Kickers should kickoff, I be daamed if I would bring a "Kick off specialist" Does anyone else think this 'specialist" title is ridiculous? Men play football, kick the freakin kickoffs as well.
so why cannot a kicker and a punter be the same guy?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it Vanderjagt that kicked a couple of pretty long FGs in the snow in Denver or somewhere a few years ago ?? I know that's an isolated incident but shows he can kick outdoors.

It is in Denver though. Higher elevation...

How is there a better kicker in the NFL, than a guy who has the HIGHEST CAREER FG percentage in NFL HISTORY? Tell me one other kicker that at one time has hit 42 straight FG's?

Forget about Vanderjagt's one miss in Pitttsburg, or Vinateri's "clutch" performance on the Patriots first Super Bowl run. Before we give Vinateri so much credit for his game winning kicks in the Super Bowls. People forget, that he missed 2 FG's within 40 yards against the Panthers in 2003 before he hit the game winner there.

Vanderjagt - 87.5% CAREER FG kicker.
Vinatieri - 81.9% career FG kicker

Vanderjagt - 89.4 % FG's inside 50 yards.
Vianteri - 83.8% of his FG's inside 50 yards

Vanderjagt - 67% of his FG's over 50 yards
Vinatieri - 47% of his FG's over 50 yards.

Now tell me again who is the best kicker in the NFL?

I don't think you can just "discount" playoff kicks when comparing the two. It's like saying, "Let's discount Troy's three Super Bowls for a sec..." Can't do it.

For that reason, Vinatieri -- and Vinatieri, alone -- is the league's best kicker IMO. Probably in history, for that matter.

With that said, we're on the verge of signing the most accurate kicker in history and the guy I consider to be the second best kicker in today's game, when it's all said and done.

I agree with Danny White on this one. I don't feel the need to apologize for signing the most accurate kicker in history. I certainly don't feel like we're losing out here. As far as I'm concerned, if we do land him, the only team that can thumb its nose at us when it comes to kickers is the Colts.

Someone from this forum should print out a picture of Vandy and post it in every bar and liquour store, giving the clerk strict orders to not serve him no matter the circumstance.

Im a big fan of baseball and there is in baseball people that put stocj into hitter being able to hit in 'clutch' situations. Basically the whole signifigance of 'clutch' was debunked.

Basically a statistical analysis of batters performance in close games seperated by 2 runs or less and in late innings demonstrated that actual performance did not signifigantly deviate from regular norms. Basically you are dealing with a small sample size.

It really looks like it is much the same in the NFL concerning kickers. Many people point to Vinaterris success in the super bowl but ignore the misses as in the Carolina game or the Denver game. I would be willing to bet that if you were to look at the actual stats of his kicking in the fourth quarter where the score is within a TD or less and the stats would be very near his averages.

Bottomline is that if you are a smart man, you put the 'clutch' factor far behind overall percentages when making a decision. Vanderjagt is clearly the better kicker when it comes to sheer percentages by a fairly significant margin.

For what it's worth, Fox Sports Southwest was reporting that Vanderjagt and his agent are staying in Dallas over the night to hammer out a deal. Not exactly breaking news, but worth posting...

If this is true then there's no way JJ let's him leave here w/out a deal especially with the extra cap room we have now from LA's release. I for one love this signing. Would of rather had AV but MV is a very close second.

Shhhhh ---- listen. Can U hear it?

Shhhhh ---- sniff. Can u smell it?

We're getting awfully close!:D

Interesting points, and I can't disagree at all.

Viniateri, and it isn't close. Vandy's % would drop greatly if he had to kick in New Englands weather as often as AV has.

That said, Vanderdrunk is an extremely good kicker and I'm happy to have him.

Also, just cuz he's a cowboy now don't go and crap in my cereal bowl and tell me it's chocolate pudding. He is NOT good on kickoffs. PERIOD. Again, very happy to have him, but don't lie about his weakness just to make yourself feel better.

Is he horrible on kickoffs? Not quite, but he's below average. His FG kicking makes up for it though. I'll take a guy that can make FGs and is below average on kickoffs over a guy that booms kickoffs and sucks at FGs any day of the week.

Relax. Reports (from Fox Sports Southwest) indicate he's staying in Dallas overnight along with his agent to get this deal hammered out.

That is awesome news. I never imagined Cundiff coming back and stinking it up the way he did. We really need to address our issues at kicker ASAP, especially since over the last few years A LOT of games we played in came down to one kick being the difference. Get it done Jerry.

So are the media outlets already announcing this as "Cowboys acquire 'idiot-kicker'!"
