Jerry didn't berate Rodgers. He went after Brian Stewart in the defensive coaches meeting.

The only way we are going to have a great pass rush which is consistent on three downs this season is if Jay Ratliff goes back to DE.

We need some pass rush ability at the DE spots. Spears provides nothing in that area and Canty is average at best.

Then on passing downs it's Ratliff, Hatcher and Ellis on the line with Ware and Spencer coming from the DE or stand up LB spots, just as long as they are on the edges. Every now and then I think we should see a sixth guy coming to from a CB spot or the Safety spot.

Am I the only one that thinks it should be "Silver and Blue Report"

"Blue and Silver Report" sounds awkward.

I'd like to see more pressure up the gut. James did a solid job last year, I'd just like to see that middle abused a little more.

I agree, in my mind we don't even have a 3-4 NT on the team, we've got a bunch of 3-4 DE's. How we're expecting Ratliff to start at NT all season AND be an effective pass rusher is beyond me and we're paying him too much to be a situational guy.

We also had plenty of chances to address NT in the draft, including that 6th round pick we spent on an OLB that may not make the roster and would have probably gone undrafted.

what sucks is that we're probably going to continue to see a downtrend on sacks, everyone's sacks were down last year, with teams spreading people out and the quick passes, Green Bay and New England for example

If sacks were down (I'd like to do some stat research on that first to see how true that is) it's more likely due to the lack of holding calls the refs had last year per Goodell's instructions. I remember last year, particularly early on, every team was getting away with some serious holding. Spreading people out and throwing quick passes is a nice thought, but it's still incredibly risky and coaches know that. If you can't complete passes, then you face a lot of 2nd and 10's. And if you have QB's and/or WR's who don't know what they are doing, then you risk getting your QB killed.

I would have given Justin Tuck Super Bowl MVP.

Tuck did a great job, but I'd give it to Spagnuolo if it were permissible to give to a coach. He did a masterful job of lulling the Patriots to sleep at times and then playing the pressure card at the right moments.

The only other defensive job that compares in Super Bowl history is when the Patriots held the Rams at bay.

We had every shot to draft a NT and passed. We even traded away a shot (several times) at Red Bryant.

We also unloaded Ferguson as well. Why is that?

People keep this prototypical 3-4 NT in their minds and keep thinking we don't have that on the roster. Wade Phillips has won with smaller NTs and bigger ones too.

We have a starting NT on this roster. And it is Ratliff. Along with Tank Johnson, we will be fine. More than fine, actually.

Ratliff isn't a pure DT and if we could get a DT that is forced to be double teamed or stops the run at the point of attack we would be a lot better. That would also push Ratliff back to his natural position and push Spears off the team which would be an even better improvement.

If they play Hatcher more you will see this kid is a great player every down.If they don't start him here he will be gone when his contract is up.

how many sacks did marcus spears have last season? :banghead:

sacks are one thing, pressures are another and he had very few of those as well.

I believe he had 2 sacks. Spears is underrated but I do think he needs to be platooned with Hatcher. Hatcher deserves a shot at replacing him and I think he will get it. Spears ability to play the run is not appreciated here by all.

Well we agree here wholeheartedly. The better CB play this year, assuming it does improve which it should, will contribute to the sack total and pressures, allow more risks and blitzes, and garner more turnovers via sack/fumbles and INTs. Both the DL and the CBs are gonna benefit from each other. And the middle should be fine esp with the addition of Thomas. Akin was pitiful. And the fact Carp couldn't beat him out worries me.

Not sure he has to start but he needs to get on the field more or he will look to leave. Hopefully Dallas will make some headway in the playoffs and force players to consider leaving a very successful team. And more on field success will also breed loyalty. Plus Hatcher will be 100% this year, at least from the standpoint of last year's injury. Hatcher is a playmaker IMO.

Guess which one of our defensive linemen had the most "big plays" last season, and by far the highest rate of "big plays" compared to playing time?

Hatcher was second fourth in "big plays" and second when based on playing time. Hostile's answer is correct. Spears was first on both counts -- 11 "big plays" and one every 40.4 snaps played.

Here are the numbers, using the defensive coaches' film stats for sacks, tackles for loss, forced fumbles and fumble recoveries (nobody had an interception) --

Spears 11 (one every 40.4 snaps played)
Canty 8.5 (one every 80.2)
Ratliff 8 (one every 88.9)
Hatcher 7 (one every 52.4)
Johnson 4 (one every 52.5)
Bowen 0
