USA Today: It's time to admit Cowboys' Jason Garrett grew into a great head coach

I think he's better than I expected honestly, but he's not great yet I'm still choking on the the playoff debacle last year.
Denver sucks but this still could be considered a trap game coming off a big win going to play at altitude.
this will be another big step in the right direction if we pull off a win.

While that might be a good indication in itself, why not wait until the year is in before deciding anything on the basis of one game? The difficult schedule this year will be an excellent measuring stick to gauge this team's head coaching acumen. Seems pretty fair to me. Oh, yeah and Denver doesn't suck at all, especially with that defense. They're also extremely tough to beat at home.

Guess I'm just one to want really convincing proof before deciding if a coach is worthy or not. In that Monday ball game, I thought both teams played pretty admirably and deserved to win. It's really tough to come from behind the way SD did, though. It could easily have gone either way. Great game, as it turned out.

I could consider Garrett being great last year due to what the team was able to accomplish with a rookie QB/RB and a no name defense.
Just feel like until the team has similar back to back great years, he falls in the "Good/very Good" range when looking at his last 2-3 years as a whole.

Hard to count 2015 when your franchise QB goes down and the GM gets a bust and a past his prime QB as your backups.

Great, pump the brakes, good OK, he has moved just past adequate IMHO. I do not think he is as bad as others on here yell about. He is below Jimmy and Tom but I put him over the Tuna and every other stiff that has filled the HC job since Jimmy left. I give him credit for managing a team with an attention craving ego maniac owner. Think of all the coaches everyone of the posters here wanted I do not think any of them would have made it through their 1st contract.

I agree that coaches are gauged by Championships. Is Garrett great? No. I do think he is a good coach and has his team moving towards that championship and it will fall to him to get them over the hump.

Save the praise - "great" is actually hyperbole - for when he actually accomplishes something in the playoffs, not after one game into the current season.

Garrett is always looking to improve, and studies the best coaching leaders from several sports.
His practices run like a swiss watch and the goals and requirments of all players and coaches under him are clear and concise.

He's come a long way...but "great" would have to include live game-flow and management.
Though he HAS improved in that area too, he's not there yet.

He didn't have his team prepared after a home field bye and one win from NFC championship against a depleted Green Bay team. We saw what Atlanta did to GB the following week.

Garrett is found wanting in crunch time.

Exactly. It's comical that some want to anoint him a great coach and he has what, 1 playoff win in 6 full years?

He's basically Marvin Lewis at this point. In fact, Garrett's start is eerily similar. A couple good seasons, a turd season and a few mediocre seasons.

Before I admit I was wrong about Garrett, I'd like to finally see some real playoff success.
