Vela: on Dallas pass rush at his new blog

Hatcher was second fourth in "big plays" and second when based on playing time. Hostile's answer is correct. Spears was first on both counts -- 11 "big plays" and one every 40.4 snaps played.

Here are the numbers, using the defensive coaches' film stats for sacks, tackles for loss, forced fumbles and fumble recoveries (nobody had an interception) --

Spears 11 (one every 40.4 snaps played)
Canty 8.5 (one every 80.2)
Ratliff 8 (one every 88.9)
Hatcher 7 (one every 52.4)
Johnson 4 (one every 52.5)
Bowen 0
R.Ayodele 0
I keep saying that he is great against the run and no one wants to listen. Those are good stats. 3-4 DEs do not pile up sacks. Especially the DE who plays on the strong side with a TE handicap.

Spears also has fewer opportunities for sacks because he almost always gets replaced when we go to a nickel/dime defense. He's not the pass-rusher that Canty and Hatcher are, but he does a lot of good things when he's on the field on first and second downs.

You're going to shatter some illusions about Spears if you're not careful.

How about posting the stats for the LB's while you're at it?

And if you have them handy, is that better than in the old 34? Remember the flap about Spears claiming that if he couldn't play in Wade's scheme, he couldn't play...

Spears had 1.5 as a rookie and 3.0 in 2006. Then 11 last season in by far the fewest number of snaps he has played in a season (576 in 2005, 595 in 2006 and 444 in 2007).

Are there numbers like this for linemen on other 3-4 teams? I bad about asking other people for free work.

Outstanding.

This most certainly doesn't paint the whole picture, especially when consistency isn't factored in.

Also, we have a very big DT (6-5 330) on the team right now that Jerry signed in January. Maybe he's one reason why we didn't draft a NT in the later rounds. I'm not sure how much he's going to contribute this year, but I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do in preseason.

No need for names, cuz true Cowboy fans already know who this 330lb behemoth is....correct?

Just goes without sayin ya know.

Don't you mean myths ;)

Spears is not a bad DE. He is very solid against the run. But he yaked so much about what he was going to do and then frankly did not back up the talk.
I also would like a definition of "big play"

To me that is a sack on 3rd down; TFL on 3rd down; etc.
Stopping a runner on 3rd down from getting a first. That is a big play.
Basically to me a big play is forcing a turnover or a punt.
Doing it on first down is NOT a big play.

What the hell is a "big play?" I really need that definition.

I think Adam's post that first contributed the numbers also defined that:

sacks, tackles for loss, forced fumbles and fumble recoveries

Still think big plays need to be restricted to 3rd downs or turnovers.

If that is the case, is a sack counted twice (as a sack and a tfl)?
