You know all the players say they "know that the NFL is strictly a business" so why don't they act like they know it.............think like a businessman...I'm coming off a very serious injury so I must show that I can perform first and then maybe I will get a raise. I like Ellis very much but going to the media and crying like a baby is not going to get you that raise. Also remember that business folks are not going to trade you or release you without proper compensation! Jerry Jones didn't build his empire being Mr. Nice Guy

And how did the posters here bash Ellis?

Calling him a cry baby, saying he sucks when he really doesnt, among other things.

Now answer my question.

I honestly don't think this is about a single thing other than money. He just wants more of it.

I don't know how much is pride and how much is money but you can be sure Ellis has been hurt by this. He knows he gave Jerry and player friendly deal last time. I'm almost certain Ellis is right about promises being made. This has to be a bitter pill to swallow. Betrayal always is. And right or wrong that is what Ellis is feeling.

Lost in all of this is Jerry's mishandling of the situation.

Even with all the 'ummms', Jerry is a smooth talker that could take care of the situation, but he just pulls the 'We don't negotiate existing contracts' even though we have recently.

Jerry could probably sit down with Ellis and gush all over him, about how much they need him as evidenced by the defensive collapse after Ellis went down, blah, blah and placate Ellis enough that he feels wanted and doesn't complain anymore.

Ellis is still important to the team, because despite his recent complaining in the offseason, he still gives it his all on the field.

Excellent. Can't add a thing. I empathize with both sides. And both could do better. Ellis needs to take it behind closed doors. And Jerry needs to open the door and then close it behind a loyal employee. Two spats over this time doesn't change how I feel about Ellis. He's a good guy and a very good football player.

I'm 100% in the same boat. With or without Spencer in the picture, Ellis is still complaining this year IMHO.

not answering your question, however..

he's big, slow, and stiff, and hes never had 10 sacks. the guy is average, and that's being generous.

He is crying to the media. Saying he sucks, well how is that bashing when there may be truth to it, since some posters feel he isn't contributing on a level that he should be. So is telling the truth by a posters perspective bashing? Or is it honest observation?

You answered your own question. You no doubt will read Ellis' comments as nothing more than him telling the truth, and not bashing. But of course you probably carry a double standard when it involves anyone other than Ellis.

No I didn't answer my own question. You said he was bashing Jerry Jones. I am asking you how he is bashing Jerry Jones? You havent answered my question.:bang2:

You are just copping out because you made a stupid statement and you are just trying to avoid answering the question, because you can't.

From Mac Engel's article yesterday.

Mac Engel said:
When Greg Ellis first spoke to the Star-Telegram on May 2 about his frustrations, he wasn't talking about a trade, a release or a new deal. He wanted to wait to talk to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones or new coach Wade Phillips.

And Ellis said Jones said he originally planned to meet with him.
But Jones said Thursday he has no plans to meet with anyone under contract.

"That pretty much tells you everything," Ellis said Thursday.
Ellis, 31, is under contract through 2009. What Jones did say about Ellis is, "We all want more money."

Nearly six weeks after the Cowboys drafted linebacker Anthony Spencer in the first round, Ellis said he would like to have his deal re-worked, or be released.

He also said that if he doesn't believe his injured leg is 100 percent, he will not participate in training camp. But he won't hold out.

"I don't go out there 'til I'm 100 percent because Jerry has let me know if you're not 100 percent, don't try to fight through nothing because I'm not going to look out for you," Ellis said.
I bolded the parts for emphasis. First it was Jerry or Wade. Then when Jerry said he has no intentions of meeting with anyone under contract Ellis decides that he will throw Jerry under the bus. What happened to meeting with Wade? His Head Coach? The guy he should meet with and respect? You don't bypass your Head Coach and go to the General Manager. If you want a new deal you have your agent contact the team. You don't open dirty laundry in the media. Then he intimates that jerry is not 100% behind him, so he's not going to "fight through nothing."

No, he wasn't the least bit insulting.

Give me a break. Jerry has paid him millions of dollars and drafted him way higher than anyone else would have. Yeah, Jerry's evil.

think his draft position has led him along a path of over-estimating his capabilities

I think his mindless inability to separate the on-the-field production from the off-the-field value is also confusing what obviously isn't a very intelligent person.

In the NFL, like it or not, you do not pay for character. You pay for results. And if Ellis was delivering the desired results, he would be getting paid precisely what he expects and then some. He is injured and has never produced to the level he wants to be paid. I do not understand how anyone could get confused.

This is like a commission salesman complaining because someone else gets a fifty-cent higher baserate when all he had to do was sell more to begin with. And then he expects his years of service to count for something.

LOL! I can play that game too. You didn't answer my question. How are the posters bashing Ellis? You are just copping out because you made a stupid statement and you are just trying to avoid answering the question, because you can't.

Way over your head. Amazing how your perspective on something is considered the 'absolute truth', and yet when someone like me does the same thing, you turn the table. What a shock.

Remember it's not considered bashing unless the name "Ellis" is involved. He is untouchable.

It is "bashing" when you have the nerve to question an illogical train of thought coming from what obviously is a player who cannot distinguish between what is worthy of being rewarded financially and what is not.

I cannot think of any player in the NFL who has ever received a new contract based solely on the fact they were a nice person, outstanding citizen and mentor. Much less one who really has never achieved much beyond being considered solid over the course of his career.

If Ellis believes he was deceived, fine. Hold out. I would respect that.

And please, don't insult my intellect by saying "he's not like that".

He wants money and you don't get that by holding out. If this were truly about principle, he'd be a man and call Jones' bluff. He would have done it two years ago when he might have had a leg to stand on. If he had truly held out, he would have probably received something. But no, he sat and he took it. Why did he? "Loyalty"? LOL. If that was why, he really deserves even less pity than some of you are heaping upon him. And why is the cheating angle being played up now, four years plus after the fact? Why play around with buzzwords like "commitment"? Oh yes, he's "classy". No, he's just a poor decision maker or a liar. Or both.

If he truly felt cheated and swindled, he would sit out if he had any courage or conviction. But you see, then he would lose even more money. And despite appearances, his level of altruism has its limits, or so he likes to threaten it does.

Jones is staring him down and is counting on the inevitable blink. Is that being deceitful? No, that is smart. And Ellis either needs to stop blinking or simply accept his fate.

He has no leverage. Not a leg to stand on, either via production, age or health. All he has is this mythical "character" angle, which honestly doesn't count for anything in the cold harsh NFL businessworld. And no amount of whining is going to change that.

Either he is misleading us all or doesn't have the heart to stand up for what he thinks is right. He's done the very same thing for three consecutive offseasons, just changing his story around each time.

That tells me that he doesn't have any conviction about this and realizes, deep down, from a pure business standpoint, Jones is right. He's just trying to tug at Jones' obvious heartstrings and thankfully, it is not working.
