player to cover who’s not on the field and thus would be, you know, pretty hard to cover.

This play didn’t look like deception. It appeared to be straight confusion. But there’s no such room for interpretation in the NFL rulebook. (Unless it’s a Dez Bryant catch.)

I believe they made the proper call. .

No, they didn't. There was no Huddle and Butler never communicated with anyone one the field.

Rule

"If [a player] approaches the huddle and communicates with a teammate, he is required to participate in at least one play before being withdrawn," Rule 5, Section 2, Article 5 says. "Violations of this rule may be penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct."

This is JG's 7th season as the HC and 10th season as coach for the Boys. He should know that this could be called. It's his job to know and not chance it.

It was a dumb call but dumber on our part for even being in that situation.
Exactly.

I'm on EVERYONE'S side in this thread......BUT.....

The D still can't give up 34 at home on a week's rest to a team with a WR playing RB and no Jordy. It's embarrassing, like it has been for more than a decade.
Agree about the D, but getting jobbed by the refs like on that Butler Unsportsmanlike takes away the Cowboy's ability to control the clock and keep Rodgers off the field.

Don't buy that it would make a difference, but I like where your head's at.

Yep....fix the front 7 next year and we'll be ready to roll. We might win 10 or 11 games but we need some junk yard dogs in that front 7. They were meek pups tonight and got beat. HELD and beat.

Like embarrassed beat. It was bad. Made DLaw and co. look like UDFA's.

That wording leaves too much in the referees hands. That may in there is complete crap and while it may have been within their right by the rules, it seems wrong. There's no way that people who have been around football, watched football, or played football for years and years have never seen that penalty if it's not at best an awful call. That penalty has to at minimum happen several times a week and for it to not be seen, reeks something awful.
All I know is that I have been watching nfl football for about 55 years and don't recall ever having seen that penalty called one time before today. I would be interested in knowing how many times that penalty has ever been called in the history of the game.

Technically by the rule book, it was the correct call I believe. But it's sort of like traveling in the NBA, unless it's egregious, they usually don't call it. And it definitely was not egregious. The refs had a stick in their bum today for some reason.

That's the thing. There is no huddle and nothing to evidence that Butler communicated with any teammate at all, let alone in the non-existence huddle if that is who is meant by teammate.

DLaw is, perhaps, the most disappointing player of the season.

Just invisible and ineffective.

I would say "bust" but nothing was every really expected of him anyway. Has no bend and can't be physical enough. Total loss.

1984. How many players on our team were ALIVE the last time it was called? And they break it out in a playoff game. I'm guessing one of the refs had just read it in the rulebook and said this is cool and never used.
What is 1984?
